1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesYes—but only for a defined purpose, with clear labels, documented provenance, validation against real observations, and accountable human oversight. AI-generated (synthetic) data can make citizen-science software safer to test, help researchers share information when participant privacy is at risk, and support simulation, annotation, triage, or model development. It cannot automatically replace observations made in the physical world. If a conclusion depends on properties that the generator did not preserve, a convincing-looking synthetic dataset can produce a false result.
The practical rule is to keep three things separate: observations contributed by people, data generated by an algorithm, and conclusions drawn after comparing or combining them. Treat synthetic records as a different evidence class, not as extra volunteers.

What “AI-generated data” means in a citizen-science project
Synthetic data are artificial records produced by a model, simulation, or transformation rather than directly observed in the world. The UK Office for National Statistics (ONS) defines them as data that do not refer to real individuals. A generator might create simulated species sightings, images of astronomical objects, audio clips for a classifier, weather readings for a software test, or statistically modeled records derived from an existing dataset.
“AI-generated” covers several different operations. A generative model may create wholly new records; an imputation model may fill missing fields; an augmentation system may alter an image or sound; and a language or vision model may produce labels, summaries, or classifications. Those outputs have different risks. A synthetic image used to test whether an app accepts a file is not equivalent to an AI-produced species identification used in a biodiversity analysis.

Citizen science adds a governance issue that does not arise in a purely internal simulation. Participants provide observations, local knowledge, labor, and often the right to question an interpretation. Replacing their role with opaque automation can reduce trust, hide errors, and make the project less genuinely participatory.
When synthetic data are a sensible choice
Software and workflow testing
Testing is usually the safest application. A project can generate records with known edge cases—missing coordinates, duplicated uploads, unusual file sizes, extreme sensor values, or contradictory labels—without exposing a contributor’s personal information. Synthetic test data can be used to load-test an API, check database migrations, exercise moderation queues, and verify that a mobile app handles poor connectivity. Test records must never be mistaken for observations in the production dataset.
Privacy-preserving access and sharing
When exact locations, timestamps, photographs, or demographic fields could identify a person or a sensitive site, a synthetic release may let students, collaborators, or software developers work with a safer approximation. ONS cautions that synthetic data can substitute for testing or research when real data are inaccessible, but should be expected not to reproduce every property of the real data. A release intended for exploration therefore needs a clear statement of which analyses it supports and which it does not.
Simulation and method development
Simulated observations are useful for checking whether a proposed sampling design, statistical method, or user interface can recover a pattern whose true value is known. For example, a team can simulate seasonal sightings with a known detection rate, run its planned model, and see whether the method recovers that rate. This demonstrates behavior under the assumptions built into the simulation; it does not demonstrate that those assumptions describe the ecosystem being studied.

Pretraining, annotation and triage
Synthetic examples can help a classifier learn file formats or obvious visual features before it encounters real observations. An AI system can also propose labels or prioritize records for human review. These uses require a hold-out evaluation on real, independently collected observations. If the model is trained and tested only on generated material, the test measures consistency with the generator rather than accuracy in the field.
Final scientific evidence
Using synthetic-only data as the evidentiary basis for a claim about the physical world is the highest-risk case. It may be defensible for a purely computational question—for example, comparing algorithms under a stated simulation—but not as a silent substitute for measurements of pollution, disease, wildlife abundance, or public behavior. When high-quality data are required, ONS says use of the real data may be unavoidable.
Real observations, synthetic-only data and hybrid workflows
| Dimension | Real observations | Synthetic-only dataset | Hybrid human-plus-AI workflow |
|---|---|---|---|
| Scientific validity for a target task | Direct evidence for the measured setting, subject to sampling and measurement error | Valid mainly for questions about the generator or a defined simulation; physical-world validity is unproven | Can combine field evidence with controlled augmentation when each record’s origin is tracked |
| Privacy and disclosure risk | May contain identifiable people, locations, or sensitive sites | Often lowers direct exposure, but can still leak information or enable re-identification | Requires controls for both the original observations and generated derivatives |
| Representativeness and subgroup error | Reflects who and what was sampled; under-coverage remains possible | Inherits omissions and bias from source data and modeling choices, and can add new artifacts | Allows subgroup checks against real observations while using generation to fill limited gaps |
| Transparency and reproducibility | Depends on field protocols, instruments, and metadata | Requires generator version, parameters, prompts where applicable, and transformation records | Requires provenance for every real, transformed, and synthetic record |
| Participant agency | Contributors can inspect their own observations and the collection protocol | Agency can disappear if generated records replace contributors | Participants can review, challenge, and correct automated outputs |
| Cost and environmental footprint | Field collection can require travel, equipment, storage, and coordination | Generation uses computing and may be cheaper after setup, but large-scale runs consume energy | Uses computing selectively while retaining the cost of collecting and validating real observations |
The hybrid column is not automatically the best option. It is preferable only when the generated component has a limited, explicit role and the project can test whether it changes the result.

A decision process before generating anything
- Write the intended role in one sentence. Choose among simulation, software testing, privacy-preserving release, model pretraining, annotation, triage, or final evidence. If the team cannot name the role, generation should pause.
- Identify the real-world property that matters. This might be geographic clustering, seasonal timing, rare-event frequency, image texture, demographic representation, or sensor noise. A generic similarity score cannot establish that the relevant property was preserved.
- Specify what synthetic records may influence. Decide whether they can affect interface behavior, model weights, a screening queue, a descriptive chart, or a published estimate. The closer the output is to a final claim, the stronger the validation and disclosure requirements.
- Set a separation rule. Store an immutable indicator for each record or field showing whether it is observed, transformed, imputed, or synthetic. Keep generated records out of the canonical observation table unless they are technically partitioned and visibly marked.
- Choose a validation plan before generation. Name the held-out real observations, task metrics, subgroups, calibration checks, and failure cases that will determine success. Do not choose a metric after seeing favorable results.
- Assess disclosure risk. Examine whether a generator memorizes rare records, reproduces exact images or coordinates, or allows an attacker to infer participation. “Synthetic” is not a synonym for anonymous.
- Obtain community agreement. Explain the purpose, benefits, limits, retention period, and access rules to contributors and affected communities. Where the project concerns Indigenous knowledge, endangered species, or vulnerable people, involve relevant governance bodies rather than relying on a generic consent notice.
How to validate synthetic data against real observations
Validation must be task-specific. A dataset can look statistically similar and still fail on the feature that determines a scientific conclusion.

Compare distributions that matter to the question
Compare location, time, class frequency, measurement ranges, missingness, and relationships between variables that the planned analysis uses. Check tails and rare categories, not just averages. For images or audio, evaluate the features used by the downstream classifier and inspect examples from difficult conditions such as darkness, occlusion, background noise, or unusual accents.
Test subgroups and geographic coverage
Report performance separately for relevant regions, habitats, seasons, languages, age groups, device types, or other subgroups. A generator trained on abundant observations can make a minority class look more common without reproducing its true variation. Compare false-positive and false-negative rates, not only overall accuracy.
Use held-out real data and calibration
Keep a portion of real observations out of generation and model development. Evaluate predictions on that untouched set. For probabilistic outputs, check calibration: a group of records assigned 70% confidence should be correct at about that rate in the evaluated population. Record error rates and the conditions under which the system fails.
Run sensitivity analyses
Repeat the planned analysis with real observations alone, with the hybrid dataset, and—where appropriate—with alternative generators or parameter settings. If the conclusion changes, report the difference instead of selecting the most favorable version. A synthetic dataset that improves precision while reversing the direction of an effect is not a harmless convenience.

Use human review as an evaluation instrument
Ask experienced contributors or domain specialists to inspect random and adversarial samples. They may detect impossible anatomy, implausible behavior, duplicated backgrounds, fabricated metadata, or culturally inappropriate labels that automated metrics miss. Record disagreements and corrections as part of the validation evidence.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.How to label and document AI-generated records
Every generated record should carry machine-readable provenance and a human-readable explanation. At minimum, record:
- the source observations or simulation assumptions;
- the generator name and version, model checkpoint, and software environment;
- prompts, random seeds, parameters, and post-processing steps where relevant;
- the creation date and operator or service account;
- which fields or records are synthetic, transformed, imputed, or human-verified;
- the intended use, prohibited uses, validation dataset, and known failure modes;
- the privacy or disclosure-risk assessment and access restrictions;
- the person or group accountable for approving changes and correcting errors.
A concise record-level label can follow this pattern: origin=synthetic; source=observations_2025_holdout_excluded; generator=project-model-2.1; created=2026-10-20; purpose=software-test; validated_against=real-set-A; human_review=no. For a public dataset, put the same information in a data card or README and repeat the warning at download and analysis points. Do not describe generated records as “observed,” “reported by volunteers,” or “field verified.”

A model can memorize unusual examples, reproduce a distinctive photograph, or generate a coordinate close enough to reveal a nest, residence, or participant. Membership-inference and reconstruction attacks are possible even when no row is copied verbatim. Before release, test for near-duplicates, rare combinations of attributes, and sensitive-location leakage. Limit resolution, suppress fields, restrict access, or provide aggregate outputs when the risk cannot be reduced sufficiently.
Best Value
Privacy decisions should also cover prompts, logs, intermediate files, model checkpoints, and vendor or cloud retention. Deleting the final table does not remove a copy embedded in an artifact or exposed through an API. Document who can access each stage and how corrections or withdrawal requests are handled.
Bias, fabricated patterns and loss of participant agency
Synthetic generation does not remove bias; it can amplify it. If the source data underrepresent a habitat or community, a generator may reproduce that absence while making the output appear complete. A model can also introduce correlations that are plausible in its training distribution but false for the study area. The 2023 United Nations University policy brief identifies bias propagation, cybersecurity, and increased model error among the risks of synthetic data.
The 2026 Nature Portfolio vision paper on citizen science highlights additional dangers from opaque AI, hallucinated outputs, incomplete or biased training data, misinformation entering open datasets, participant demotivation, and loss of agency. Its recommended safeguards—traceability, validation protocols, human-in-the-loop design, co-design with communities, and participatory data governance—are practical requirements, not public-relations language.

Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteKeep a meaningful human role at each consequential stage. Contributors should be able to see how their observations are transformed, challenge an AI label, flag an impossible output, and understand whether a generated record affected a published result. Credit and compensation policies should not imply that a synthetic record represents a person’s contribution.
Reporting a study that uses synthetic data
Methods should state exactly where generation occurred and where it did not. Describe the source population, exclusions, generator and settings, labeling scheme, validation results by subgroup, disclosure-risk controls, human review, and the analysis of real observations. Explain what the study can establish and what remains unknown. If a conclusion has not been reproduced on real data, say so plainly.
The UK Statistics Authority’s guidance of 29 January 2025 emphasizes safety, transparency, explainability, and societal wellbeing for synthetic data in research, analysis, and statistics. Those principles imply that a project should publish enough information for an independent reader to understand the data’s origin and limitations, while withholding sensitive parameters or records when disclosure risk requires it.
Common failure modes and fixes
- Generated rows enter the observation table unnoticed. Add enforced origin fields, separate storage, and a pre-publication query that counts synthetic records in every analysis.
- The model is evaluated only on generated examples. Reserve real observations and report performance on them, including subgroup and failure-case results.
- A similarity score is treated as proof of validity. Replace it with tests tied to the scientific task, calibration, error rates, and sensitivity analyses.
- Rare or sensitive records are reproduced. Run near-duplicate and disclosure tests; reduce detail, restrict access, or do not release the synthetic set.
- Participants discover that AI replaced their interpretation. Co-design the workflow, provide review and appeal paths, and preserve contributor control over consequential decisions.
- A synthetic chart is read as a field finding. Put the origin label in the chart, caption, download, and publication, and state whether the result changes with real observations alone.
A concise approval checklist
- Is the purpose something synthetic data can legitimately support?
- Are real and generated records technically and visually separated?
- Is provenance complete enough to reproduce the generation and transformation steps?
- Has the relevant task been tested on held-out real observations?
- Have subgroup errors, calibration, rare cases, and failure modes been examined?
- Has disclosure risk been assessed for outputs, logs, and model artifacts?
- Can participants inspect, challenge, and correct AI outputs?
- Does the report state what synthetic data cannot establish?
When the answer to any of these questions is no, restrict the data to low-stakes testing or simulation until the gap is addressed. Synthetic data are a tool for controlled support—not a shortcut around observation, consent, validation, or accountability.
