Yes, but only when the hidden file is both present in the assistant’s execution environment and readable under that environment’s permissions. A test being hidden from a contestant, prompt, or public repository does not automatically make it invisible to an AI coding assistant. If the evaluator mounts the file into the agent’s workspace, grants a readable path, or exposes it through a subprocess, the assistant may be able to open it. If the file remains outside the mounted workspace, is blocked by operating-system controls, or is supplied only to a separate grading process, the assistant cannot directly read it.
What “hidden” means in an AI coding task
People use “hidden test” for several different arrangements, and they do not provide the same level of secrecy.

Hidden from the contestant but mounted for the agent
An evaluator may copy private tests into the same container or virtual machine used by the coding assistant, then run the assistant in a directory where those files are readable. The files are still hidden from the human participant and absent from the public repository, but they are not hidden from the process that has filesystem access. A model that can issue shell commands, inspect directories, or ask a tool to open files could discover them.

Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outside the agent’s workspace
A stronger arrangement keeps private tests in an evaluator-controlled directory that is not mounted into the assistant’s environment. The agent can edit source files and run public tests, but a path lookup for the private suite returns nothing because the files are not present in that filesystem view.

Present but denied
A file can exist on the host while the sandbox denies the agent’s user, process, or container access. Read-deny rules, separate users, container namespaces, and operating-system isolation can all prevent a process from traversing the directory. In this case, the test is physically present somewhere in the infrastructure but not available to the assistant.
Exposed indirectly
Even when a test file cannot be opened, an evaluator may accidentally reveal information through error messages, stack traces, coverage reports, generated snapshots, timing differences, or a command that prints the test contents. Secrecy therefore depends on the whole execution interface, not just on whether one path has restrictive permissions.
How the sandbox decides whether a file is readable
“Sandbox” is a boundary, not a universal product setting. OpenAI describes a sandbox as the technical execution boundary that determines where an agent can write, whether it can reach the network, and which paths remain protected. Anthropic describes filesystem isolation as ensuring that an agent can access or modify only specific directories. Those descriptions point to the controls that matter in practice.

|---|---|---|
| File presence | Was the private test copied into the agent’s filesystem at all? | A process cannot read a file that is not in its environment. |
| Mount and workspace layout | Which host directories, volumes, or secrets are mounted? | A broad mount can expose evaluator files unintentionally; a narrow mount can exclude them. |
| Read permission | Can the agent’s operating-system user traverse the directory and open the file? | Presence alone is insufficient when ownership, mode bits, ACLs, or policy rules deny reads. |
| Process isolation | Do shells and subprocesses inherit the same restrictions as the assistant? | A blocked primary tool is not protective if a child process receives broader access. |
| Network policy | Can code running in the sandbox contact a host, proxy, or external service? | Network access can leak files even when direct copying is restricted. |
| Grading boundary | Does private grading run after the editing session in another process or environment? | A separate grader prevents the assistant from inspecting the tests during development. |
| Audit trail | Are file reads, commands, and network requests logged? | Auditing helps detect accidental exposure and deliberate attempts to search for evaluator data. |
The practical decision is therefore: is the path mounted, can the process traverse it, and do all subprocesses and tools receive the same restrictions? The word “sandbox” by itself does not answer those questions.

Can Codex, Claude, or another coding assistant search for the tests?
An assistant does not have a magical view of the host. It can see what its tools expose: a terminal, file API, editor integration, test runner, or other subprocess. If those tools operate inside a filesystem that contains readable private tests, the model can potentially request directory listings or open the files. If the tools are confined to a smaller workspace, searches are limited to that view.
Subprocess inheritance is a common source of mistakes. A policy may restrict the interactive shell while a test runner, compiler, language server, or helper script runs with a different user, mount set, current directory, or environment variable. The evaluator must verify the effective permissions of every process launched during the session, not merely the settings displayed in the assistant’s user interface.
What the model can infer without opening a file
Direct reading is not the only information channel. Public tests, API documentation, type definitions, sample outputs, compiler diagnostics, and failed assertions can reveal expected behavior. A hidden test may also be partially disclosed by a message such as “expected 17, received 16,” by a stack trace containing a private path, or by a generated artifact that includes test names. These clues let an assistant infer requirements without ever obtaining the test source.
What it cannot infer reliably
Inference is not the same as access. Without the private file or a revealing output, the assistant cannot know every edge case, random seed, fixture value, or assertion. A well-designed evaluator keeps failures specific enough to debug the submitted code but avoids printing private test logic, source paths, credentials, or complete expected outputs.

When hidden tests are genuinely private
A robust benchmark or coding service separates the edit-and-test environment from the grading environment.
- Build a minimal workspace. Mount only the source files, documented fixtures, and public tests the assistant is intended to inspect. Do not mount the host’s project root if it also contains evaluator data.
- Store private tests elsewhere. Keep them in an evaluator-controlled path, a separate container, or a service that the agent cannot address. The grading component can fetch them only after the editing session ends.
- Apply operating-system restrictions. Use namespaces, container isolation, a dedicated user, read-only mounts where appropriate, and explicit allowlists for filesystem access. Confirm that directory traversal is blocked, not just direct opening of one filename.
- Constrain child processes. Make shells, compilers, test runners, language servers, and scripts inherit the same user, mounts, seccomp or policy profile, and network rules as the main agent process.
- Restrict network egress. Block arbitrary outbound connections or route them through a tightly controlled proxy. A private test that is unreadable locally can still be exfiltrated if a privileged helper or network route can retrieve it.
- Run grading after the session. Start the hidden-test process only after the assistant has finished editing and the workspace is sealed. A separate evaluator process or machine should consume the final artifact and return only the result needed for scoring.
- Audit the session. Record command execution, file-open attempts, mount configuration, subprocess identities, and network decisions. Review the logs for traversal outside the allowed workspace.
This design does not make the code secret from the evaluator; it prevents the editing agent from receiving the private test material in the first place.
How to tell whether a particular setup exposes hidden tests
Product documentation often describes a sandbox in broad terms, while the actual behavior depends on the selected mode and deployment. Check the following evidence for the specific assistant, IDE, benchmark runner, or cloud service.
- Workspace manifest: list the directories and volumes mounted for the session. Identify whether evaluator, cache, credential, or temporary directories are included.
- Effective identity: determine which operating-system user and groups run the assistant and every child process.
- Read and traverse tests: verify permissions on each parent directory as well as on the test file itself. A file mode that looks restrictive is ineffective if another mount exposes a copy.
- Subprocess check: launch the same shell, compiler, and test command used by the agent and compare their filesystem and network views.
- Network test: confirm whether outbound DNS, HTTP, package registries, metadata services, or internal hostnames are reachable. Disable routes that are unnecessary for the task.
- Output review: inspect failures, logs, snapshots, coverage files, and environment variables for private names or contents.
- Grading timing: document exactly when hidden tests become available and whether the assistant can continue running commands afterward.
For a local development session, a simple workspace inspection such as pwd and a constrained listing of the project directory can show what the agent has been given. That inspection does not prove that a host-level path is inaccessible; only the sandbox policy and an independent access test can establish the boundary.

Can a model “cheat” by searching the filesystem?
It can attempt to search any directories its tools permit, but a search is not a bypass for isolation. If the private suite is not mounted, a recursive search finds nothing. If the suite is mounted but unreadable, the search may reveal a filename while opening it fails. The security problem appears when the evaluator has accidentally mounted a readable copy, granted excessive permissions, exposed a privileged helper, or left sensitive data in logs and caches.
Search behavior should still be treated as a security signal. Evaluators can deny access outside an allowlisted workspace, reject commands that traverse protected paths, and log attempted reads. They should not rely solely on prompt instructions such as “do not inspect hidden tests”; those instructions cannot compensate for permissive filesystem or network controls.
Evidence about sandbox security and what it does not prove
Anthropic reported an 84% reduction in permission prompts from internal Claude Code sandboxing use in 2025. That figure describes an internal-usage outcome, not an 84% rate of hidden-test protection, secrecy, or attack prevention. It should not be used as a benchmark for whether a particular evaluator keeps private tests inaccessible.
SandboxEval, a 2025 assessment suite, tested 51 security properties covering sensitive-information exposure, filesystem manipulation, and external communication in LLM evaluation environments. Its purpose is to probe risks created when generated code is wrapped in unit tests and executed. The number of properties indicates the breadth of the threat surface; it does not establish that every assistant or benchmark passes them.
Best Value
Public documentation likewise does not establish one universal policy for every assistant, IDE, cloud runner, or operating system. Exact behavior changes with sandbox mode, mount configuration, host controls, product version, and evaluator implementation. Verify the current configuration rather than generalizing from a product name.
How to compare two assistants or benchmark runners
If the question is whether one system protects hidden tests better than another, compare their execution boundaries instead of comparing marketing labels.
| Comparison axis | Questions for the provider or operator |
|---|---|
| Mounted directories | Are only source and public fixtures mounted, or is the evaluator project tree included? |
| Permissions | Can the agent read, write, or traverse each mounted path? Are credentials and caches excluded? |
| Subprocess inheritance | Do every shell, script, compiler, and test runner use the same sandbox profile? |
| Network egress | Is outbound traffic blocked, allowlisted, proxied, or unrestricted? |
| Grading separation | Does private grading run in a separate process or environment after the agent exits? |
| Disclosure controls | Do errors, logs, artifacts, and APIs reveal private paths, assertions, or fixtures? |
| Auditability | Can operators review file access, command history, mounts, and network requests? |
A system with a smaller mounted workspace and a separate grader generally offers a stronger confidentiality boundary than one that places public and private tests in the same readable directory, regardless of which model generates the code.

Bottom line for developers and evaluators
An AI coding assistant can access a hidden test when the evaluator makes that test reachable and readable inside the assistant’s execution environment. “Hidden” from a repository or human is not equivalent to hidden from a process. To keep tests private, do not mount them during the editing session; isolate the grader, restrict operating-system and network access, enforce the same policy on subprocesses, and audit what the session can read and transmit.
