Can AI Conduct Reliable Scientific Research Without Human Experts?

Not yet. AI can search literature, generate hypotheses, write code and outperform experts on some tightly defined prediction tasks. The evidence does not show that any current system can independently choose important questions, run safe experiments, detect its own errors, reproduce results and publish accountable conclusions as reliably as an expert research team. The dependable model today is human-led research with AI assistance, not an unsupervised “AI scientist.”

What “reliable scientific research” actually requires

A scientific result is more than a plausible answer or a polished paper. Reliability requires a chain of decisions and checks:

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

  • Defining a question that is significant, testable and ethically permissible.
  • Finding and weighing prior evidence, including contradictory or negative results.
  • Choosing an appropriate study design, measurements, controls and statistical analysis.
  • Writing and running code without hidden data, numerical or logic errors.
  • Conducting experiments safely and responding correctly to unexpected hazards.
  • Reproducing important findings with independent data, code or experiments.
  • Reporting uncertainty, provenance, limitations and conflicts of interest.
  • Taking responsibility for the claims submitted to the scientific record.

AI systems can assist with individual links in this chain. “Conducting research on its own” would mean completing the cycle with little or no expert oversight. No published result establishes that capability for current systems across disciplines.

What the strongest tests show

Different evaluations measure different slices of research. Their results cannot be collapsed into one universal reliability percentage.

Evaluation What was tested Result What it does—and does not—show
GPQA (OpenAI, 2023; 2025) PhD-level, closed-ended questions written by experts GPT-4: 39%; reported expert baseline: 70%. GPT-5.2: 92% (OpenAI, 2025). Knowledge and answer selection on difficult questions; not study design, experimentation or accountability.
BrainBench (Nature Human Behaviour, 2024) Constrained prediction of neuroscience results Mean LLM accuracy 81.4%, compared with 63.4% for human experts. A narrow prediction advantage under benchmark conditions; not open-ended discovery.
PaperQA2 (arXiv preprint, 2024) Literature question answering and contradiction finding in biology papers Exceeded human performance on a literature benchmark; identified 2.34 ± 1.99 contradictions per sampled paper, 70% validated by human experts. Promising evidence synthesis assistance; validation was still performed by people and the task was literature-based.
PaperBench (OpenAI, 2025) Reproducing results from 20 ICML papers Best tested agent averaged 21.0%; models did not exceed the human PhD baseline. Realistic replication work remains difficult, especially when code, data and methodological details are complex.
Replication experiment (Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, 2026) Teams attempting empirical reproductions under human-only, AI-assisted and AI-led conditions Human-only teams reproduced 94% of results, AI-assisted teams 91%, and AI-led teams 37%. Human-only teams also found significantly more major coding errors. Greater autonomy produced a large reliability loss in this experiment; AI assistance did not outperform human-led work.
LabSafety Bench (Nature Machine Intelligence, 2025) 19 models tested on 765 multiple-choice questions, 404 realistic scenarios and 3,128 open-ended tasks No model exceeded 70% hazard-identification accuracy. Insufficient consistency for unsupervised laboratory operation, where a missed hazard can have serious consequences.
Humanity’s Last Exam (Nature, 2026) Very difficult, closed-ended academic questions High scores indicate expert-level performance on verifiable questions. The authors explicitly state that such scores alone do not demonstrate autonomous research capability or artificial general intelligence.

Where AI is already useful

Literature search and synthesis

An AI system can expand search terms, cluster papers, extract methods and compare claims across a large reading list. PaperQA2’s contradiction-finding result illustrates why this is valuable: it surfaced an average of 2.34 contradictions per sampled biology paper, and human experts validated 70% of those findings. A researcher still has to check whether the apparent contradiction comes from different populations, definitions, endpoints or experimental conditions. Treat the output as an auditable reading aid, not an automatic review.

Hypothesis generation

Models can propose mechanisms, controls, alternative explanations and follow-up experiments quickly. Their breadth is useful during brainstorming, particularly when a team asks for competing hypotheses rather than a single confident answer. Novel-sounding suggestions may be physically impossible, already published or based on a misread result, so each proposal needs a literature and feasibility check.

Code scaffolding and analysis options

AI can draft data-cleaning scripts, statistical-model templates, unit tests and alternative analyses. The PNAS replication results show why generated code cannot be accepted on fluency alone: human-only teams found significantly more major coding errors, and AI-led teams reproduced only 37% of results. A qualified analyst must inspect assumptions, run tests, compare outputs with an independent implementation and examine edge cases.

Closed-ended prediction

BrainBench’s 81.4% mean LLM accuracy versus 63.4% for human experts demonstrates that a model can outperform people on a constrained neuroscience-result prediction task. This is a genuine capability, but the task supplies a defined format and answer space. Selecting a research question, deciding what evidence would change a belief and handling an unanticipated result are different problems.

Why high benchmark scores do not make an autonomous scientist

Scope changes the difficulty

Closed-ended questions have a known target and usually a verifiable answer. Open-ended research requires deciding what to measure, which variables matter and when evidence is strong enough to stop. A system can be excellent at answering a supplied question while being poor at selecting a worthwhile one.

Tools and data are part of the result

Replication depends on access to the exact data, software versions, random seeds, instruments and undocumented decisions used in the original work. PaperBench’s 21.0% average across 20 ICML papers shows how quickly performance falls when an agent must reconstruct a real study rather than answer a question about it.

Errors can be plausible

Scientific failures often look reasonable: a mislabeled column, leakage between training and test sets, an incorrect unit conversion, an invalid statistical assumption or a citation that does not support the sentence. A fluent model may not signal uncertainty at the point where an expert would stop and investigate.

Safety has asymmetric consequences

In a laboratory, one missed incompatibility, exposure route or pressure hazard can outweigh many correct recommendations. LabSafety Bench found no model above 70% hazard-identification accuracy across its varied tasks. That is far below the consistency required to authorize unsupervised work. Safety decisions need trained personnel, institutional controls, documented procedures and a person empowered to stop an experiment.

Accountability cannot be delegated

A model cannot hold a professional license, provide informed consent, accept legal responsibility or explain a result to a regulator. The Nature authors behind Humanity’s Last Exam made the distinction explicit: high accuracy on closed-ended, verifiable questions would not by itself suggest autonomous research capabilities.

Seven dimensions for judging an AI research workflow

When comparing systems or deciding how much autonomy to permit, evaluate these dimensions separately:

  1. Task scope: Is the system answering a defined question, or choosing and refining an open-ended investigation?
  2. Autonomy: Is it a drafting assistant, a co-pilot whose actions require approval, or an AI-led process that acts without review?
  3. Empirical verification: Are key outputs reproduced with independent data, code or experiments?
  4. Error detection: Can it identify major coding, statistical, measurement and citation errors rather than merely generate fixes?
  5. Laboratory safety: Does it identify hazards, predict consequences and respect controls under realistic scenarios?
  6. Transparency: Are sources, tool calls, data provenance, assumptions and uncertainty traceable?
  7. Human accountability: Who approves the protocol, releases results and signs the final claims?

A system should not receive more autonomy simply because it scores well on one dimension. For example, strong literature retrieval does not compensate for weak hazard recognition.

A dependable human-in-the-loop workflow

The safest practical pattern is to assign AI tasks that are reversible and easy to audit, while reserving consequential decisions for qualified researchers.

  1. Define the question and success criteria. A subject-matter expert states the population, intervention or variables, outcome, acceptable uncertainty and ethical boundaries. Record why the question matters before asking a model for ideas.
  2. Use AI to expand the search. Generate synonyms, related mechanisms and candidate papers. A human removes irrelevant, retracted, duplicated or out-of-scope sources and verifies every important citation in the original publication.
  3. Ask for competing hypotheses. Require supporting evidence, counter-evidence, assumptions and a proposed test for each hypothesis. Do not ask for a single “best” explanation without alternatives.
  4. Design the study with expert review. Check controls, sample size, randomization, blinding, measurement validity, statistical power, data-management rules and stopping criteria. Obtain required ethics, biosafety or other institutional approvals before work begins.
  5. Generate code in small, testable units. Have the model explain each function, write tests and identify assumptions. An expert runs the code in a controlled environment, inspects intermediate data and compares a critical analysis with an independently written version.
  6. Run safety checks before any physical action. A trained operator verifies chemical, biological, electrical, mechanical and waste hazards; confirms personal protective equipment and engineering controls; and keeps an emergency and stop-work plan available. AI output cannot substitute for the approved procedure.
  7. Reproduce the central result. Re-run the analysis from clean inputs, use an independent implementation or dataset where possible, and preserve versions, seeds, logs and deviations. Investigate discrepancies rather than averaging them away.
  8. Audit the draft paper. Check that every result is supported by recorded data, every citation says what the text claims, uncertainty is reported and limitations are not hidden. Disclose material AI use according to the relevant journal or institution’s policy.
  9. Approve publication claims personally. The responsible researchers, not the model, decide whether the evidence justifies the conclusion and accept accountability for the submitted record.

How to audit an AI-generated paper or report

  • Trace each numerical claim to a raw-data file, analysis output or cited source.
  • Recalculate headline statistics and confidence intervals independently.
  • Look for data leakage, post-hoc subgroup selection, duplicated observations and changes to exclusion rules.
  • Check units, sample identifiers, code dependencies, random seeds and software versions.
  • Read cited papers rather than trusting automatically generated summaries.
  • Ask a domain expert to challenge the strongest conclusion and propose a plausible alternative explanation.
  • Document prompts, model versions, retrieved context, edits and human approvals so another team can reconstruct the process.

A polished manuscript that fails these checks is an unverified draft, regardless of how authoritative its prose sounds.

What would be needed before removing expert oversight?

Evidence for reliable end-to-end autonomy would need to go beyond isolated benchmark wins. A convincing demonstration would show repeated, preregistered success across disciplines and model versions; independent replication of the system’s own discoveries; robust detection of coding and statistical errors; safe operation under realistic laboratory conditions; transparent provenance; calibrated uncertainty; and clear responsibility for ethical and legal decisions. It would also need to beat strong human teams on consequential, open-ended tasks—not only on questions with known answers.

Current results point in the opposite direction on the hardest parts. The PNAS experiment found 94% reproduction for human-only teams, 91% for AI-assisted teams and 37% for AI-led teams. Its authors concluded: “Despite rapid model advances, expert human judgment currently remains indispensable for reliable empirical verification.”

Verdict

AI is a powerful research instrument, not a dependable replacement for scientific experts. Use it to widen searches, accelerate drafting and analysis, and expose possible contradictions. Keep humans responsible for questions, methods, safety, verification and claims. Until systems demonstrate reliable performance across the full research cycle, unsupervised “AI scientists” remain an aspiration rather than a safe or established practice.
