Can AI Be Trusted for Scientific Research? A 2026 Guide to Safe, Rigorous Use

AI can be used in scientific research, but it cannot be trusted by default. Treat it as a fallible assistant for bounded, reviewable tasks—not as evidence, an accountable author, or a substitute for expert judgment. Before publication or a consequential decision, verify every claim against primary literature or original data, protect confidential information, record how the tool was used, and obtain qualified human review.

What “trust” means in scientific research

Trust in science is earned by a process, not by fluent wording. The National Institutes of Health (NIH) defines scientific rigor as the strict application of the scientific method to experimental design, methodology, analysis, interpretation, and reporting so that results are robust and unbiased. Reproducibility is a core goal. An AI response can help with parts of that process, but the response itself is not evidence.

The distinction matters because a language model generates likely text from patterns. It does not automatically know whether a paper exists, whether a method was applied correctly, whether a dataset was contaminated, or whether a conclusion follows from the uncertainty in the measurements. A polished paragraph can therefore be less reliable than a plainly written primary source.

The National Academies’ reproducibility guidance also separates reproducibility—obtaining consistent results using the same data, code, and methods—from replicability—obtaining consistent results in a new study. A trustworthy AI-assisted workflow supports both by preserving methods, data decisions, uncertainty estimates, and enough detail for another researcher to reconstruct what happened.

Where AI is useful—and where its authority stops

Good uses for bounded assistance

  • Brainstorming: Generate candidate research questions, hypotheses, controls, or search terms that a scientist then evaluates.
  • Drafting and editing: Improve grammar, structure, readability, or clarity after the author has established the scientific content.
  • Literature organization: Cluster papers, extract specified fields, or suggest keywords, provided every citation and extracted fact is checked in the original paper.
  • Coding assistance: Explain syntax, propose test cases, or draft routine code. Run the code on controlled data, inspect it line by line, and test edge cases before using its output.
  • Administrative work: Convert notes into a protocol checklist, create a data-dictionary template, or summarize a meeting for internal review.

Tasks that require heightened control

AI-generated interpretation of results, statistical advice, clinical information, safety decisions, eligibility decisions, or language that changes a paper’s scientific claim can materially affect the work. Use a domain expert to check the reasoning and retain the underlying calculations, data, and assumptions. If a tool affects how results were obtained or interpreted, the National Academies says that use should be documented with enough specificity for another researcher to reconstruct the process.

What AI cannot establish

  • That a cited article, quotation, dataset, or DOI exists.
  • That a source supports the exact proposition you want to make.
  • That an analysis is statistically valid for your design or population.
  • That missing, negative, or contradictory evidence does not exist.
  • That generated code, translations, or transformations preserve the intended meaning.
  • That a confidential input is protected by the service’s default settings.

The main failure modes to plan for

Fabricated references and quotations

Models can invent plausible titles, authors, journals, page numbers, DOIs, or quotations. NIH’s 2026 research-integrity reminder specifically warns that nonexistent AI-generated references can create integrity problems. A reference is not valid until you open the original record and confirm that it contains the cited result or wording.

Plausible errors and flawed logic

Fluent prose can hide a wrong unit conversion, an invalid causal inference, a reversed control, or a conclusion that exceeds the study design. Ask the model to show assumptions, then have a researcher independently recompute the result or inspect the code. Never treat an explanation as a substitute for a calculation.

Bias, omission, and distorted coverage

Training data and model behavior can overrepresent some languages, disciplines, populations, or viewpoints. A summary may omit a negative result, minority population, preprint warning, or competing interpretation. Build searches from multiple databases and include terms for limitations, adverse findings, and disagreement.

Plagiarism and unclear provenance

Generated wording can resemble existing text, and an assistant may blur which ideas came from a source, a researcher, or the model. Keep source notes, quote only text you have checked, attribute ideas, and run the same originality and attribution checks you would use for human-written material.

Leakage of sensitive information

Submitting data to a public or commercial chatbot can disclose information to a service outside your institution’s controls. The risk includes direct identifiers, combinations of quasi-identifiers, unpublished findings, proprietary code or sequences, patient records, and confidential peer-review or grant material.

Loss of reproducibility

A result may be impossible to reconstruct if the team did not save the model name and version, date, prompts, system instructions, settings, input data, transformations, selected outputs, and human edits. “The model suggested it” is not a reproducible method.

A controlled AI-assisted workflow

  1. Define the task and its risk. Write down whether AI is being used for language editing, search assistance, coding, analysis, interpretation, or a decision. The closer it is to data interpretation or a participant-impacting decision, the stronger the controls must be.
  2. Set an evidence rule before prompting. Decide what counts as acceptable support: an original article, registered protocol, archived dataset, instrument record, or independently rerun calculation. Do not allow model output alone to satisfy the rule.
  3. Use only approved data. Remove direct identifiers and unnecessary quasi-identifiers. Confirm that your institution, funder, consent language, and data-use agreement permit the chosen system. If they do not, keep the task offline or use an approved environment.
  4. Ask for bounded, inspectable output. Give a precise schema, require uncertainty and assumptions to be labeled, and ask the tool to separate quotations from paraphrases. Do not ask it to “write the findings” without supplying a verified evidence set.
  5. Verify at the source. Open every cited paper or dataset, check the relevant passage or table, and confirm that the population, method, date, and result match your statement. Replace unsupported claims rather than silently retaining them.
  6. Reproduce the technical work. Run generated code in a controlled environment, compare outputs with an independent implementation or known test case, inspect data transformations, and preserve versions of data, packages, and scripts.
  7. Obtain independent human review. A qualified researcher who did not generate the initial output should challenge the interpretation, search for contrary evidence, and check whether uncertainty is represented honestly.
  8. Record and disclose material use. Save the tool and version, dates, purpose, inputs, important prompts or settings, outputs used, edits, verification steps, and the person responsible for approval. Follow the current policy of the target journal, funder, and institution.

What data should never be pasted into an unapproved chatbot?

Data type Default action Reason
Personally identifiable information Do not upload; de-identify or use an approved controlled system. Identifiers and combinations of attributes can expose participants.
Consented clinical research data Do not upload to a public tool unless governance and consent explicitly allow it. Consent, data-use agreements, and institutional controls may restrict onward processing.
Unpublished results, manuscripts, or patent-sensitive findings Keep in an approved environment with access controls. Disclosure can compromise confidentiality, priority, or intellectual-property rights.
Proprietary code, sequences, or trade-secret methods Do not submit to a general service. The provider’s retention and training terms may not match your obligations.
Confidential grant or peer-review material Never upload for critique or summarization. Confidentiality is part of the review duty.

NIH’s June 23, 2023 notice prohibits reviewers from using natural-language processors, large language models, or other generative AI to analyze or formulate confidential NIH peer-review critiques. Uploading grant material can itself violate that confidentiality. This is a categorical prohibition for that context, not merely a suggestion to be cautious.

How to verify an AI-generated scientific claim

  1. Locate the primary source. Search the journal, repository, registry, or dataset owner directly rather than trusting a citation supplied by the model.
  2. Match the exact claim. Check whether the source supports the same population, intervention, comparator, outcome, timeframe, and level of certainty. A paper mentioning an association does not automatically support causation.
  3. Read methods and uncertainty. Inspect sample selection, controls, missing data, statistical model, confidence or credible intervals, and stated limitations.
  4. Check independent evidence. Compare systematic reviews, preregistered studies, replication attempts, and credible results that disagree. A single striking result is not cumulative evidence.
  5. Re-run calculations or code. Reproduce numerical claims from the underlying data where feasible. Check units, rounding, transformations, and random seeds.
  6. Ask a subject expert to challenge it. Have the reviewer look specifically for alternative explanations, domain-specific confounders, and omitted literature.
  7. Label what remains uncertain. If evidence is mixed or unavailable, state that plainly instead of converting model confidence into scientific certainty.

Disclosure, authorship, and accountability

NIH guidance says tools such as ChatGPT do not meet authorship criteria. The human authors remain responsible for accuracy, interpretation, confidentiality, and reproducibility. NIH also says that use of AI for writing, editing, literature review, or data interpretation should be fully disclosed and that researchers must check for errors, flawed logic, and plagiarism.

Disclosure should be specific enough to reproduce the material contribution. Record:

  • Tool name, model or service version, and access date.
  • The purpose of use and the stage of the workflow affected.
  • Input types, with sensitive content removed or handled under an approved protocol.
  • Important prompts, system instructions, retrieval settings, temperature or equivalent controls, and code versions.
  • Which generated text, code, classifications, or interpretations were retained.
  • Human verification, corrections, exclusions, and final approval.

The National Academies summarizes the boundary clearly: “AI tools are used to assist, not replace, scholarly review and authorship.” Its guidance on responsible conduct likewise says AI should require human review and verification rather than substitute for human judgment and expertise.

Can AI replace scientists or peer reviewers?

No. Scientific interpretation depends on accountable judgment about study design, context, uncertainty, ethics, and competing explanations. Peer review adds a confidential evaluation by a person responsible to the journal or funder. Automation can help a reviewer organize public information or check formatting, but it cannot assume the reviewer’s duty or justify exposing confidential material. NIH’s peer-review prohibition and National Academies guidance both preserve human responsibility.

How to compare possible AI research workflows

Choose a workflow by its controls, not by how convincing the interface feels. Use these questions when comparing a local tool, an institutionally approved service, or a public chatbot:

Reliability dimension Questions to ask Minimum acceptable evidence
Accuracy and citation traceability Can each claim be traced to a real primary source? Source-level verification and a record of rejected or corrected outputs.
Reproducibility Can another researcher rerun the process? Saved prompts, model/version, data, code, transformations, and decision log.
Privacy and confidentiality Does the workflow technically prevent prohibited uploads? Approved governance, access controls, retention terms, and a data-classification check.
Human oversight Who reviews consequential output before use? A named, qualified reviewer with authority to reject the result.
Transparency Can authors explain where AI changed the work? A disclosure that identifies purpose, material contribution, and verification.
Bias and coverage How will omissions and conflicting evidence be found? Multiple search strategies, independent sources, and an explicit limitation review.

Is there a single accuracy number for AI in science?

No general accuracy or prevalence figure applies across scientific fields, models, languages, tasks, and versions. Authoritative guidance from NIH and the National Academies describes qualitative risks and controls rather than one performance statistic that can certify “AI for research.” Evaluate the particular task and document its error checks instead of borrowing a number from an unrelated benchmark.

Publication-ready checklist

  • Every factual claim, number, quotation, and citation has been checked against its original source.
  • Generated code and calculations have been independently run and reviewed.
  • Contrary evidence, limitations, uncertainty, and population boundaries are visible.
  • No personal, clinical, proprietary, unpublished, grant, or peer-review data entered an unapproved system.
  • The tool, version, dates, prompts or settings, inputs, outputs used, and verification steps are archived.
  • The manuscript, application, presentation, or data-analysis methods disclose material AI use under the current policy.
  • A qualified human—not the model—made the final scientific and publication decisions.

Used this way, AI can reduce mechanical work and help researchers explore ideas without lowering the standard of evidence. Trust belongs to the documented, verified workflow and the people accountable for it—not to the generated answer.
