Not automatically. A hardware encoder can move video-encoding work from the CPU to a dedicated component in a GPU or processor, which may improve streaming performance. But that does not prove the whole PC uses less electricity or that the monthly bill falls. To find out, compare whole-system power with both encoders under the same workload, then include any hardware purchase cost.
What a hardware encoder changes—and what it does not prove
OBS describes hardware encoding as transferring work from the CPU to a specialized GPU component. It generally recommends hardware encoding for performance, while warning that earlier-generation encoders can produce lower image quality than software encoding at the same bitrate. OBS’s hardware encoding guide addresses workload and performance, not a guaranteed reduction in total system power or electricity cost.

That distinction matters: lower CPU use is not the same measurement as lower whole-system energy use. For a bill comparison, measure the entire PC and preserve the same stream settings and acceptable quality. The official documentation cited here does not provide a controlled whole-PC power comparison or a payback period.

Check for an encoder you already own
Before buying equipment, check whether your existing system offers a compatible hardware encoder in OBS. OBS documents NVIDIA NVENC, AMD AMF, and Intel Quick Sync, with support depending on hardware generation and operating system. Intel notes that Quick Sync may not appear in OBS when the hardware does not support it. Intel’s streaming guide discusses Quick Sync and dual-PC streaming; NVIDIA’s broadcasting guide describes generation-dependent codec choices and preset trade-offs.

- Compact but Powerful Design: ZowieBox is smaller than a phone, featuring a tally light and LCD screen for streaming status. Capture console gameplay in up to 4K with zero-lag HDMI passthrough, while the built-in video encoder converts video for IP streaming. The IP stream can also be decoded back to a 4K HDMI signal.
- Standalone Game Streaming: Just plug and play—ZowieBox enables PC-free live gaming without affecting gameplay. As an RTMP hardware encoder and HDMI streamer, it delivers stable streaming directly from your source, making it ideal for gaming, live events, and professional broadcasting.
- NDI|HX3 Converter Technology: ZowieBox converts HDMI signals to NDI|HX3/HX2/HX, functioning as an NDI video encoder, or NDI Video Decoder for flexible IP workflows. Certified NDI technology enables low-latency gameplay streaming through OBS/vMix. Note: Encoder and decoder modes cannot run simultaneously; full NDI signals are not supported.
- UVC to HDMI Conversion: Supporting up to 4K@30fps and 1080p@60fps decoding, ZowieBox enables flexible conversion for webcam and video workflows. As a video decoder and HDMI to IP converter, it expands connectivity options for professional video devices. Note: USB capture card functionality is not currently supported.
- All-around Configuration Options: Control ZowieBox through its web UI on a PC, phone, or tablet. Manage connected PTZ cameras, tally light, video/audio, OSD, work mode, streams, network, and system settings. Support for VISCA over IP encoder workflows enables flexible PTZ control, while the dashboard provides video preview and system status.
Encoder menus and capabilities vary by hardware and software version. If an option is missing, verify your processor or GPU model and current OBS compatibility guidance rather than assuming a software setting can enable unsupported hardware. If an encoder is already available, trying it costs less than buying a dedicated device, but still does not establish a lower bill.
Measure the cost on your own setup
Run a matched comparison: use the same PC, video or game, resolution, frame rate, bitrate, scenes, and stream duration, changing only the encoder. Record average whole-system watts for each run, and note image quality and dropped or missed frames. OBS warns that older hardware encoders can trade image quality for performance, so a watts-only comparison is incomplete.

- 【Hardware H.265/H.264 Encoding at 1080P60】Dedicated hardware encoder delivers broadcast-quality 1080P60 streams with H.265/H.264 compression. Reduces bandwidth usage by up to 50% compared to legacy H.264-only solutions, while maintaining crisp, crystal-clear video output.
- 【Broad Protocol Support for IP Distribution】 Supports SRT, RTMP(S), RTSP, UDP, HTTP, HLS, WebRTC, TRTC, Icecast and SHOUTcast — integrate seamlessly with CDNs, surveillance NVRs, IPTV systems and browser-based monitoring dashboards. One device replaces multiple single-purpose streaming boxes.
- 【Browser-Based Setup in Minutes】 Set up in minutes through any browser — no software, drivers or OS compatibility issues. DHCP is enabled by default to prevent IP address conflicts on your network. Note: basic networking knowledge (IP address, RTSP/RTMP configuration) is recommended for advanced streaming setups.
- 【Compact Design with Flexible Deployment】Palm-sized form factor (approx. 90×54×29mm) fits easily behind monitors, on shelves, or in equipment racks. Low power consumption ensures reliable 24/7 operation for live events, remote monitoring, and digital signage.
- 【Professional Audio & OSD Overlay + 1-Year Warranty】 Supports HDMI embedded audio plus external 3.5mm input. Built-in OSD generator adds scrolling text, logos, or timestamps directly to the video stream — ideal for branding, event info, or security labeling. Backed by a 1-year warranty and 24/7 online technical support.
- Measure both configurations. Record average total-system power while streaming with the current software encoder and with the available hardware encoder.
- Use your actual monthly hours. Include only the hours for which the PC is streaming; do not substitute a generic 24/7 assumption if your channel is not live continuously.
- Apply your electricity rate. Use the price per kilowatt-hour on your own bill, including the relevant local rate structure if it varies by time.
- Account for equipment and other recurring costs. Include the purchase price of a new encoder, GPU, PC, or supporting equipment, and any recurring service cost relevant to the workflow.
- Check the result against stream quality and stability. A lower measured cost is not a useful saving if the output no longer meets your quality needs or the stream becomes less reliable.
For each configuration, estimate monthly energy cost as: average system watts ÷ 1,000 × streaming hours per month × electricity price per kWh. The difference between the two energy-cost estimates is an estimate for your measured setup, not a universal encoder saving. If buying hardware, compare any monthly difference with its upfront price over the period you expect to use it. The cited documentation does not supply generic wattage differences, electricity rates, retail prices, or a break-even time.

Hardware encoding in the existing PC
This is the first option to check when the goal is reducing CPU workload or improving performance: use an encoder already supported by your machine and measure the whole system. OBS’s recommendation is about performance; the energy result for your PC must be measured.

A standalone hardware encoder
YouTube distinguishes software encoders running on computers from standalone hardware encoders. Its live encoder overview lists dedicated devices such as AJA HELO Plus and Osprey Video Talon. Their presence in YouTube’s options does not demonstrate a consumer PC-streaming payback case. Count the device and supporting equipment cost, and compare measured whole-system power before treating one as a cost-saving purchase.
A second PC
Intel identifies a dual-PC setup as an option for gaming and streaming simultaneously. Adding another computer and its associated equipment is not evidence of lower total household cost. Compare the power and purchase costs of both machines against the single-PC setup under the same stream workload.

Cloud streaming for continuous prerecorded video
For a different use case—keeping prerecorded video live continuously—YouTube describes cloud-based services such as Gyre as a way to stream without a dedicated PC. That establishes an available workflow, not that it costs less: compare the actual service price with electricity avoided by measuring the PC’s power and your local rate.
