Compatibility at a glance
“Open a file” and “keep an editable Adobe project” are different promises. An application may import a file by converting it into its own document model, yet fail to preserve every layer, effect, artboard, timeline item, font, or adjustment. Exporting an image or video is also not the same as exporting a native project that another editor can continue.

The practical conclusion is narrow: choose Canva when a cloud design workflow can absorb a converted PSD or AI file; choose Affinity when PSD editing and PSD export are central; do not assume either one can continue a Premiere timeline natively.

Import is a conversion step
Canva’s Help Center says, “PSD file and .ai file types are supported.” That statement establishes that Canva accepts those file types as imports. It does not promise that every Adobe-specific object remains identical. The imported document is interpreted by Canva’s editor, which may map Adobe structures to Canva elements or flatten portions it cannot represent.

Affinity Designer’s format matrix is more explicit about direction: it lists Adobe PSD as both an import and export format. That supports a PSD round trip in principle, but a round trip still needs a visual and structural check. A file can open and save while changing blending, effects, text behavior, masks, or other details that matter to your production file.
Export can mean a finished asset
PNG, JPEG, PDF, H.264 video, and WAV audio are deliverables. They are useful when the next person only needs to publish, review, or edit the rendered result. They are not substitutes for an editable Photoshop, Illustrator, or Premiere project. Ask which of these outcomes you need before selecting an alternative:
- Pixel- or frame-level delivery: a rendered image, video, or audio file may be sufficient.
- Layer-level revision: you need a format and application that preserve separate editable elements.
- Native Adobe continuation: you need the original project format or a documented interchange path accepted by the destination application.
Canva PSD import: what is supported and how to test it
Documented limits
Canva documents PSD and AI support for import. The same documentation sets a 300 MB maximum for PSD files, a 100 MB maximum for AI files, and a 300-artboard maximum for Illustrator imports. These are intake limits, not guarantees that a file within the limit will preserve every feature.

A reliable PSD or AI import test
- Make a disposable test copy. Keep the original Adobe file untouched. Include representative content: multiple layers, text, transparency, masks, placed images, and any effects your team relies on.
- Check the limits before uploading. Confirm the PSD is no larger than 300 MB, the AI file no larger than 100 MB, and the Illustrator document does not exceed 300 artboards. A file outside those limits is not a meaningful compatibility test because it may be rejected before conversion.
- Import through Canva’s file upload flow. Open the resulting design in the editor rather than judging success from the upload notification alone.
- Inspect the layer and object structure. Verify that text is still editable where required, transparent areas remain transparent, images are present, and the visual stacking order matches the source. Look for missing elements, substituted fonts, flattened groups, or altered effects.
- Compare at production size. Check the design at 100 percent and at the size used for delivery. Small conversion differences can become visible in print, large displays, or animation.
- Export a proof and compare it with the original render. Keep the source render and the Canva render side by side. Record any discrepancy before deciding that the workflow is safe.
- Try a controlled revision. Change one layer or object, export the result, and reopen it in the destination workflow. This tests editability rather than merely visual similarity.
When Canva is a sensible fit
Canva is a reasonable choice when collaborators need browser-based access and the imported document can tolerate conversion. It can also be practical when the final handoff is a finished graphic rather than a native Adobe project. Establish a template-specific acceptance test, because a simple logo file and a complex layered composition do not exercise the same parts of the importer.
When to keep the Adobe source
Retain the original PSD or AI file as the source of truth whenever the design contains irreplaceable Adobe-specific behavior, requires repeated round trips, or will be handed to an Adobe user who expects native structure. Canva import support alone does not establish a lossless return path to PSD or AI.
Affinity Designer and PSD round trips
What the format matrix establishes
Affinity’s official documentation states that Designer imports Adobe PSD and exports the PSD file format. That makes Affinity the clearest documented option here for opening a PSD, editing it, and producing another PSD. The same matrix lists Adobe Illustrator AI as an import format but does not list AI export. You should therefore plan an AI file as an inbound asset, not as a format Affinity can save back to natively on the evidence available.

PSD workflow
- Duplicate the source PSD. Work on a copy so that the untouched Adobe file remains available if a conversion changes the document.
- Open the copy in Affinity Designer. Note any import warnings and inspect the document before making edits.
- Check critical structures. Review layer names and order, text objects, transparency, masks, placed images, and the visual result at normal viewing size. Mark anything that appears merged, substituted, or missing.
- Make a small, reversible edit. A controlled change proves whether the imported structures are actually editable in the way your team needs.
- Export as PSD. Use the PSD export option, then reopen that exported file in the application that will receive it. A successful save is not enough; the receiving application’s interpretation is the final test.
- Compare against the source and retain both versions. Keep a change log for any differences so later editors know which elements require reconstruction.
AI files in Affinity
Because the cited matrix lists AI for import but not export, an Affinity-edited Illustrator file should not be promised as an AI round trip. If the next person needs an editable Illustrator document, keep the original AI file and agree on a different handoff, such as a rendered proof or another interchange format that the receiving team has tested. Do not rename a PSD or PDF to .ai; a file extension change does not create Illustrator-native structure.

Can either alternative open a Premiere project?
Native .prproj support is unconfirmed
The searched primary sources do not confirm that Canva or Affinity Designer opens or exports native Adobe Premiere project files. A Premiere project contains an editable timeline and references to media, rather than being a self-contained rendered movie. Without documented project import, assume that a .prproj file will not transfer as an editable timeline into these applications.
Rendered output is not project interchange
Adobe’s Premiere documentation describes Generative Extend outputs saved as H.264 MP4 or WAV. Those are rendered video or audio files. They can be placed in another editor, but they do not carry the original Premiere sequence, cuts, track organization, effects settings, or linked media structure.

A safer video migration plan
- Preserve the complete Premiere project. Keep the
.prproj, source media, fonts, graphics, and any required plug-in or version notes in an archived package. - Define the handoff goal. Decide whether the recipient needs a final movie, separate audio, individual shots, captions, or a genuinely editable timeline.
- Render the deliverables you actually need. Supply a high-quality master plus review copies. If audio must be edited separately, provide the WAV output as its own asset.
- Include an edit decision record when reconstruction is possible. A shot list with timecodes, clip names, transitions, and key settings gives another editor information that a single MP4 cannot.
- Rebuild a short section first. Before migrating an entire production, recreate a representative sequence in the destination editor and compare timing, audio sync, titles, and color.
- Approve the rebuilt section before committing. If the destination cannot reproduce a required effect or timing, retain Premiere for that project rather than discovering the limitation after the full handoff.
An alternative editor may still be useful for new video work, but that is a different decision from opening an existing Premiere project. Treat those as separate compatibility questions.

A 2026 Creative Bloq evaluation of an open-source, AI-generated Adobe-style suite described it as being at an early stage and not yet ready to replace established software. The finding does not mean every experimental project is unusable; it means production teams should demand a file-based proof instead of relying on a feature list or a generated demonstration.
Minimum acceptance test for an experimental tool
- Open a real layered PSD and verify layer-level edits.
- Open a real AI file and check artboards, text, paths, and transparency.
- Export to the format your next editor actually requires, then reopen that export there.
- Render a short video or audio handoff and compare timing and quality with the source.
- Repeat the test after an update, because experimental format support can change.
- Keep the original Adobe files and a rendered fallback until the workflow has survived a complete production cycle.

Checklist before you switch a live project
- Identify the source format and the exact format the next editor requires.
- Separate “looks identical” from “remains editable.” Approve both independently.
- Measure files against documented intake limits before troubleshooting an upload.
- Test a representative document, not a simplified demo.
- Reopen every exported file in the receiving application.
- Keep the original PSD, AI, or
.prprojuntil final delivery is accepted. - For video, archive source media and provide a timeline description in addition to rendered files.
- Record which application version created each converted file and repeat the test after major updates.
Common failure modes and practical fixes
The file uploads but looks different
Conversion has succeeded technically but not visually. Compare layer order, transparency, fonts, masks, and effects against the source. If a critical element is altered, use the original application for that portion or deliver a rendered asset instead of claiming a faithful editable conversion.
The file is rejected before import
Check the documented Canva limits first: PSD files over 300 MB, AI files over 100 MB, or Illustrator documents over 300 artboards exceed the stated intake boundaries. Reduce a copy only if the resulting document still meets your production requirements; do not overwrite the source.
The export opens but cannot be edited as expected
Opening proves readability, not structural fidelity. Perform the controlled-edit test and reopen the export in the receiving application. If layers or objects are merged, treat the file as a rendered or partially editable handoff and preserve the native source.
A team expects a Premiere project from an MP4
An MP4 contains rendered frames and audio, not the original edit decisions. Supply the archived .prproj and media for native continuation, or plan a deliberate reconstruction using timecodes and shot information.
