1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteYes, but only within boundaries set by the product, connected accounts, tools and approval rules. Modern AI agents can pursue a goal, choose several tool calls and complete work such as browsing, research, file editing, scheduling and workflow updates. Spending money is possible in selected commerce flows, but a purchase normally stops for your confirmation. The merchant, payment processor and platform still control authorization, charging, fulfillment and returns.
Think of an agent as delegated software, not an independent person with unlimited authority. Its real power comes from the permissions and limits around it: which websites it may visit, which files or accounts it can access, what spending ceiling applies, and which actions require you to take over.

What “autonomous” means for an AI assistant
A conventional assistant answers a question or performs one operation after a prompt. An agent receives a goal, makes a plan, selects tools and keeps working through several steps with less human input. Anthropic’s August 4, 2025 framework describes agents in those terms and gives examples such as researching wedding vendors, comparing prices and availability, building a timeline and budget, searching connected files, extracting metrics and producing a report. Its connector controls let a user allow or prevent access to particular tools and processes. Read the Anthropic framework for that model of scoped autonomy.

Microsoft’s Copilot Tasks documentation similarly says you can describe a goal and Copilot will plan and execute the required steps. Listed uses include research, content creation, scheduling and workflow management. Microsoft warns that Tasks can make mistakes, be deceived by hidden instructions and require user input or oversight; the Copilot Tasks guidance explains those limits.

What an agent can decide
Within its permissions, an agent may decide which search to run, which page to open, how to organize information, or which sequence of tools is most likely to reach the goal. It does not acquire authority merely by being able to reason. The account session, connector settings, platform policy and deterministic controls define what it may actually do.
What remains outside its authority
A product can block categories of action regardless of the model’s suggestion. Microsoft’s security guidance recommends deterministic rules that prohibit an action even when model output requests it, least privilege and least action, approval for high-risk or irreversible operations, and dependable pause and stop controls. Those controls are described in Microsoft’s agent-risk guidance.
Can an AI assistant buy something for you?
In limited, product-specific flows, yes. OpenAI announced Instant Checkout on September 29, 2025. The announcement said ChatGPT Free, Plus and Pro users in the United States could buy from U.S. Etsy sellers in chat, with additional Shopify merchants planned. Availability depends on the user’s country, plan, the participating merchant and the rollout at that time.
The checkout does not silently turn a conversation into a charge. You review and confirm the order, shipping details and payment details before the purchase is submitted. OpenAI’s announcement states: “Users stay in control — they explicitly confirm each step before any action is taken.” It also says payment tokens are authorized for specific amounts and merchants with the user’s permission. See the Instant Checkout announcement for the stated flow.
Who actually charges the card?
The chat interface can collect the information needed to assemble a cart, but it is not necessarily the payment processor or seller. OpenAI’s commerce documentation divides the responsibilities this way:

- ChatGPT collects buyer, fulfillment and payment information and calls the merchant’s checkout endpoints.
- The merchant validates the cart, calculates tax and shipping, evaluates risk, and accepts or declines the order.
- The merchant charges through its existing payment processor and remains responsible for fulfillment, returns and customer support.
Payment therefore occurs on the merchant’s systems even when the checkout screen is inside the chat interface. The technical description is in OpenAI’s Agentic Commerce concepts.
What a browser agent can do
OpenAI’s Operator system card describes a browser agent searching for shoes, navigating to checkout and completing a purchase on a user’s behalf. Safeguards require human oversight and explicit confirmation for risky actions. Some actions, including buying or selling stocks in that example, may be fully restricted. A wrong-product purchase is given as a model-error example, which is why reaching a checkout page is not the same as having permission to submit an order. The details are in the Operator system card.

Approval boundaries vary by product, but monetary and externally consequential actions are commonly treated as checkpoints rather than ordinary tool calls.
Payments, personal data and messages
Microsoft says Copilot asks for approval or hands control back before monetary transactions, submitting personal information to external websites, or actions involving other people. Its guidance tells users to confirm purchase and payment details before completing a transaction. An agent may prepare a cart or draft a message, but the final submission can still require you.
The ChatGPT agent system card says the agent pauses for confirmation before actions that change the state of the world, such as completing a purchase or sending an email. In a relevant-action evaluation, OpenAI reported 91.0% confirmation recall (OpenAI, 2025). OpenAI also notes limitations that make this figure an underestimate of the true rate, so it is a vendor evaluation result under specified conditions, not a promise that every future action will be handled perfectly. The evaluation is documented in the ChatGPT agent system card.

Spending ceilings and delegated approval
Protocols can encode approval instead of relying only on a conversational prompt. Google’s Agent Payments Protocol (AP2) guide describes two linked objects:
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →- An IntentMandate identifies approved merchants and an automatic-approval spending limit.
- A PaymentMandate is bound to a particular cart and amount.
If the order exceeds the configured limit, the mandate remains unsigned until a manager or user explicitly approves it. Google describes AP2 as adding “typed mandates that provide non-repudiatable proof of intent and enforce configurable guardrails on every transaction.” The full explanation is in the Google Developers guide to AI agent protocols.
How agentic payment systems are designed
Different systems can place the financial control at different points. When comparing an assistant or an agent platform, identify which of these mechanisms it uses:
| Payment mechanism | Where control sits | What you should verify |
|---|---|---|
| Merchant checkout | The merchant validates the cart, computes tax and shipping, applies risk rules and charges its processor. | Merchant identity, final total, return terms and the exact item or quantity. |
| Delegated payment token | A token is authorized for a specified merchant and amount rather than exposing unrestricted card authority. | Amount, expiration, merchant binding and whether the token can be reused. |
| Mandate-based payment | An intent and a cart-specific payment mandate encode limits and approval status. | Approved merchants, spending ceiling and what event triggers a new approval. |
| Card-on-file automation | The connected account may submit a saved payment method through an approved site. | Site restrictions, recurring-charge terms and a reliable confirmation or stop step. |
| User takeover | You resume control in the browser or app for login, payment or another sensitive action. | That the agent cannot continue until you deliberately hand control back. |
OpenAI’s Agentic Commerce Protocol and Google AP2 address the need for structured checkout data, delegated authorization, merchant constraints, spending limits and auditability. The protocol does not eliminate merchant risk checks or consumer responsibility; it makes the intended limits machine-readable and easier to enforce.
What tasks can assistants run without constant prompting?
Autonomy is usually practical when the task is reversible, the inputs are well defined and no protected information or money is being sent. Typical examples include:

Misunderstanding the goal
An agent may select the wrong product, variant, size, quantity, delivery address or date. OpenAI’s Operator materials use a wrong-product purchase as an example. A natural-language request such as “get the cheapest one” can also omit requirements about quality, compatibility, warranty or delivery time.
Prompt injection and deceptive instructions
A page, document or email can contain hidden instructions aimed at the agent rather than at you. Microsoft warns that Copilot may be mistaken or deceived by malicious hidden instructions and advises stopping a task if it visits unexpected sites or files. Treat content discovered by the agent as untrusted input, not as a new permission.
Data disclosure
Submitting a phone number, address, identification document or account detail to an external site is a consequential action. Confirm the destination, the fields being sent and whether the information is necessary. Connector permissions should expose only the files and services needed for the job.
Unexpected or duplicate charges
Taxes, shipping, substitutions, quantity changes, recurring billing and currency conversion can alter the amount you expected. A retry can also create a duplicate order if the first request succeeded but the interface timed out. Inspect the final cart and transaction status before authorizing again.
Best Value
Irreversible or prohibited activity
Some actions cannot be safely delegated, such as fraudulent or unauthorized payments, bypassing website restrictions or transactions that policy forbids. Google Cloud’s agentic-AI use guidelines prohibit fraudulent and unauthorized financial transactions and bypassing website restrictions. Platform policy and technical controls can therefore be stricter than the user’s instruction.
How to let an agent work safely
- Define the outcome precisely. Specify product identifiers, acceptable substitutes, maximum total cost, delivery deadline and destination. Avoid vague instructions when money or external communication is involved.
- Grant the smallest useful permission. Connect only the required calendar, folder, site or payment method. Prefer read access when the task does not need editing, and limit the agent to approved domains or merchants.
- Set deterministic limits. Use a spending ceiling, merchant allow-list, quantity cap, time window and prohibition on recurring charges where the system supports them.
- Inspect the plan before execution. Check the proposed steps, sources, destination sites and data fields. Stop if the agent reaches an unexpected file, domain or login page.
- Review the final state. Before confirmation, verify seller, item, variant, quantity, subtotal, tax, shipping, total, currency, delivery address and return terms.
- Keep a takeover path. Use pause, stop or browser handoff controls for login, payment, messages and other high-impact actions. Do not grant unattended access if you cannot revoke it quickly.
- Audit afterward. Check the order confirmation, account activity, sent messages and payment statement. Revoke temporary tokens or connectors that are no longer needed.
How to compare two AI assistants
Marketing labels such as “agent” do not tell you how much autonomy a product really has. Compare the implementation on these dimensions:
| Comparison axis | Questions to ask |
|---|---|
| Action scope | Can it browse, edit files, send email, change a calendar, run code, shop or access financial accounts? |
| Approval boundary | Which actions always pause for confirmation? Can you set amount, merchant, domain or recipient limits? |
| Payment architecture | Does checkout stay with the merchant, use a delegated token or mandate, or require you to take over? |
| Visibility and control | Do you see the plan, tool calls, screenshots, activity log and final total? Can you pause or stop immediately? |
| Security posture | Are least-privilege permissions, prompt-injection defenses, site restrictions and data minimization available? |
| Availability | Is the feature enabled for your country, plan, account type and the merchant or connector you need? |
Two assistants may both claim to “book travel” while one only researches options and the other can enter traveler details but still requires confirmation. The approval boundary and payment architecture matter more than the label.
Why availability changes
Agentic purchasing is not a universal capability. Product rollout, subscription tier, geography, merchant participation, account permissions and policy restrictions can all change whether a button appears or whether the agent is allowed to finish. OpenAI’s Instant Checkout announcement, for example, specified U.S. users and participating sellers rather than every ChatGPT user worldwide. A connector may also be disabled by an administrator even when the underlying model can perform the task.
Before relying on an agent for a deadline, run a small, reversible test: ask it to research or assemble a cart without submitting anything, verify the approval prompt and confirm that you can stop it. Treat any stated feature as conditional on the current product documentation and your account’s actual controls.
