An AI browser assistant can often use an account that is already signed in without receiving the password’s plaintext. A remote, isolated browser may keep credentials in a secure sign-in flow outside the model, while an assistant connected to your local browser profile may inherit signed-in sites, cookies, autofill and other browser state. In both cases, the agent can have enough authority to read private data or perform actions.
The practical answer depends on the browser architecture, the permissions you grant and whether a webpage can manipulate the agent with prompt injection. Treat password text and account authority as separate risks.

What “access to your password” can mean
People use “password access” to describe several different capabilities. Separating them makes the security decision clearer:
- Plaintext access: the model receives or can display the characters in your password.
- Credential submission: a browser fills or submits a password during sign-in without exposing the characters to the model.
- Session access: cookies, tokens or an already authenticated tab let the agent use an account after you have signed in.
- Account authority: the agent can read, change, send or delete information because the site trusts the current session.
An agent can lack plaintext access while retaining session access and substantial authority. For example, it might not know your banking password but could still navigate an authenticated banking tab, view balances or initiate a transfer if the site and workflow permit it. Conversely, an agent that sees a password in page text or chat has a more direct secret-exposure problem.

Which browser architecture are you using?
The browser boundary determines what data an assistant can potentially use. Before enabling an agent, identify whether it runs in a remote session, a separate desktop browser or your everyday local profile.
| Architecture | What the agent may receive or use | Password implication | Main risk |
|---|---|---|---|
| Remote isolated browser | Its own cookies, browser data and sign-ins; credentials entered through a secure form may be hidden from the model | Your device’s saved passwords are not automatically inherited | The agent still has authority in the remote signed-in session, and hostile page content can steer its actions |
| Desktop built-in browser | A separate app browser state and credentials entered in that browser | It is not your normal Chrome profile unless an extension or integration connects them | Wrong account selection, excessive website access or a mistaken sign-in |
| Local-profile extension or agent | The same signed-in sites and browser state as your profile, subject to extension permissions | Password-manager autofill or session state may be available to the integration | Credential hijacking, session misuse and cross-site data exposure |
Remote cloud browsers
OpenAI’s cloud-browser documentation describes a browser separate from the browser on your device. It keeps its own cookies, browser data and signed-in sessions; it does not use your personal browser’s open tabs, browsing history, saved passwords, cookies, extensions or existing sign-ins. Credentials entered through the secure form go directly to the remote browser. The username and password entered there are not visible to the model, and ChatGPT does not store those sign-in credentials.

Once you sign in remotely, the agent can operate within that remote session. A malicious page can still attempt to influence the agent, and anything the agent is authorized to read or change in that session remains in scope.

Desktop built-in browsers
A desktop assistant may open a dedicated browser inside its application. OpenAI’s desktop-browser guidance says to enter credentials only in the browser, never in chat. A separate app browser normally has separate cookies and storage, but the exact boundary is product-specific. Check which account is displayed before approving a sign-in and do not assume that “inside the app” means “isolated” if an extension or integration has been granted access to your regular profile.
Extensions attached to a local profile
A Chrome extension or local agent can run beside your ordinary tabs and may be able to inspect or interact with pages according to its permissions. If it operates in the profile you use every day, it can encounter sites where you are already signed in, session cookies, autofill prompts and private page content. The assistant may not be handed a password string, but the combination of authenticated tabs and browser automation can still provide account-level authority.
Can Gemini or ChatGPT use an account without seeing the password?
Yes. Google’s Chrome security documentation says Chrome will confirm before allowing Chrome to sign in to a site through Google Password Manager and that the model does not have direct access to stored passwords. Google Support likewise states that Google Password Manager does not share your passwords with Gemini in Chrome.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesGoogle also says auto browse has access to the same sites you do, including sites where you are signed in. Those statements are not contradictory: Password Manager can mediate the secret while the browser exposes the resulting authenticated session to the assistant. A confirmation prompt is therefore a boundary around the sign-in event, not proof that everything after sign-in is private from the agent.

ChatGPT’s cloud-browser model is different from an extension running in your normal Chrome profile. The remote browser starts with its own state, and a secure credential form can keep entered credentials away from the model. If you instead authorize a local integration, its access depends on the permissions and profile it was given. Product names and safeguards change, so read the current documentation for the exact mode you are enabling.
How prompt injection can turn a page into an attack
Prompt injection is a webpage’s attempt to make an AI tool produce an unintended or harmful response. Google defines it in the context of Gemini in Chrome as an attempt to elicit an unintended or harmful response from a generative AI tool. The hostile instruction may be hidden in visible text, comments, an advertisement, an email, a document or another page element that the agent can read.
An injected instruction does not need to reveal the password itself to cause harm. It might tell the agent to copy private account data into a form, upload a local file, send a message, change a recovery address or follow a link while presenting the action as an urgent security check. If the agent is already signed in, the website may accept those actions as yours.
Recommended Free Tools
Because page content is untrusted, an agent should not treat instructions found on a site as having the same authority as your explicit request. Stop when a page asks the assistant to reveal, transmit or paste secrets, to disable a security control, or to perform an unrelated action.

What security studies show—and what they do not
Audit of Chrome assistants
A USENIX Security Symposium paper audited nine popular Chrome AI browser assistants: Sider, Monica, ChatGPT for Google, Merlin, MaxAI, Perplexity, HARPA AI, TinaMind and Copilot. The authors captured network traffic and browser storage while the assistants operated in public and private browsing contexts. The study highlights how users can unintentionally share sensitive information when assistants work on private pages.
It does not provide a representative population rate for password exposure. Its findings should inform threat modeling for extensions and private browsing, not be converted into a claim that a particular percentage of ordinary users lose passwords.
Controlled prompt-injection experiments
The Mind the Web study defines a credentials-hijack payload as requiring “Browser autofill with stored credentials, or active authenticated sessions for password reset.” In its controlled evaluation, denial-of-service and phishing payloads achieved attack success rates of 90–100% across the tested models and agents. File-exfiltration and social-media-posting payloads achieved 80–100%.
Those are controlled attack results against tested systems, not estimates of everyday consumer prevalence. They demonstrate that an agent with the right browser state can be induced to carry out damaging workflows, especially when it is allowed to follow page instructions without a human checkpoint.

How to use an AI browser assistant more safely
- Choose the least-connected architecture. Use a remote or separate browser session when the task does not require your everyday profile. Do not grant a cloud session access to your personal browser merely for convenience.
- Create a low-privilege identity. For recurring automation, use a dedicated account with only the site permissions the task needs. Avoid administrator accounts, shared corporate sessions and profiles containing unrelated personal data.
- Sign in inside the browser. Never paste a password, one-time code, recovery code or payment detail into the assistant’s chat. Use the browser’s secure sign-in form or the password manager’s own prompt.
- Require approval for consequences. Keep confirmation enabled before sign-in, purchases, messages, file uploads, password changes, permission grants and destructive data changes. Read the target site, account name and action—not just the button label.
- Watch the work as it happens. Check the visible URL, account identity, page text, requested permissions and work log. Pause the agent if it opens an unexpected domain, changes the task or asks for a secret.
- Treat every page instruction as untrusted. Text in an email, comment, advertisement or document can be attacker-controlled. Your original request outranks instructions discovered on a page, but you still need to stop and inspect an unexpected workflow.
- Clean up after the task. Sign out of remote sessions when appropriate, revoke browser-extension or auto-browse permissions you no longer need, and clear remote browser data if the product provides that control.
Separate profile, separate account or full isolation?
When a separate profile is enough
A dedicated browser profile can reduce accidental cross-site exposure when the assistant must run locally. Keep it free of personal tabs, saved payment methods and unrelated extensions, and sign in only to the sites required for the task. This limits the blast radius but does not defeat a malicious page inside that profile.
When to use a separate account
Use a low-privilege account when the work involves cloud storage, social media, support systems or business tools. A compromised session then exposes less data and has fewer capabilities than your primary account. Confirm that the account cannot reset other users’ passwords or access organization-wide resources.
When to prefer a remote session
A remote isolated browser is preferable when you do not need local files, personal cookies or your normal extensions. It prevents automatic inheritance of local saved passwords and open tabs. Remember that any credentials and data you deliberately place in the remote session become part of that session’s authority until you sign out or clear it.
What to do if you suspect an agent misused access
- Stop the task and disconnect or disable the extension or auto-browse feature.
- Review the agent’s work log, browser history and the sites or forms it visited.
- From a trusted, non-automated device or session, sign out other sessions and revoke unfamiliar browser or application access.
- Change affected passwords, starting with email and accounts that can reset other credentials. Revoke active sessions and regenerate recovery or API tokens where the service supports it.
- Check sent messages, purchases, file-sharing links, account-recovery details and security settings for unauthorized changes.
- Preserve relevant timestamps and logs if the account is managed by an employer, school or financial institution, then report the incident through that organization’s security channel.
Questions to ask before enabling an assistant
- Is this a remote browser, a separate desktop browser or an extension in my normal profile?
- Can it read existing tabs, cookies, autofill suggestions, local files or browser history?
- Does the password manager keep the password hidden from the model, and is confirmation required before autofill?
- Which actions always require my approval, and can I see the exact URL, account and payload before approval?
- How do I revoke access and clear the session when the task ends?
- What happens if a page contains instructions unrelated to my request?
There is no permanent, universal guarantee that an AI browser assistant cannot see or misuse credentials. Safeguards are product-specific and can change as local and remote browsing modes evolve. The safest default is to keep plaintext passwords out of chat, minimize the browser state you expose, use low-privilege accounts, approve consequential actions and stop at the first sign of prompt injection.
