A result is a model output produced for a particular task, data distribution and decision threshold. Its reliability depends on whether the system has seen similar generators, languages, cameras, editing histories and compression. Use a detector flag to start corroboration—checking provenance and context and obtaining qualified human review—not to end the investigation.
What an AI deepfake detector actually does
A detector does not observe truth directly. It analyzes patterns in pixels, frames, audio waveforms, faces, text or file history and estimates whether those patterns fit a defined class. The class might be a face swap, synthetic speech, an altered image, manipulated video, or content with a particular provenance signal.

That distinction matters because different tasks produce different outputs. A face-swap detector is not automatically an identity-verification system. A manipulation-localization model may identify altered regions without determining who made the edit. A provenance tool reconstructs a file’s history rather than judging visual realism. A text discriminator answers a different question again. A score from one task cannot be transferred to another.

Most systems apply a threshold to a continuous model score. Above the threshold, the interface may say “likely synthetic”; below it, “likely authentic.” The underlying number can be an uncalibrated score rather than a true probability. A vendor’s cutoff also reflects its chosen balance between missed fakes and wrongly flagged genuine files.

Why a high score is not proof
A displayed percentage is meaningful only with its operating definition. “90% fake” could mean a calibrated probability under a specified test population, or merely that the model score is 0.90 on an arbitrary scale. Without the model’s calibration method, threshold, confidence interval and test conditions, the number cannot be read as a universal chance that your file is fake.
Even a calibrated probability describes a population of comparable cases. If a system labels 90% of similar files as synthetic and is properly calibrated, roughly nine in ten such cases would be expected to be synthetic over the long run. That expectation changes when your media comes from a different generator, language, camera pipeline, editing workflow or social platform.
Two kinds of error are always present:
- False positive: genuine media is flagged as synthetic. This can wrongly remove a journalist’s evidence, reject an applicant, damage a person’s reputation or escalate a dispute.
- False negative: synthetic or manipulated media is accepted as genuine. This can enable fraud, impersonation, harassment or a false narrative.
The more serious error depends on the decision. A newsroom deciding whether to publish may prioritize avoiding a false accusation; an incident-response team may initially tolerate more alerts so it does not miss an attack. You need the error trade-off for your use case, not a generic accuracy headline.
How to read a detector’s accuracy claims
Ask for the complete evaluation rather than a single accuracy figure. NIST guidance says trustworthy claims should disclose realistic representative test sets, methodology, false-positive and false-negative rates, and evidence that performance holds outside training conditions.
| Question | Why it changes the result |
|---|---|
| What modality and task were tested? | Image, video, audio and text have different artifacts; authenticity, localization and identity tasks are not interchangeable. |
| What was the dataset? | Curated, high-quality samples can make performance look better than results on reposted or captured media. |
| How common were fakes in the test? | Prevalence affects the chance that a positive alert is correct in actual use. |
| Which generators and versions were included? | A model trained on older synthesis methods can fail on unfamiliar generators. |
| What post-processing was applied? | Resizing, blur, noise, low bitrate, screen capture and platform recompression can erase or mimic detector cues. |
| Were thresholds and confidence intervals reported? | A cutoff determines the false-positive/false-negative balance; intervals show how uncertain the estimate is. |
| Was there external validation? | Independent, time-separated and in-the-wild testing is stronger evidence than a split from the training corpus. |
Accuracy alone can conceal an unusable system. If genuine files dominate a test set, a classifier that almost always says “genuine” may obtain a high accuracy while missing most fakes. Sensitivity (true-positive rate), specificity (true-negative rate), precision, recall, false-positive rate and false-negative rate reveal the trade-offs. Receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curves and area under the curve (AUC) show performance across thresholds, but they still depend on the data and protocol used to create them.

What real-world testing shows
In-the-wild media is harder than benchmark media
The Deepfake-Eval-2024 benchmark, reported by its authors in 2025, assembled 45 hours of video, 56.5 hours of audio and 1,975 images collected from 88 websites in 52 languages. Compared with earlier benchmarks, AUC for open-source detectors fell by 50% on video, 48% on audio and 45% on images. Commercial systems performed better than off-the-shelf open-source models, but they still did not reach forensic-analyst accuracy.
Those results do not mean every detector is poor. They show that performance measured on older or cleaner benchmarks can collapse when media is newer, multilingual, compressed or otherwise unfamiliar. A result on a laboratory sample should not be presented as the expected result for a social-media repost.
Generator familiarity can dominate morph detection
A NIST 2025 morph-detection example illustrates the same limitation. In the best cases, a single-image detector reached 100% detection at a 1% false-detection rate when it was trained on the software that generated the morphs. On morphs made with unfamiliar software, accuracy could fall below 40%.
Differential detectors achieved 72%–90% accuracy in best cases by comparing a questioned image with a known genuine image of the same person. That extra reference is a requirement, not a minor convenience. The figures demonstrate why a headline result must name the generating software, comparison setup and false-detection rate.
NIST’s testing priorities
NIST’s Guardians of Forensic Evidence program targets the gap between research accuracy and operational usability. It calls for testing newer generation methods, representative “dirty” evidence such as low-bitrate surveillance footage and social-media compression, ROC/AUC analysis, and continuous revalidation after software updates. A detector that has not been tested under those conditions has an unmeasured distribution shift.

Why two detectors disagree
Disagreement is evidence of uncertainty, not proof that one system is correct. Models may have been trained on different generators, languages, codecs and editing artifacts. One may inspect facial landmarks while another looks for frequency patterns or file-level signals. Their thresholds may also be set for different error costs.
Input handling creates another difference. A service might analyze every video frame, select only a face crop, extract a short audio segment or reject low-resolution material. Cropping, transcoding and an automatic enhancement step can change the evidence each model sees. Version updates can alter scores even when the file is unchanged.
When outputs conflict, record the exact file hash, model name and version, timestamp, threshold and any preprocessing. Then ask whether the systems addressed the same modality and task. A disagreement should trigger provenance checks and human examination rather than a vote between opaque percentages.
What a 90% result should mean in practice
- Identify the label. Confirm whether 90% is a probability, a normalized score or simply a risk band.
- Read the operating point. Find the threshold that turns the score into “fake” and the false-positive and false-negative rates at that threshold.
- Match the population. Check whether validation used the same language, generator family, camera, codec, resolution and reposting path.
- Estimate the base rate. In a setting where genuine files vastly outnumber fakes, even a low false-positive rate can produce many false alarms. In a heavily targeted setting, missed fakes may be the larger concern.
- Seek independent evidence. Preserve the original and examine provenance, source history, timestamps, surrounding reporting and a qualified reviewer’s findings.
Do not rewrite “90%” as “proven fake.” The defensible statement is that the file crossed this system’s threshold under its stated conditions and deserves further verification.

- Preserve the original. Download the highest-quality file available, retain metadata and record where and when it was obtained. Work on a copy so later analysis does not overwrite evidence.
- Define the question. Are you asking whether pixels were edited, whether a speaker’s voice was synthesized, whether a person’s identity was swapped, or whether the file has a trustworthy capture history?
- Run an appropriately matched detector. Note model version, input preparation, threshold and output. If the service refuses low-quality or unusual media, record that limitation.
- Check provenance and authenticity signals. Review available capture credentials, edit history, signatures, watermarks or labels. Their absence is not proof of fakery, because many genuine files have no provenance record.
- Verify source and context. Locate the earliest credible posting, compare independent recordings, inspect date and location claims, and look for signs that a real clip has been presented out of context.
- Obtain qualified human review. For consequential decisions, use a forensic analyst who can document methods, limitations and alternative explanations.
- Make a proportionate decision. Treat the combined evidence as support for a stated confidence level, not as a binary certainty manufactured by one score.
Guidance by media type
Images
Single-image detectors may be sensitive to generation artifacts, but resizing, screenshots and platform recompression can remove those clues. Morph detection is especially dependent on the software used to create the morph; differential analysis requires a known genuine comparison image. Preserve the native file and ask whether the system tested the same camera and editing pipeline.
Video
Video systems may aggregate frame-level decisions, inspect audio separately or analyze temporal consistency. A short, heavily compressed clip can provide little usable evidence. Ask whether the reported score covers the entire clip or only selected frames, and whether the benchmark included social-media encoding and low-bitrate footage.
Audio
Background noise, telephone codecs, language and microphone characteristics can affect spoof detectors. A score from an English speech benchmark should not be generalized to another language or to a reposted voice message without matching validation.
Text
Text detectors face changing writing models, editing by humans and translation or paraphrasing. A classifier’s output is not authorship proof. Use document history, drafts, source records and human assessment when attribution matters.

Best Value
Common failure modes and appropriate responses
| Symptom | Likely explanation | Response |
|---|---|---|
| Very high score on a clean sample, uncertain result after reposting | Compression or resizing changed the artifacts used by the model. | Analyze the original file and obtain validation results for the platform and codec involved. |
| Different tools give opposite labels | Different training data, tasks, preprocessing or thresholds. | Compare definitions and operating points; preserve outputs and seek human review. |
| Genuine image flagged | False positive, unfamiliar camera/editing pipeline or a detector tuned for another domain. | Do not publish an accusation; check provenance, source history and independent copies. |
| Synthetic clip passes as genuine | New generator, language, modality or post-processing outside the training distribution. | Treat the negative result as limited evidence and investigate context and origin. |
| Vendor advertises one universal accuracy number | Missing task, dataset, prevalence and error-rate context. | Request the full evaluation protocol and external-validation results. |
| Score changes after a service update | Model, threshold or preprocessing changed. | Record versioned results and require revalidation before relying on the new output. |
Where provenance, watermarking and human expertise fit
NIST’s synthetic-content transparency overview treats authentication, provenance tracking, watermarking, labeling, detection, testing, auditing and maintenance as complementary approaches. Provenance can show how a file was captured or edited; a watermark may signal an originating system; a label can disclose declared synthetic content. None is universal: records can be absent, stripped, forged or unavailable for older media.
Detection therefore answers only one part of the question. Provenance and source verification address origin and chain of custody, while forensic review considers the entire evidentiary context. Combining independent signals is more defensible than asking one classifier to prove authenticity.
Questions to ask before relying on a result
- What exact task and modality does the model support?
- Is the number calibrated, and what does the threshold represent?
- What are false-positive, false-negative, sensitivity, specificity, precision and recall figures on representative data?
- How recent are the test samples, and which generators, languages and software versions were included?
- How does performance change after compression, resizing, blur, noise, screen capture or other post-processing?
- Was there independent external validation, and are confidence intervals reported?
- How are model updates documented, audited and revalidated?
- Can the system provide an audit trail and support qualified human review?
NIST’s AI Risk Management Framework defines validation as confirmation through objective evidence that requirements for a specific intended use have been fulfilled. Apply that standard to the decision in front of you: evidence that a model works for one benchmark is not evidence that it works for your file.
Bottom line
Trust an AI deepfake detector as a calibrated clue whose value depends on task, threshold, data and conditions—not as an oracle. Real-world tests show substantial drops from benchmark performance, and unfamiliar generators or ordinary social-media processing can change the result. Preserve the original, interpret the error rates and base rate, compare the media with its source and provenance, and involve a qualified human when the consequences are serious. A detector flag or a clean result should change what you investigate next; it should not, by itself, decide what is true.
