Yes—but only if the laptop stays awake, the encoder keeps sending video to YouTube, and the network remains connected. Closing the lid does not itself keep a stream running: many laptops sleep when the lid closes, which can stop the encoder feed.
What has to keep working
A YouTube encoder livestream depends on the encoder sending a valid feed to YouTube through the stream URL and stream key. If the computer sleeps or the encoder stops sending, the stream can end even if the YouTube watch page is still open. A looping video in a browser is not the same as an encoder livestream; the encoder must send the video feed. See YouTube’s encoder workflow.

- The laptop stays awake: closing the lid must not trigger sleep or hibernation.
- The encoder stays active: it must remain connected and send video using the correct YouTube stream URL and key.
- Power and network remain available: a laptop running on battery can run out of charge, and a lost connection can interrupt the feed.
Keep a Windows laptop awake when its lid closes
On Windows 10 or Windows 11, Microsoft documents this route to change the lid action:

- Select Choose what closing the lid does.
- For When I close the lid, set the Plugged in action to an option that keeps the PC awake, if your device offers one.
- Review the On battery action separately. For a long stream, use reliable power rather than depending on battery charge.
- Save the change, start a private or unlisted test if appropriate, close the lid, and check that both the encoder and YouTube stream continue working.
Available actions can vary with the PC and its manufacturer. Microsoft notes that many laptops sleep when their lids close; consult its power and sleep guidance if your settings differ.

Use a Mac with its display closed
Apple’s guidance describes closed-display use with an external display, mouse, and keyboard. Apple silicon Macs may ask you to authorize connected accessories. Requirements can vary by model and macOS version, so check Apple’s instructions for your exact Mac rather than assuming every laptop supports the same setup.
- Check the Apple support page for your Mac model and macOS version.
- Connect the external display and the required keyboard and mouse or trackpad; connect power where the model’s instructions require it.
- Authorize accessories if prompted, then confirm the Mac remains awake with its lid closed.
- Run the encoder and test the actual closed-lid setup before relying on it for a scheduled stream.
Apple’s accessory and closed-display guidance explains the general setup. Its M3 MacBook display guidance gives conditions for that specific workflow; do not generalize those model-specific requirements to every Mac.

Test before leaving the stream unattended
Test the whole arrangement with the lid shut—not just the laptop while open. YouTube recommends testing and monitoring stream health. Its live-streaming tips include checking the preview, confirming the local archive grows, verifying that the event is accessible from channel and watch pages and on mobile, and monitoring audio and video quality. YouTube also advises continuously monitoring stream quality.

- Verify that viewers can access the event from the intended watch page.
- Check that a local recording is being created if you have enabled one.
- Watch the setup long enough to catch sleep, power, heat, or network problems before depending on it.
YouTube says a wired connection may help compared with Wi-Fi. Ethernet can reduce reliance on wireless, but it does not prevent the laptop from sleeping and does not guarantee uninterrupted streaming. YouTube’s system guidance covers connection considerations.

YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived, but that is platform guidance—not a guarantee that a laptop, encoder, or network will remain reliable for that duration. For scheduled events, YouTube advises setting up encoders at least two hours beforehand and starting them at least 15 minutes before the scheduled start; those timings are operational guidance, not a reliability promise. If a lid-closed stream stops: causes and fixes

When a laptop is not the right way to keep the stream running
A laptop setup requires the computer, encoder, power, and connection to stay operational. If your lid behavior, Mac accessory requirements, or ability to monitor the machine makes that unsuitable, alternatives include a supported software or hardware encoder, a cloud encoder, or a cloud service that plays uploaded video to YouTube. YouTube lists encoder categories and examples, but those examples are not comparative performance endorsements. Its encoder overview and hardware encoder examples can help you identify options. The available official guidance does not establish a head-to-head reliability winner among these approaches.
