AI can forecast some features of Bitcoin markets in historical studies, but the evidence does not establish a model that reliably predicts future prices or produces dependable trading returns. Results vary with what is being forecast—price, return, direction, or volatility—as well as the forecast horizon, data period, benchmark, and test method.
Can AI predict Bitcoin price?
Sometimes, in the limited sense that a model can produce a forecast that performs well against a chosen benchmark on a particular historical dataset. That is not the same as knowing whether Bitcoin will rise tomorrow, predicting every large move, or demonstrating a profitable strategy in live trading.

The first question is what “predict” means. A price-level forecast estimates a future quoted price. A return forecast estimates the percentage change over a period. A direction forecast classifies whether the price will rise or fall. A volatility forecast estimates the size of future movements, not whether they will be up or down. A model can do well at one task and poorly at another.
The studies available here are historical comparisons, and several use data ending in 2022. They do not establish how any model performs in the live 2026 market. Their results are best read as evidence about methods under specified conditions, not as a current Bitcoin price call.

- BITCOIN EXCLUSIVE, PHONE VERIFICATION: Bitkey is designed from the ground up exclusively for bitcoin — a dedicated hardware wallet for secure bitcoin storage. Approve transactions with a tap using your phone and NFC. No device screen is required.
- SELF-CUSTODY, NO EXCHANGE OR CUSTODIAN REQUIRED: You hold two of the three keys in the Bitkey system – one on your phone and one on your Bitkey device. The third is stored on Bitkey’s server and cannot move your bitcoin on its own.
- NO SEED PHRASE: Set up and use Bitkey without creating or storing a seed phrase.
- 2-of-3 MULTISIG: Three keys are stored separately across your phone, Bitkey device, and Bitkey’s server. Any two keys are required to move your bitcoin.
- BUILT-IN RECOVERY: Encrypted backup and recovery tools can help you regain access if you lose your phone or Bitkey device. You can also designate a Recovery Contact.
Bitcoin price prediction using machine learning: what the studies found
These studies do not forecast the same target or use the same dates and baselines. Their results therefore cannot be ranked by a single headline accuracy number.
| Study and target | Data and methods reported | Finding and qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Berger and Koubová, Journal of Forecasting (first published 31 May 2024); Bitcoin returns | Compared machine-learning techniques with econometric time-series models. Sample dates and a specific forecast horizon are not stated in the available study summary. | The authors report better forecast precision for machine learning than for econometric benchmarks in their in-sample and out-of-sample comparisons. They also report that deeper LSTM architectures do not improve daily forecast precision, and identify a simple recurrent neural network as a sensible daily-return option. This supports a conditional ML advantage, not a claim that more complex models always win. |
| Pratas, Ramos, and Rubio, Eurasian Economic Review (published 14 June 2023); volatility | 2,753 observations from 8 September 2014 through 1 May 2022; compared ARCH/GARCH with MLP, RNN, and LSTM methods using MAPE, MAE, and Diebold–Mariano tests. | The authors report deep-learning forecast-quality advantages in their comparisons. They also note significant computational costs: MLP and RNN forecasts are smoother and miss large spikes, while LSTM responds more strongly to those movements. These are volatility results, not evidence of correct price-direction calls. |
| Huang, Sangiorgi, and Urquhart, Journal of International Financial Markets, Institutions and Money, volume 97, article 102064 (2024); volatility | Compared LSTM and CNN-LSTM with GARCH and HAR approaches, over horizons from one day to two months. The article appeared online early on 19 October and was published in December 2024. | The University of Birmingham record reports neural networks outperforming GARCH across the tested horizons and LSTM outperforming HAR. A CNN-LSTM enhanced with Markov Transition Fields performed particularly well at short horizons, especially seven days. That is one study’s result, not proof that this architecture is universally best. |
| Cheng and coauthors, Technological Forecasting and Social Change (January 2024); price and Garman-Klass volatility | Daily data from 1 January 2017 through 30 October 2022; compared LSTM, SARIMA, and Prophet. | The abstract reports that the LSTM variant improved MSE and MAE against SARIMA and Prophet. It also reports that Prophet struggled during the Russian-Ukrainian conflict period and parts of the COVID-19 era, illustrating that results can deteriorate in turbulent periods. The finding is specific to that sample and comparison. |
| Kim and coauthors, Entropy (2023); direction classification | An indexed study result describes daily data from 2 December 2014 through 8 July 2019, comparing logistic regression, linear SVM, and random forest. | The indexed result reports 66% accuracy for logistic regression, higher than the other tested methods. Because the full article page was not accessible in the available evidence, treat this as a lower-confidence result from one historical classification study—not as general Bitcoin forecast accuracy. |
Bitcoin volatility forecast is not a direction forecast
Volatility models estimate how large price movements may be. They can be useful for questions about expected uncertainty or risk, but a forecast of high volatility does not tell you whether Bitcoin will rise or fall. The ARCH/GARCH, MLP, RNN, LSTM, and CNN-LSTM comparisons above address volatility forecasting; their results should not be presented as proof of accurate directional prediction.

Likewise, a return model and a direction classifier are not interchangeable. A return estimate can be numerically close while getting the sign wrong, and a direction classifier can correctly call up or down without estimating the size of the move. Any reported score needs to be read alongside its target and metric.

Before trusting a forecast claim, check whether the test matches the question you care about. A useful report should make its target, horizon, sample, comparison model, and evaluation method clear.

- Target: Is the model estimating price, return, direction, or volatility?
- Horizon: Is it forecasting the next day, a week, or a longer period? Performance at one horizon does not establish performance at another.
- Dates and data: What period was tested, and could the model have used only information available at each forecast date? A result from a sample ending in 2022 does not itself describe later market conditions.
- Baseline: What simpler or established model does it beat? The Berger and Koubová findings show why this matters: machine learning can beat econometric benchmarks in a comparison without deeper LSTM models improving daily precision.
- Metric: MAE, MSE, MAPE, directional accuracy, and statistical comparison tests answer different questions. A score from one metric cannot be directly compared with a score from another.
- Regime and large moves: Does the evaluation include turbulent periods and sharp spikes? The cited studies describe difficulties around turbulence or large volatility movements.
- Practical cost: Is the improvement meaningful after computational demands and the realities of execution? Pratas and coauthors specifically note substantial computational costs; the studies summarized here do not establish reader returns after fees, slippage, or execution constraints.
Out-of-sample testing is especially important: a model should be evaluated on data not used to fit or tune it. Even a sound historical test is not a guarantee that its relationships will persist. Bitcoin’s volatile behavior, news sensitivity, and structural changes make performance in one period an uncertain guide to another.

The evidence supports a measured conclusion: machine-learning models can be competitive for particular Bitcoin forecasting tasks, and some historical studies report gains over specified benchmarks. It also shows why “AI predicts Bitcoin” is too broad. Forecast targets differ, deeper architectures do not automatically improve results, volatility models can miss spikes, and performance can change in turbulent conditions.
