A 2017 quantum-chemistry study found that ammonia (NH3) can catalyze the conversion of sulfur trioxide (SO3) and water into sulfuric acid far more rapidly than water alone under the modeled conditions. That does not mean ammonia universally makes rain more acidic: ammonia can later neutralize sulfuric acid to form ammonium salts, and the calculated pathway has not been shown to account for a measurable share of acid rain in the atmosphere.
The important distinction is between speeding acid formation and neutralizing the acid after it forms. Both can happen in the same air parcel, while clouds, aerosols, oxidants, water, altitude and other bases determine the final deposition.

What the “alkaline surprise” actually means
Ammonia is a base. In atmospheric chemistry it is commonly associated with neutralizing sulfuric acid and producing ammonium bisulfate or ammonium sulfate. Those salts are less volatile than the original gases and are a major part of fine particulate matter. It therefore sounds contradictory that ammonia could help create sulfuric acid, the acid responsible for much sulfur-related acid deposition.
The contradiction disappears when the reactions are separated into stages. The 2017 study by Biman Bandyopadhyay, Pradeep Kumar and Partha Biswas examined the hydrolysis step in which sulfur trioxide reacts with water:

SO3 + H2O → H2SO4
In their electronic-structure calculations, an ammonia molecule joined the reacting molecules in a transient complex. It rearranged proton transfers and lowered the effective barrier for making sulfuric acid. Ammonia therefore acted as a catalyst for that individual reaction pathway rather than as an acid itself.
Afterward, the newly formed sulfuric acid can still react with ammonia:
H2SO4 + NH3 → NH4HSO4
With additional ammonia, ammonium sulfate can form. This later neutralization chemistry is not erased by the earlier catalytic effect. A molecule can help the SO3-to-sulfuric-acid conversion and then be tied up in an ammonium salt, so “ammonia promotes formation” and “ammonia neutralizes acid” are not mutually exclusive statements.
What the 2017 calculation found
A very large calculated rate-coefficient difference
At 298 K (about 25 °C), the calculated rate coefficient for ammonia-catalyzed SO3 hydrolysis was approximately 105 to 107 times larger than the coefficient calculated for water-catalyzed hydrolysis. This is the study’s headline number. It compares the intrinsic rate coefficients for two modeled reaction channels; it is not a measurement that acid rain increased by five to seven orders of magnitude.
A rate coefficient is only one part of an atmospheric rate. The reaction frequency also depends on how many ammonia and water molecules are present. A useful conceptual comparison is:

ammonia pathway rate ∝ kNH3[NH3]water pathway rate ∝ kH2O[H2O]
Even a much larger kNH3 does not automatically make the ammonia route dominate everywhere. The researchers reported that ammonia could overtake water at some altitudes depending on the relative concentrations of the two species. Near the surface, humidity, ammonia emissions and mixing differ from conditions higher in the troposphere, so the modeled competition changes with location and altitude.

The result came from quantum-chemical calculations of molecular structures, energies and reaction barriers. Such calculations are valuable for discovering plausible mechanisms that may be missed by simplified atmospheric schemes. They do not by themselves establish how often the reaction occurs in clouds, aerosols or free air, nor how much sulfate reaches the ground as precipitation.
No independent field-measured percentage has been established for acid rain attributable specifically to the ammonia-catalyzed SO3 pathway. The 105-107 figure must therefore remain a calculated kinetic comparison, not a claimed real-world contribution.
How ammonia can lower the reaction barrier
SO3 is highly reactive, but direct reaction with a single water molecule requires an energetically demanding arrangement of bonds and proton transfers. In the modeled ammonia complex, NH3 can accept or donate a proton at the appropriate point while water attacks the sulfur center. That extra partner provides a more favorable route between reactants and products.

In transition-state terms, the ammonia-containing complex has a lower calculated activation barrier than the corresponding water-only channel. Lowering the barrier increases the rate coefficient exponentially at a given temperature, which explains why a modest-looking change in calculated energy can translate into a factor of 100,000 to 10,000,000 in the predicted coefficient.

“Catalyst” describes the role in this elementary step, not a guarantee that ammonia remains unchanged throughout atmospheric processing. The same ammonia that assists the hydrolysis complex can be consumed later by sulfuric acid, and other reactions can redistribute it between gas and particle phases.
How this pathway compares with other SO3 hydrolysis routes
| Pathway | What the study establishes | Atmospheric interpretation | Evidence status |
|---|---|---|---|
| Water-catalyzed SO3 hydrolysis | Used as the baseline for the 298 K rate-coefficient comparison. | Water is abundant, and sulfur trioxide can convert rapidly even without the newly proposed ammonia route. | Established chemistry; the study’s comparison does not imply that water is ineffective. |
| Ammonia-catalyzed SO3 hydrolysis | Calculated rate coefficient about 105-107 times higher than the water-catalyzed value at 298 K; relative abundance and altitude determine whether it can compete. | Could provide an additional gas-phase route where NH3 and SO3 coexist, but its contribution to ambient sulfate or rain was not measured. | Theoretical molecular result, not a field-derived source fraction. |
| Acid-catalyzed hydrolysis | The available data does not provide a numerical barrier or rate coefficient for a direct comparison. | Acidic particles and droplets can alter sulfur chemistry, but their importance depends on multiphase conditions. | Do not infer a ranking from the ammonia study alone. |
The comparison shows why “ammonia is faster” is too broad. The reported advantage applies to a specified modeled reaction and temperature. It does not rank every sulfur oxidation route in the atmosphere, and it does not replace chemistry occurring inside particles or cloud droplets.
Why real acid rain is a multiphase problem
Atmospheric sulfur does not follow one straight gas-phase line from an emission source to rainfall. Sulfur dioxide is oxidized to sulfate through interconnected gas, aerosol and aqueous reactions. The American Meteorological Society’s review of atmospheric chemistry states that aqueous processing is estimated to produce more than half of ambient sulfate. Clouds and wet aerosols provide liquid water, dissolved oxidants and surfaces where sulfur species can react quickly.
Gas phase
In dry air, sulfur dioxide is oxidized by atmospheric oxidants, producing sulfur trioxide and other intermediates. The ammonia-catalyzed hydrolysis proposal concerns the subsequent conversion of SO3 toward sulfuric acid. How much SO3 is available, how long it survives and whether it enters a particle all affect the pathway’s opportunity.

Aerosol and particle phase
Sulfuric acid has a strong tendency to partition into particles. Ammonia reacts with it to make ammonium bisulfate or ammonium sulfate, changing particle acidity, volatility and water uptake. Mineral dust can add calcium ions (Ca2+) and other bases that also neutralize sulfate acidity. These reactions alter what is transported and deposited, even when the initial acid-forming step was the same.
Cloud and rainwater
Once sulfur dioxide or sulfate enters cloud droplets, aqueous oxidation can dominate the conversion to sulfate. Rain then removes dissolved material by wet deposition. The pH of a drop depends on the full mixture of sulfuric and nitric acids, ammonia, mineral ions, carbon dioxide and other solutes—not on the ammonia-catalyzed SO3 reaction in isolation.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Does ammonia make acid rain more likely?
The scientifically defensible answer is conditional: it may accelerate one acid-forming reaction, but the available evidence does not show that it measurably increases acid rain overall.
Ammonia has two opposing effects that must be tracked together:
- Kinetic assistance: in the calculated molecular complex, NH3 lowers the barrier for SO3 hydrolysis and produces sulfuric acid more quickly than the modeled water-only route.
- Neutralization: NH3 reacts with H2SO4 to form ammonium bisulfate or ammonium sulfate, reducing the free-acid fraction and moving material into particles.
The net effect depends on concentrations, temperature, humidity, altitude, particle surface area, cloud liquid water, oxidant supply and competing bases. A faster first step can matter only if it changes the overall sequence enough to affect sulfate production or deposition before other pathways consume the reactants.

Why atmospheric chemists questioned its practical importance
In coverage of the study, computational atmospheric chemist Theo Kurtén of the University of Helsinki noted that SO3-to-sulfuric-acid conversion already happens very fast with water. His assessment was that the ammonia route was unlikely to play a significant role in the atmosphere even if ammonia dominates the calculated competition under some conditions. He nevertheless described the work as solid and interesting for chemical mechanism and theoretical chemistry.
That criticism is about atmospheric leverage, not whether the molecular calculation is internally meaningful. If the baseline water reaction is already fast compared with transport, dilution or competing loss processes, increasing its intrinsic coefficient may have little effect on the final amount of sulfate. To demonstrate a substantial impact, researchers would need atmospheric measurements or validated models that include concentrations, lifetimes, multiphase transfer and deposition—not just the isolated barrier calculation.
How to read the 105-107 number correctly
- It is a ratio of calculated rate coefficients. The comparison was made at 298 K for the modeled ammonia and water channels.
- It is not a ratio of atmospheric reaction rates. Actual rates also include NH3 and H2O concentrations and the probability that the required complexes form.
- It is not a percentage of acid rain. No field-measured fraction of precipitation acidity was assigned to this pathway.
- It is not a claim that ammonia always increases acidity. Neutralization and particle formation continue after sulfuric acid is produced.
- It is not a replacement for aqueous chemistry. Cloud and aerosol processing accounts for a large share of ambient sulfate according to the atmospheric-chemistry review.
What would be needed to establish real-world importance
A stronger atmospheric claim would require several independent pieces of evidence:
Recommended Free Tools
- Laboratory measurements of the ammonia-assisted SO3 hydrolysis rate over relevant temperatures, pressures and humidity.
- Measurements of SO3, NH3, sulfuric acid and particle composition at the same locations and altitudes.
- Atmospheric models that couple the reaction to gas-particle partitioning, cloud chemistry, oxidants and mineral dust.
- Sensitivity tests showing that adding the pathway changes sulfate concentrations, particle acidity or wet-deposition amounts beyond existing uncertainty.
- Field observations that distinguish this route from the many other reactions producing sulfate.
Without those tests, the strongest conclusion remains mechanistic: ammonia is capable of assisting acid formation under the calculated conditions, while its contribution to measured acid rain remains unresolved and may be small.
Bottom line for readers
Ammonia can be both a catalyst and a neutralizer, but in different stages of sulfur chemistry. The 2017 calculation found an ammonia-assisted SO3 hydrolysis rate coefficient roughly 100,000 to 10,000,000 times the water-catalyzed value at 298 K, with altitude and relative concentrations determining when the route could compete. That striking result is theoretical. Because water-mediated conversion is already very rapid and most atmospheric sulfate forms through a network of gas, aerosol and aqueous reactions, it cannot be converted into a measured increase in acid rain.
