It has not, however, produced a confirmed new fundamental law on the level of general relativity or quantum mechanics in the evidence available today. The crucial distinction is between an algorithm that proposes an equation and a scientific community that validates a principle across independent experiments.
What “discovering a law” means
The phrase covers several very different achievements. A program may fit a useful equation to one dataset, rediscover a law that humans already know, or uncover a genuinely new principle that survives tests in many settings. Treating those outcomes as equivalent exaggerates what current systems have achieved.

| Level | What the AI does | Scientific status | Examples in current evidence |
|---|---|---|---|
| Rediscovery | Recovers a known equation from measurements without being given its final form. | A demonstration that the method can extract structure from data; it does not change physics. | Kepler’s third law, Newtonian gravitation, Einstein’s relativistic time-dilation law. |
| New effective or emergent relationship | Finds a compact rule that describes a material, experiment, dataset, or limited regime. | Potentially a real scientific result, but its validity may be local rather than fundamental. | The most plausible near-term category for AI-assisted discovery. |
| New fundamental law | Proposes a broadly valid principle that survives independent tests and changes accepted theory. | Requires replication, new predictions, and experimental or observational confirmation. | No confirmed example is reported by the cited evidence. |
A fitted expression is therefore a hypothesis, not automatically a law. Scientists must establish what the variables mean, where the equation applies, how uncertain its parameters are, and whether another experiment could falsify it.

AI-Descartes combines symbolic regression with logical reasoning
The AI-Descartes system, reported in Nature Communications in 2023, searches for explicit mathematical expressions while using logical reasoning to distinguish candidates that have similar errors on the available data. It demonstrated rediscovery of Kepler’s third law, Einstein’s relativistic time-dilation law, and Langmuir’s adsorption theory. The significance is methodological: the system can use theoretical constraints to choose a scientifically meaningful formula rather than merely selecting the curve that fits measured points most closely.

That result is not evidence that the system invented relativity or celestial mechanics. Those laws were already known, and the experiment tested whether an automated procedure could recover them from observations and background principles.
Solar System trajectories reveal a hidden-parameter workflow
In work by Lemos, Jeffrey, Cranmer, Ho, and Battaglia published in 2023, a graph neural network was trained on 30 years of Solar System trajectory data. Symbolic regression then translated the learned relationships into an equation equivalent to Newton’s law of gravitation. The procedure also inferred planetary masses and physical constants without being supplied those values.
This is a strong proof that machine learning can extract governing equations and unknown properties from real observations. It remains a rediscovery of known gravitation, not a new fundamental force. The result also illustrates a practical division of labor: a neural model handles a complex representation of trajectories, while symbolic regression produces an interpretable formula that physicists can inspect.

A 2024 review by Makke and Chawla describes symbolic regression as interpretable because it searches explicit mathematical expressions. It also reports that most published work still relies on synthetic data and that applications to real physics remain limited and nascent. A 2023 review in Nature characterizes AI as a way to augment hypothesis generation, experiment design, data collection, and interpretation, while identifying unresolved problems in data reliability, generalization, reproducibility, uncertainty, and implementation.

How AI searches for equations
Equation-discovery systems do not simply “look at data” and read off a law. They make a sequence of choices that strongly affects the answer.
1. Prepare observations and variables
Researchers select measurements, align timestamps, estimate uncertainties, and decide which quantities are candidates for inputs or outputs. Noise, missing variables, calibration errors, and biased sampling can all create patterns that look physical but are not.
2. Define an operator library
Symbolic regression constructs expressions from an allowed set of operations, such as addition, multiplication, powers, logarithms, exponentials, or trigonometric functions. The search may also include constants, derivatives, or domain-specific functions. The set matters: as Makke and Chawla emphasize, the predicted expression depends on the mathematical operations made available to the system. A law requiring an operation that was excluded cannot be discovered by that run.
3. Balance fit against simplicity
The algorithm evaluates how closely each expression matches the observations and how complicated the expression is. This is a form of model selection: a short equation is preferred when it explains the data nearly as well as a longer one. But “simplicity” has no single universal definition. Counting symbols, measuring description length, and applying a physics-informed penalty can rank the same candidates differently.

4. Add physical priors and logical constraints
Symmetries, dimensional analysis, conservation assumptions, and logical axioms shrink the search space. They can reject a formula with inconsistent units or impossible relationships and can distinguish two equations with similar numerical error. These priors make the search more efficient, but they also mean the result is not theory-free. Human choices help determine which hypotheses are reachable.
5. Use neural or graph models when the representation is difficult
Neural networks can learn a compact representation of a dynamical system, and graph neural networks can encode entities and interactions such as planets and gravitational influences. A subsequent symbolic-regression stage can convert that learned representation into an equation. A neural simulator may predict accurately while remaining opaque; symbolic translation supplies a candidate expression that can be examined and tested.
6. Test outside the training data
A candidate must predict measurements that were not used to fit it. Researchers should vary initial conditions, timescales, parameter ranges, instruments, and physical regimes where possible. Uncertainty estimates should show how sensitive the equation is to noise and limited coverage. A formula that works only inside the training distribution is a model of that dataset, not a general law.

How the main approaches compare
| Approach | Interpretability | Prior physics required | Data efficiency | Noise and distribution shift | Search or compute cost | Independent validation |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Symbolic regression | High when it returns a short, dimensionally coherent equation. | Operator choices, variable definitions, and optional symmetries or conservation rules. | Can be data-efficient when the true relationship is compact; sparse or noisy data remain difficult. | Can overfit noise or select the wrong form; explicit validation is essential. | Expression spaces grow rapidly as operators and variables are added. | Must be demonstrated with held-out data and, ideally, new experiments. |
| Neural or graph models | Usually lower for the internal representation; higher if paired with symbolic regression. | Architecture, graph structure, invariances, and training assumptions. | Often benefits from large datasets, although the right inductive bias can reduce requirements. | May fail sharply outside the training regime and can hide systematic errors. | Training large models can be expensive; inference is usually cheaper than the search. | Requires stress tests, uncertainty analysis, and independent observations. |
| Human-guided hybrid systems | Potentially high because scientists inspect variables, equations, and constraints. | Substantial domain knowledge, including dimensions, symmetries, and conservation laws. | Can make better use of small datasets by ruling out implausible candidates. | Human assumptions may improve robustness but can also exclude an unexpected law. | Lower search burden after constraints, with more expert time required. | Still depends on replication and experimental or observational confirmation. |
Why a plausible equation is not yet a new law
Confounding and hidden variables
Two measured quantities can correlate because both respond to an unmeasured variable. A formula may appear universal when the dataset covers only one environmental condition. Without interventions or additional observations, the algorithm cannot reliably separate causation from coincidence.

Noise and measurement bias
Real instruments have finite precision, selection effects, drift, and missing values. Symbolic systems can produce elegant expressions that describe those artifacts. Repeated measurements, calibration checks, and explicit uncertainty propagation are needed before a pattern earns physical interpretation.
Limited coverage and distribution shift
Neural models and equations fitted to one range of energies, temperatures, distances, or times may fail elsewhere. A law should make successful predictions in regimes that were not represented in training. Out-of-distribution failure is especially important when a model is extrapolating rather than interpolating.
Search-space and simplicity bias
There are enormous numbers of mathematically equivalent or nearly equivalent expressions. Different random seeds, preprocessing choices, operator libraries, or complexity penalties can return different formulas. The shortest expression found is not guaranteed to be the deepest explanation, and a more complex expression is not automatically wrong.
Reproducibility and independent confirmation
Other groups must be able to reproduce the result from documented data, code, preprocessing, and search settings. Independent instruments or observations should confirm the prediction. For a fundamental claim, a new experiment designed to distinguish the candidate from established theories is indispensable.

What would be required to claim a new fundamental law?
- State the domain and variables precisely. Define units, reference frames, boundary conditions, and the regime in which the equation is proposed.
- Publish the discovery procedure. Report the operator library, priors, preprocessing, random seeds, complexity metric, and uncertainty method so another team can repeat the search.
- Separate fitting from prediction. Hold back data, test new initial conditions, and compare the candidate with established theories using pre-specified metrics.
- Derive distinctive predictions. A new law must predict an observable result that competing explanations do not already require.
- Run independent tests. Use different datasets, instruments, laboratories, or astronomical observations. Confirmation by the same pipeline alone is insufficient.
- Check consistency with existing physics. Show whether the expression reduces to known laws in appropriate limits, respects dimensions and symmetries, and explains any apparent conflict.
- Invite adversarial analysis. Other researchers should try to find counterexamples, hidden variables, leakage from the test set, and alternative equations with equal or better predictive performance.
Only after this process would the scientific community consider whether the result is a new principle rather than a useful fit or an emergent rule.
Where AI is most likely to help next
Complex, high-volume observations
Modern instruments produce more data than researchers can inspect manually. AI can rank anomalies, identify candidate variables, and search families of equations across many experiments. Its comparative advantage is speed and breadth, not automatic judgment.
Emergent behavior in materials and many-body systems
Materials, fluids, plasmas, and biological-physical systems may exhibit compact relationships that are difficult to derive from microscopic theory. A data-driven equation that accurately describes a restricted regime can still be scientifically valuable even if it is not fundamental.

Experiment and measurement design
Once several candidate equations fit existing data, an AI system can identify which new measurement would distinguish them most efficiently. This active-learning loop may reduce the number of experiments needed, provided scientists verify that the proposed measurement is physically feasible and that its uncertainty is understood.
Parameter inference in established models
The Solar System example shows a near-term strength: extracting masses, constants, or other hidden properties from trajectories while recovering a known governing law. Such inference can improve simulations and expose discrepancies without claiming a revolution in basic theory.
A practical checklist for evaluating an AI “new law” claim
- Is the equation genuinely new, or is it a rediscovery of a named law?
- Were the data real measurements or synthetic examples generated from a known formula?
- Which operators, symmetries, conservation rules, and variables were allowed?
- Were uncertainties, missing data, and measurement bias modeled?
- Does the equation predict held-out and out-of-distribution observations?
- Does it outperform established theories on a pre-specified test rather than only on training error?
- Can independent researchers reproduce the result?
- Has an experiment or observation been designed specifically to falsify it?
- Does the claim concern a material or regime-specific relationship rather than a universal principle?
Has AI discovered a new law of physics?
Not in the strongest sense supported by the current evidence. AI systems have recovered major known laws, inferred hidden parameters, and proposed interpretable relationships. Those achievements show that machines can accelerate parts of the scientific method. They do not yet show an independently confirmed fundamental law that forces physics to replace a theory as consequential as general relativity or quantum mechanics.
The realistic near-term path is collaborative: scientists supply meaningful variables, physical constraints, experiments, and judgment; AI searches vast hypothesis spaces, detects structure, and proposes equations worth testing. A discovery becomes physics only when nature—not the training set—repeatedly confirms it.
