The exact controls depend on your model, so there is no single tap gesture that works for every pair.
Turn on ANC in the JBL Headphones app
- Identify your earbud model. Check the name in your phone’s Bluetooth settings, the JBL Headphones app, or on the charging case.
- Connect the earbuds to your phone and open the JBL Headphones app. If it lists more than one device, select the earbuds you want to control.
- Open the environmental-noise controls. Look for a section such as Ambient Sound Control; its label and available options can differ by model.
- Select Noise Cancelling or ANC. Check the app’s display or your model’s documented indicator to confirm the selected mode. JBL’s materials do not establish one confirmation sound or light that applies to all earbuds.
JBL describes the app as a way to control environmental noise on models such as Tune Buds Ghost and to adjust True Adaptive ANC levels. Available controls and features depend on the product. JBL Support: Which wireless earbuds have the best noise cancelling? and JBL Tune Buds Ghost.

Use a tap or press only if your model supports it
JBL earbud gestures vary by model and may be configurable. Check your model’s control page in the app or its manual rather than assuming that a double-tap, long press, or left-earbud gesture will switch on ANC.
For some applicable products, JBL support says advanced swipe controls are off by default and can be enabled under Settings > Gestures. That path is not universal across JBL generations. See JBL Support: How to customize gesture controls on your JBL earbuds.

- 6 mics for perfect calls: Three mics per ear effectively capture your voice while suppressing noise from other sources. Meanwhile, the beamforming algorithm minimizes unwanted ambient noise, making your authentic voice more intelligible. The windproof design significantly reduces distortion from air friction and gives you a crystal-clear call experience—even in the middle of an outdoor run on a breezy day.
Choose ANC, not an ambient listening mode
Ambient Aware and TalkThru are Smart Ambient modes designed to let you hear your surroundings or talk without removing your earbuds. Choose Noise Cancelling or ANC when you want to reduce outside sound. The distinction is described in JBL Support: What is Smart Ambient on JBL headphones?
What the ANC options mean
JBL describes three ANC categories for wireless earbuds: standard ANC, Adaptive ANC, and True Adaptive ANC. The model determines which type and adjustments are available. JBL says True Adaptive ANC responds automatically to environmental changes and can be adjusted across seven levels in the JBL Headphones app; that seven-level figure is JBL’s description, not an independently verified measurement. If ANC does not appear in the app
- Confirm that the app is connected to the correct earbuds and that you have identified their exact model.
- Check the model’s manual or JBL support page to confirm it supports ANC and to find its specific control location. An app or gesture option documented for one model may not exist on another.
- If you expected to use an earbud gesture, inspect the gesture assignments in the app. On some applicable products, advanced swipe controls must first be enabled under Settings > Gestures.
- If the controls still do not match what you expect, consult the exact model’s documentation rather than relying on a universal gesture sequence.
Model-specific example: JBL Tune Buds Ghost
JBL’s product information for Tune Buds Ghost lists ANC, Smart Ambient, app-based environmental-noise controls, and gesture customization. The product sheet also lists three included eartip sizes; those details apply to this model, not to JBL earbuds generally. JBL specifies up to 10 hours of playback with ANC on for Tune Buds Ghost. This is a manufacturer specification attributed to JBL / HARMAN International Industries, Incorporated, 2023—not a universal figure or independent test result.
