Usually, no—not by reading them alone. An AI-generated mathematical proof is best treated as an unverified conjecture or draft until a proof assistant such as Lean or Isabelle checks a precisely stated theorem in a reproducible environment. Even then, the checker establishes only that the formal proof follows from the formal statement, definitions, imported results, and permitted axioms. A person must still confirm that the formal statement says what the original problem intended.

This distinction explains why fluent explanations can be misleading, why benchmark percentages are conditional rather than universal reliability scores, and why trustworthy AI-assisted mathematics requires both machine checking and human review.

What it means to trust an AI-generated proof

“Trust” is not one property. A proof can be correct in one sense and wrong in another, so a responsible evaluation separates five questions.

Is the formal statement the intended theorem?

Statement fidelity comes first. The formal version must preserve the original quantifiers, domains, definitions, boundary cases, and side conditions. Translating “for every positive integer” as “for every integer,” dropping a nonzero denominator condition, or changing an existential claim into a universal one can produce a theorem that is easier to prove but not the theorem anyone asked about.

Did a sound checker accept the exact proof?

A kernel-based assistant such as Lean or Isabelle checks that each formal inference is licensed by its rules and imported declarations. This is substantially stronger than asking a language model to critique its own prose. Acceptance must apply to the exact source code being presented, not to a shortened example, a different file, or an earlier draft.

Are the dependencies and axioms understood?

Imported libraries can contain powerful theorems, and a development can include axioms, admitted placeholders, or automation settings that change what has actually been established. A review should record every imported module, identify noncomputable or classical assumptions where relevant, and distinguish a theorem derived inside the system from an assumption declared without proof.

Can another person reproduce the result?

Preserve the formal source, proof-assistant version, library revision, configuration, and commands needed to run the checker. Reproducibility is not a cosmetic preference: a proof that depends on an unpinned library or an undocumented automation setting may stop checking after an update.

Does the result answer a meaningful mathematical question?

Human mathematical review remains necessary. A checker can validate a perfectly consistent proof of a mis-specified, trivial, or irrelevant theorem. A mathematician must explain why the conclusion follows from the intended assumptions and what the result contributes.

Why fluent natural-language proofs are unreliable evidence

Logical gaps hidden by persuasive prose

Large language models generate likely continuations, not guarantees that every implication is valid. They may assert that a limit exists before proving convergence, use a converse that was never established, apply an inequality outside its domain, or silently switch from “there exists” to “for all.” Smooth exposition can conceal these gaps because each sentence sounds like familiar mathematical language.

Computational and symbolic mistakes

Models also make arithmetic, algebraic, and counting errors. A sign can change during expansion, an exponent can be copied incorrectly, or a numerical pattern can be mistaken for a proof. The ICLR 2024 analysis describes these as “unjustified logical and computational errors.” Checking a few examples or asking the same model to regenerate the argument does not establish validity.

Unstated assumptions

AI-written arguments often assume continuity, differentiability, independence, finiteness, or an ordering that the problem never supplied. In geometry and algebra, an argument may rely on a diagram being nondegenerate when degenerate cases are allowed. In probability, an informal phrase such as “choose at random” can hide the required probability space.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Confidently invented references

A model can attribute a lemma to a textbook, invent a theorem name, or cite a paper that does not contain the claimed result. A citation is evidence only when the referenced statement has been checked and its hypotheses match the use in the proof.

What formal proof assistants can and cannot establish

Formalization turns a mathematical statement into a language with explicit types, definitions, and inference rules. Lean, Isabelle, and comparable systems then check a proof term or derivation with a small trusted kernel. Invalid formal steps are rejected, often with a precise location for the failure.

That guarantee has a boundary. The checker does not inspect the original natural-language question, the author’s intent, or whether a definition captures an informal concept in the expected way. If an AI formalizes “there is a real number satisfying…” as a theorem about natural numbers, the assistant can correctly verify the natural-number theorem while saying nothing about the intended real-number claim.

Formalization can also import substantial existing mathematics. Using a library theorem is legitimate, but a reader should know which result supplied the key step and whether its assumptions were discharged. A proof that compiles with an admitted declaration or an unexamined axiom is not equivalent to a proof built solely from previously verified theorems.

What current evidence says about AI theorem proving

Research results show meaningful progress, but they should not be read as a single “AI proof accuracy” number. Datasets differ in difficulty, formalization quality, theorem distribution, search budget, and what counts as success.

28.5% on LeanWorkbook The STP work by Dong and Ma (2025) reports this proportion of statements proved after training with 51.3 billion Lean-generated tokens. A benchmark outcome under that training setup, not the probability that an arbitrary AI proof is correct.
65.0% on miniF2F-test Reported by the same STP evaluation. Applies to the miniF2F test split and its formalization; it does not generalize automatically to research mathematics.
23.9% on ProofNet-test Reported by the same STP evaluation. Shows how performance changes with the benchmark and theorem distribution.
8 of 644 on PutnamBench at pass@3200 Eight solved statements when up to 3,200 sampled attempts were allowed per problem. Pass@3200 is a search-budget measure. It is not an eight-in-644 guarantee for one unaided response.
30,809 formal statements FormalStep, introduced by Liu and colleagues at ACL 2025, is a Lean-based benchmark for checking individual proof steps. Step correctness is a narrower task than producing a complete proof or validating an informal theorem statement.
60%–87% Lean execution rate Leang and colleagues (ACL 2025) report this range after iterative autoformalization. More generated formalizations executed in Lean, while the authors still characterize autoformalization as error-prone.

The ACL 2024 theorem-proving benchmark summarizes the central difficulty: formal proofs must be rigorously checked by assistants, and language models often struggle with novel or complex theorems. These results are useful for comparing systems under controlled conditions, not for replacing verification of a proof you plan to rely on.

How to verify an AI-generated proof, step by step

  1. Freeze the original claim. Copy the exact problem statement, definitions, quantifiers, and allowed assumptions into a review record. Mark ambiguous words such as “number,” “random,” “generic,” or “continuous.”
  2. Ask for a formal statement before a proof. Have the AI write the Lean, Isabelle, or other assistant statement separately. Compare every variable type, premise, conclusion, and side condition with the original. Do not accept a proof of a statement you have not inspected.
  3. Check the formal file in a pinned environment. Use the specified proof-assistant release, library revision, configuration, and imports. Confirm that the checker runs on the exact file under review and that no generated fragment is omitted.
  4. Inspect assumptions and shortcuts. Search the development for axioms, admitted or sorry-like placeholders, opaque external calls, and automation that may conceal a dependency. Record the theorem and library declaration used for each major step.
  5. Re-run independently. A second person or clean environment should reproduce the result from the preserved source. Differences in library versions can expose accidental dependencies or declarations that were available only in the original workspace.
  6. Review the mathematics at the statement level. Test edge cases, degenerate inputs, empty domains, and boundary values. Check that the formal definitions express the concepts a human reader would recognize.
  7. Read the explanatory proof separately. The prose should identify the main invariant, construction, or argument, not merely claim that the checker passed. Look for a human-understandable reason the result is true and for limitations not represented in the formalization.
  8. Publish an audit trail. Provide the statement, source, environment details, dependency information, and reproduction instructions. If the natural-language theorem and formal theorem differ, disclose the difference instead of presenting them as identical.

Does Lean prove that the AI is right?

Lean proves that a term accepted by its kernel inhabits the formal proposition supplied to it, assuming the trusted kernel and declared foundations. It does not prove that the AI understood your question, chose appropriate definitions, or avoided an unintended theorem. “The code compiles” therefore answers the formal-consistency question, not the statement-fidelity question.

This two-layer view prevents a common category error:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Layer 1 — formal validity: every inference is accepted under the assistant’s rules and dependencies.
  • Layer 2 — mathematical intent: the formal proposition, assumptions, and conclusion faithfully represent the problem and support the claimed interpretation.

A trustworthy result requires both layers. Failure at either layer is enough to reject the claim as presented.

How to judge AI-proof benchmark claims

When a paper, model card, or demonstration reports a success rate, ask the following before drawing conclusions.

Question Why it matters
Which checker and kernel were used? Different assistants, versions, and trust bases provide different guarantees and capabilities.
Which dataset and split? Training, validation, and test contamination can radically change the meaning of a percentage.
What is the sampling budget? Pass@1, pass@100, and pass@3200 measure different amounts of search and cannot be compared as if they were the same attempt.
Was the theorem already formalized? Generating a proof for an existing formal statement is easier than translating an informal problem faithfully and then proving it.
What counts as success? Execution of a partial script, correctness of one step, and completion of a full theorem are distinct outcomes.
Can the result be reproduced? Without source, versions, imports, and commands, a reported score is difficult to audit.
How much human review was used? Human intervention may repair statements, choose lemmas, or filter failed attempts, changing the practical meaning of “automated.”

Common failure modes and how to respond

The formal proof fails to execute

First check version and library mismatches, missing imports, namespace changes, and generated syntax. Then reduce the file to the smallest failing theorem. If the proof depends on an opaque automation tactic, replace it temporarily with explicit intermediate lemmas so the failed inference is visible. An execution failure means the submitted artifact is not yet verified; it does not by itself show that the underlying idea is false.

The checker accepts a suspiciously easy theorem

Inspect the statement for vacuous hypotheses, an empty type, an overly broad definition, or a conclusion that is weaker than the original claim. Check whether an axiom or admitted declaration supplies the difficult result. Reconstruct a few concrete instances and boundary cases outside the formal development.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The informal argument and formal statement diverge

Put the two statements side by side and annotate every quantifier, type, coercion, and side condition. If they differ, correct the formalization before discussing proof quality. A successful proof of the wrong theorem is a specification error, not a mathematical success.

Autoformalization keeps changing the theorem

Use a locked statement as an input contract. Let the model propose definitions and proof steps, but require a human to approve any change to the proposition. Iterative refinement can raise the proportion of scripts that execute—as the 60%–87% Lean execution results indicate—without removing the need to review what was formalized.

What standard should a publication or high-stakes result use?

For a classroom exercise or exploratory conjecture, an AI draft can save time if it is clearly labeled and checked before grading. For software verification, a machine-checked theorem with pinned dependencies may be the primary artifact, supplemented by tests and an explanation of the modeled requirements. For a research paper, safety-critical claim, or result intended for reuse, require statement-level review, kernel acceptance, dependency and axiom disclosure, independent reproduction, and a readable mathematical exposition.

Formal proof should complement, not replace, explanation. Anthropic’s report quotes Kevin Buzzard’s view that formalization can make it feasible to check the volume of AI-generated mathematics, while also noting that a formalized proof should not replace human-understandable exposition. The practical goal is a division of labor: models suggest definitions, lemmas, and searches; proof assistants reject invalid formal steps; mathematicians decide whether the verified theorem is the one that matters.

A compact trust checklist

  • The original theorem and the formal statement match in meaning, types, quantifiers, and side conditions.
  • The exact proof is accepted by a specified assistant and kernel in a pinned environment.
  • Imports, axioms, admitted placeholders, and automation dependencies are documented.
  • An independent rerun succeeds from preserved source and instructions.
  • A human has checked edge cases, interpretation, and mathematical significance.
  • Any benchmark or success rate is reported with its dataset, split, sampling budget, and intervention level.
