Usually, no—not as a dependable, unattended replacement. An Android TV box may be worth testing if you already own it and can keep a compatible encoder running in the foreground, but Android TV’s documented app-lifecycle rules make it risky to assume that streaming will continue after you leave the app. A VPS is generally the more natural fit for an unattended process, provided you configure and maintain it properly.

Why an Android TV box is not a guaranteed 24/7 host
YouTube supports live delivery through an encoder, including software and standalone hardware. The encoder needs YouTube’s Live server URL and stream key. That establishes that encoder-based streaming is possible; it does not establish that an arbitrary Android TV box can keep an encoder running unattended.
The key concern is Android TV app lifecycle behavior. Android Developers’ Android TV guidance says an audio app may keep a foreground service running after the user leaves only to continue audio playback. For other apps, it says foreground services must stop when the user leaves. A video-streaming encoder app therefore cannot be assumed to keep running after you exit it or switch away.

Android’s broader background-execution rules also leave some restrictions to the device manufacturer. In a documented restricted AOSP case, a background app may be prevented from launching foreground services, and existing foreground services may be removed from the foreground. The exact outcome can vary by device and software; the cited guidance does not certify an arbitrary box or a workaround.
In short, an Android TV box is best treated as an experiment to validate on the exact model and software—not as a dependable substitute for a server without testing.

How to test a box before relying on it
Do not buy a particular Android TV box on the assumption that it is suitable for 24/7 streaming. First confirm that the exact device supports an encoder capable of sending your intended output to YouTube. Then validate that it remains stable in the required foreground state and recovers from the kinds of interruptions you expect.

- Set up a test stream. In YouTube Live Control Room, obtain the Live server URL and stream key. Enter them in a compatible encoder on the box. Keep the stream key private; anyone who obtains it may be able to broadcast to your channel.
- Check the required output. Confirm that the encoder can produce the video and audio format you need and that the box can sustain it. The cited official sources do not specify a recommended bitrate, resolution, or keyframe interval for this particular box-and-encoder combination; use settings appropriate to your encoder and YouTube’s current guidance rather than assuming a device can handle them.
- Run a supervised soak test. Let the stream run while you monitor the box, encoder, network, and YouTube Live Control Room. Check for overheating, app closure, dropped connections, or other instability. A short successful test does not prove continuous operation.
- Test leaving the app. Follow the actual behavior you would use day to day: switch apps, return to the home screen, or turn off the display as applicable. Confirm whether the encoder continues streaming. If it stops when it is no longer in the foreground, it does not meet an unattended requirement without a supported, model-specific solution.
- Test interruption and recovery. Under supervision, interrupt the network and restore it, then power-cycle the box. Check whether the encoder reconnects and resumes the stream, and whether it launches again after reboot. Do not assume recovery merely because the device can stream before an interruption.
- Check sustained upload and home-network stability. Verify that the available upload capacity and router connection can support the stream continuously. The cited sources do not provide a universal bandwidth figure for an unspecified output.
If the stream only works while the encoder stays onscreen, describe it honestly as a local setup that needs a dedicated foreground session and monitoring—not an unattended server replacement.

YouTube’s cited live-stream guidance says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. Do not extend that statement to a continuous 24/7 broadcast: the guidance does not promise automatic archiving for a stream that runs longer than 12 hours. If retaining a replay matters, plan around sessions shorter than 12 hours or confirm the expected behavior in your channel’s current Live Control Room.
