1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesYes—some AI devices work without internet access, but only when the model and the requested feature run on the device itself. Local AI can summarize text, rewrite a note, classify content or perform other supported tasks with Wi‑Fi and mobile data disabled. Cloud search, current information, remote accounts and actions that contact online services still require a connection. A smartphone is one possible host for local AI, not a universal requirement: compatible models can also run on tablets, laptops, robots and other edge hardware.
What “offline AI” actually means
Android Developers defines on-device AI as processing prompts and data directly on the hardware where the feature is running. In that arrangement, your input is sent to a model stored on the device, the device performs the inference, and a response is returned without contacting a remote server. Android’s Gemini Nano documentation says this design can provide rich generative-AI experiences without a network connection or sending data to the cloud, and that model functionality can remain reliable with spotty or no internet.

Offline does not mean that every feature in an AI product remains available. A device may contain a local model while its broader assistant still depends on vendor servers. The meaningful question is therefore not “Is this an AI device?” but “Which model and which feature execute locally?”

Private text processing
A local model can handle tasks that fit its installed capabilities and resource limits, such as rewriting a passage, extracting action items, classifying text, drafting a short response or summarizing a document already stored on the device. These operations do not require a live web connection because the source material and the model are both local.

Limited voice and vision features
Some devices also expose local speech, image or multimodal functions. Whether a particular voice command, transcription mode or image question works offline depends on the model version, the device’s hardware acceleration and the software feature. Product documentation should identify supported modalities rather than assuming that every feature shown in an online demonstration is available without connectivity.
Consistent operation in poor coverage
Local inference is useful on flights, in remote locations, during network outages and in environments where sensitive text should not leave the device. It can also reduce the delay caused by sending a request to a distant server, although a larger local model may run more slowly than a cloud model.
What still needs internet access
A fully offline device cannot automatically browse current web pages, retrieve live prices or news, check traffic, query a remote database, send a message, place an online order or call an account-based service. Maps, calendar changes, email delivery and smart-home actions usually involve remote systems even if a local model understands the command.
Cloud models also provide capabilities that exceed a small on-device model’s memory and context limits. Gemini Nano documentation notes token limits, hardware constraints and model capability boundaries; Android recommends hybrid inference when a request is too large or complex for local execution. In a hybrid design, a simple request stays on the device while a more demanding one is sent to a cloud service when a connection is available.

Do you need a smartphone?
No, not for local inference in general. A phone is simply a convenient host with a processor, memory, microphone, camera and battery. Google DeepMind describes Gemma 3n as “privacy-first, offline-ready” and says it can run locally on phones, tablets and laptops. The same principle applies to other edge hardware when it has a compatible runtime and enough computing resources.
However, many consumer AI products are designed around an internet-connected phone. A companion app may perform setup, provide the user interface, authenticate an account, download the model or relay commands to vendor servers. Google’s Gemini assistant product documentation states that an internet connection, an Android device and setup are required for that assistant experience. That requirement describes the product workflow, not a law of physics that makes all local AI phone-dependent.
Typical host devices
| Host | What it can provide | What to verify |
|---|---|---|
| Phone | Portable local text, voice, camera and accessibility features | Supported model, memory, processor or neural accelerator, battery impact and regional availability |
| Tablet | Larger screen and battery for local documents, education or field work | Operating-system support, model download size and whether the app is phone-only |
| Laptop | More memory and sustained cooling for larger local models | Runtime compatibility, RAM, graphics or neural-processing support and offline licensing |
| Robot or edge computer | Local perception and control where connectivity is intermittent | Safety controls, sensor support, thermal limits and a documented offline mode |
How local AI works on the device
- Model installation: The model files, tokenizer and supporting runtime are downloaded while the device is online. A device cannot use a model that has never been installed.
- Hardware execution: The runtime schedules work on the CPU, GPU or a neural-processing accelerator. More capable hardware generally handles larger models, longer prompts and multimodal input more effectively.
- Local inference: Your prompt is converted into tokens, processed by the model and converted back into text or another output. No network request is needed for this step when the feature is genuinely local.
- Application action: The surrounding app decides whether to keep the result on the device or invoke an online service. A local model may understand “remind me tomorrow,” but creating a synchronized calendar event can still require account access.
Android’s Gemini Nano documentation specifically states that AICore does not have direct internet access. That limits accidental network use by the model runtime, but it does not make every application feature offline: the app can still use separate online components when connectivity returns.

- Read the feature requirements. Identify the exact model and feature marked on-device or offline. Do not rely only on a product’s general “AI” label.
- Complete setup online. Sign in if required, install system and app updates, download the model and grant only the permissions the feature needs. Some products require online authentication before local use is enabled.
- Record the baseline. Test a short task, a longer document and any voice or image function you intend to use. Note response time, maximum input length and whether the app displays a cloud-processing notice.
- Disconnect deliberately. Turn on airplane mode, then confirm Wi‑Fi and mobile data are off. Bluetooth accessories may remain connected, but they do not provide internet access.
- Repeat the tasks. A successful local task should return a result without a network error. Try a clearly online request, such as current weather, to confirm that the app distinguishes unsupported cloud work from local processing.
- Reconnect for maintenance. Restore connectivity periodically for security updates, model improvements, account synchronization and any queued online actions.
Offline versus cloud AI: the practical trade-offs
| Factor | On-device model | Cloud model or service |
|---|---|---|
| Connectivity | Works for supported operations with no internet | Requires a network connection to send the request and receive the result |
| Privacy | Prompt and source data can remain on the device; confirm the app’s own telemetry policy | Data is transmitted to a provider under that service’s terms |
| Freshness | Knowledge is limited to the installed model and local files | Can retrieve current web, account or database information when authorized |
| Latency | No round trip; speed depends on local hardware and model size | Includes network delay but may use substantially larger hardware |
| Capability | Bound by token limits, memory, thermal headroom and supported modalities | Often supports larger context, broader tools and more complex generation |
| Power and storage | Consumes battery and storage; sustained workloads can create heat | Uses less local compute but depends on connectivity and service availability |
| Live actions | Cannot browse or call remote services while fully offline | Can search, synchronize and act through connected services |
Hardware limits that determine offline quality
Memory and model size
Local models compete with the operating system and other apps for RAM. A model with a larger parameter count or longer context window needs more memory and storage. If the device cannot reserve enough memory, the feature may refuse the request, shorten the context or fall back to a cloud model.
Token and context limits
Token limits cap how much text the model can read or generate in one operation. A long report may need to be split into sections before summarization. The limit is a model property, so an app update can change it even when the device hardware stays the same.
Heat, battery and sustained speed
Generating many tokens or processing images keeps the processor active. Phones may reduce clock speed after heating, while a laptop with active cooling may sustain a higher rate. Check battery behavior under the workload you actually plan to use rather than assuming a short demonstration reflects continuous use.

Example: Gemini Nano, Gemma 3n and Pixel phones
Gemini Nano is Google’s documented example of an on-device model for Android features. Its local design supports operation without sending prompts to the cloud, but its documentation also lists capability, token and hardware boundaries. Google recommends hybrid inference for requests that exceed those boundaries.

Google DeepMind presents Gemma 3n as an offline-ready model for local operation on phones, tablets and laptops. “Offline-ready” indicates that local execution is a design goal; it does not promise that every application built with the model, every tool call or every update works without a network.
Google identifies Pixel 9 and later as Gemini-enabled phones. That label does not guarantee that every Gemini feature works offline. Software version, hardware, region, language, account status and the specific feature determine what is available.

The app says “connect to the internet”
The requested function is probably cloud-only, the local model was not downloaded, or setup authentication is incomplete. Reconnect, finish setup and look for a separately listed on-device feature. If no offline mode is documented, treat the requirement as permanent rather than a temporary error.
A short prompt works but a document fails
The document may exceed the model’s token or memory limit. Split it into smaller sections, reduce included attachments or choose a device and model with more memory. Do not assume that repeated retries will remove a hard limit.

Results are slower after several minutes
Thermal throttling or battery-saving software may have reduced processor speed. Allow the device to cool, connect it to power if safe, close competing apps and reduce the model size or output length.
The answer is outdated
That is expected from a disconnected model whose knowledge is fixed at its training or update point. Use local files for current facts, or reconnect and use a service that explicitly performs live retrieval.
A supposedly private feature still transmits data
Inspect the application’s network permissions and privacy documentation. The model runtime may be local while analytics, synchronization, crash reporting or a separate assistant component communicates online. Airplane-mode testing can reveal whether the core task truly works without a connection.

- Demand an explicit processing statement: Look for “on-device,” “local inference” or a named offline mode tied to a specific feature.
- Check the setup dependency: Confirm whether initial downloads, account authentication or periodic activation require internet access.
- Match hardware to workload: Compare available RAM, storage, accelerator support, cooling and battery capacity with the model’s published requirements.
- Confirm modalities: Verify text, voice, image and file support separately; one local modality does not imply all others.
- Separate understanding from action: A device may parse a command offline but still need connectivity to send a message, update a calendar or control a remote system.
- Read regional and software qualifications: Availability can vary by country, language, operating-system release and account type.
- Plan updates: Offline operation does not eliminate the need to reconnect occasionally for security patches, model updates and policy changes.
The bottom line for buyers and travelers
An AI device can work completely offline for a defined set of local tasks when its model is installed and the hardware can run it. It cannot reproduce the full experience of a connected assistant: live information, web search, remote accounts and online actions require a network. A smartphone is common because consumer assistants use it for setup and connectivity, but local models also run on tablets, laptops and dedicated edge hardware. Evaluate the exact model-feature combination, not the product’s general AI branding, before you depend on it without Wi‑Fi or mobile data.
