AI chatbots are useful for explaining voting terms and finding the right election office, but they are not a safe final authority for dates, deadlines, polling places, eligibility, candidate lists, ballot rules or results. Treat every chatbot answer as a lead. Confirm the details on an official state, local or national election authority website before you act or share the information.
What an AI chatbot can—and cannot—do for voters
Useful as a starting point
A chatbot can translate election jargon into plain language, explain the difference between early voting and absentee voting, outline how a ballot is counted, or help you identify which government office handles an election. It can also suggest search terms and point you toward an election authority or a nonpartisan information service.

Those are low-risk, explanatory uses. If a definition is imperfect, you can usually correct it by checking an official guide. A chatbot can save time by helping you formulate the question you need to ask your election office.
Unsafe as the final source for action
Actionable election facts are different. A wrong polling-place address, registration deadline, identification rule or ballot-return date can prevent a valid vote. Rules vary by country, state or province, county, city, election type and sometimes by a voter’s status. They also change between election cycles.

The U.S. Election Assistance Commission warns that “AI-generated information may seem plausible, but it is often inaccurate.” Its guidance says that “Critical voting information, such as voting dates, hours, and locations, require a higher degree of accuracy than many AI tools can currently provide.” That is why a fluent answer should be treated as unconfirmed until the relevant election authority verifies it.
What testing has found about election answers
Independent evaluations show both improvement and serious gaps. A 2026 States United Democracy Center study tested ChatGPT and Google AI on registration, polling locations, election dates, mail voting, candidates and vote counting across rounds conducted in late 2025 and early 2026.
| Measure | ChatGPT | Google AI |
|---|---|---|
| Verifiable factual-error rate, preliminary round | 8.2% | 6.9% |
| Verifiable factual-error rate, primary round | 0% | 0% |
| Responses that mentioned a state election website | 39.4% | 55.6% |
| Gubernatorial queries with incomplete candidate lists (ChatGPT measure reported by the study) | 88.9% | Not reported |
The percentages describe those test rounds, prompts and jurisdictions; they are not a guarantee for your election. Even when the measured error rate reached zero in the primary round, researchers still found incomplete answers, weak or missing links to official sources and changes in how systems formatted their responses. A response can therefore be factually correct yet inadequate because it omits a candidate, a qualification, an exception or the official page needed to verify it.
The Brennan Center for Justice makes the broader reliability problem explicit: “Generative AI chatbots may produce different responses to the same request, and they regularly produce incorrect or hallucinated replies.” It says that, for most election-related tasks, variability that could cause an office to propagate misinformation “is not a tolerable outcome.”

An Associated Press report on a 2024 workshop reached a similar conclusion. All five tested models—GPT-4, Llama 2, Gemini, Claude and Mixtral—failed to varying degrees on basic election questions. Workshop participants rated more than half of the responses inaccurate and 40% harmful. Those results concern that workshop and its questions, not every model or every later release, but they show why confidence and polished wording are poor substitutes for verification.
Why a confident answer can still be wrong
Stale or incomplete knowledge
Most language models are not continuously updated with every change made by an election office. Anthropic says its models are not trained frequently enough to provide real-time election information and describes redirecting users to TurboVote. A model may know the rule from a previous election while missing a newly moved polling place, a changed early-voting period or a court-ordered adjustment.
Jurisdictional mismatches
Election rules are local. A question such as “When is the mail ballot due?” has no single answer without a country, state or province, county, election date and sometimes the type of ballot. A general answer can sound reasonable while applying to the wrong jurisdiction. Time zones matter too: a deadline stated as midnight local time is not the same moment everywhere.

The Brennan Center notes that a model can produce different answers to the same request. Small wording changes, a missing location or a different conversation history can alter the result. Repeating a prompt is not a verification method; it may simply produce a second plausible answer.

Incomplete lists and omitted exceptions
Candidate questions are especially vulnerable. In the States United study, ChatGPT returned incomplete candidate lists for 88.9% of gubernatorial queries. A list that names several candidates but leaves out one qualified candidate is misleading even if every name shown is correct. The same problem can affect ballot measures, party rules, identification exceptions and instructions for voters with disabilities.
Weak source handling
A chatbot may name an election website without linking the exact page, provide a broken link or cite a secondary summary. In the States United study, ChatGPT mentioned a state election website in 39.4% of responses and Google AI in 55.6%. A source mention is useful only when you open the official page and confirm that it covers your election and date.
Answers to the questions voters ask most
Can I trust a chatbot to tell me where to vote?
Use it only to find the responsible election office or to get a search phrase. Open the official state or local election website independently when possible. Confirm the polling-place street address, election date, opening and closing hours, time zone, registration status and any identification or accessibility requirements. Polling locations can change between elections, so an old answer or an old bookmark is not enough.

Do not rely on an unverified response. Registration deadlines can differ for online, postal and in-person applications, and some jurisdictions allow same-day registration while others do not. Check the election authority’s page for the exact election, note the time zone and keep proof of submission if the system provides it.

Can a chatbot tell me who is on my ballot?
It can help explain offices or direct you to a sample-ballot page, but it may omit candidates or confuse a primary, general or special election. Use the official voter-lookup or sample-ballot tool for your address. Confirm the election date, district and party-specific ballot before treating a list as complete.
Are newer chatbots reliable now?
Some measured error rates improved in the 2026 States United study, including a reported 0% verifiable-error rate for both tested systems in its primary round. That result does not establish complete, current answers for every jurisdiction. The same study documented incomplete responses, inconsistent official links and output changes. Reliability must be judged for the specific election and task, not inferred from a model’s release date or a single benchmark.
What should I ask a chatbot if I use one?
Ask it to identify the country, state or province, county, city, election type and election date it is using. Ask for the exact official election-office link, the publication or update date of that page and the model’s knowledge cutoff. Request that it separate confirmed facts from uncertainty and say when it cannot verify a detail. Treat an answer without a checkable official source as unconfirmed.
What information should never be taken on trust?
- Registration opening dates, deadlines and eligibility decisions.
- Polling-place addresses, opening hours and last-minute location changes.
- Mail-ballot application, signature, witness, postmark and receipt deadlines.
- Identification documents, residency rules and exemptions.
- Complete candidate, party and ballot-measure lists.
- Vote-counting procedures, certification dates and claims about results.
A safe, repeatable verification workflow
- Define the exact election. Write down the country, state or province, county, city, election type and date. Include your voting method—early, in person on election day or by mail.
- Ask the chatbot for orientation, not a final answer. Request the responsible election authority and the official page for your jurisdiction. Do not provide sensitive personal information such as a full government ID number.
- Open the authority’s website yourself. Use the domain shown on an official government page, voter card or prior official correspondence rather than trusting a copied link. Locate the page for the same election date.
- Match every operational detail. Compare the address, date, hours, time zone, registration status, ballot-return instructions and required documents. Check whether the page has a publication or “last updated” date.
- Resolve conflicts directly. If the chatbot and the official page disagree, follow the election authority. If the website is unclear, call the office using the telephone number listed on that official site.
- Verify before sharing. Do not repost a chatbot-generated claim as fact. Save or print the official instructions you relied on, especially for a mail ballot or a changing polling location.
A prompt that makes verification easier
A precise prompt cannot make a chatbot authoritative, but it can expose missing assumptions:
Best Value
I need information for the [country/state or province], [county/city], [election type] on [date]. Identify the official election authority, provide its exact webpage, state your knowledge cutoff, and list any details you cannot verify. Do not guess my polling place, deadline, eligibility, candidates or results.
After receiving the answer, follow the six-step workflow above. If the system supplies a source, read the source itself; do not treat the citation label as proof.
How to compare chatbot answers or tools
If you are evaluating two systems, judge the response—not the brand name—on these dimensions:
- Authority of sources: Does it identify the government election authority responsible for your jurisdiction?
- Jurisdictional specificity: Does it use your country, state or province, county, city, district and election date?
- Freshness: Does it show when its information was updated and acknowledge that rules can change?
- Completeness: Does it answer every part of the question, including exceptions, candidate lists and return requirements?
- Consistency: Do repeated prompts produce the same material facts, or do dates and locations shift?
- Transparency: Does it state uncertainty, limitations and its knowledge cutoff instead of presenting guesses as facts?
- Official linking: Does it provide a working, specific page that you can open and verify?
A tool that gets the date right but omits the official source, a required witness signature or a deadline’s time zone is not dependable enough for action.

Results, misinformation and regional differences
For election results, use the reporting and certification channels designated by your state or local election board. OpenAI says it directs U.S. users asking how or where to vote to CanIVote.org and directs election-results questions to the Associated Press, Reuters or state and local election boards. Those redirects illustrate the appropriate division of labor: a chatbot can route you, while an election authority or established results provider supplies the current record.
Concerns are not limited to the United States. The UK Electoral Commission reported that 70% of surveyed UK adults viewed political misinformation or disinformation as a problem. The survey covered 5,874 UK adults, with fieldwork from 24 January to 22 February 2024. Its chief executive, Vijay Rangarajan, said that getting information to voters during an election campaign is fundamental and that voters need reliable, trustworthy information about how to vote. The responsible authority in your country may use different terminology and procedures, so apply the same verification principle locally.
Philadelphia city commissioner Seth Bluestein summarized the practical risk in comments quoted by the Associated Press: “The chatbots are not ready for primetime when it comes to giving important, nuanced information about elections.” Until a chatbot can consistently provide complete, current, jurisdiction-specific answers with authoritative sourcing, it belongs at the beginning of your search—not at the end.
