For a 720p, 30 fps YouTube live stream encoded with H.264, start at 5,000 kbps for video. That is a practical starting point within YouTube’s published 3–8 Mbps recommended range for 720p30—not a special bitrate for bhajans or 24/7 broadcasts. Use CBR, a two-second keyframe interval, and configure audio separately. Then test the complete setup on the connection and encoder that will carry the stream.
Recommended starting settings for 720p bhajans
These settings assume 720p at 30 fps, H.264 video, and stereo audio. YouTube’s current guidance, retrieved October 3, 2026, lists 3 Mbps as the minimum and 8 Mbps as the recommended video bitrate for 720p30 H.264 live ingestion. The 5 Mbps starting point is an editorial choice within that range; YouTube does not prescribe a bitrate by music genre or broadcast duration.

| Setting | Starting value | Basis |
|---|---|---|
| Resolution and frame rate | 1280×720 at 30 fps | Applies to the 720p30 recommendation; confirm the frame rate of your actual stream. |
| Video codec | H.264 | YouTube’s cited bitrate range is for H.264 live ingestion. |
| Video bitrate | 5,000 kbps | Practical starting target within YouTube’s 3–8 Mbps recommended range; not a genre-specific official setting. |
| Rate control | CBR | YouTube recommends constant bitrate for live encoder settings. |
| Keyframe interval | 2 seconds | YouTube recommends two seconds and says not to exceed four. |
| Stereo audio | 128 kbps; 44.1 kHz sample rate | YouTube’s recommended stereo audio bitrate and sample rate. AAC or MP3 are listed audio codecs. |
| Ingest protocol | RTMP or RTMPS | Both are listed by YouTube for live ingest. |

How to choose between 3, 5, and 8 Mbps
Keep codec, resolution, and frame rate fixed while comparing bitrate choices. A still devotional image with limited motion may not need the same data rate as footage with camera movement, performers, or detailed backgrounds. Genre alone does not determine the correct bitrate: image detail and motion, encoder behavior, and the stability of the upload connection all matter.

- Try 3 Mbps if a lower data rate is needed to protect connection headroom. It is YouTube’s stated minimum for 720p H.264 in both the 30 fps and 60 fps rows.
- Start at 5 Mbps for a balanced initial test at 720p30. This is an informed starting choice, not a YouTube-prescribed bhajan setting.
- Test up to 8 Mbps if the picture benefits from more detail and your sustained connection can carry it reliably. YouTube lists 8 Mbps as recommended for 720p H.264 at 30 fps and also at 60 fps.
Do not treat the 720p30 and 720p60 cases as interchangeable simply because YouTube lists the same bitrate bounds. Set the actual frame rate first, then verify the encoder is sending it as intended.
Set the FFmpeg values carefully
For an encoder targeting 5 Mbps video at 30 fps, the relevant illustrative values are -b:v 5000k and a GOP size of 60 frames. At 30 frames per second, 60 frames correspond to a two-second keyframe interval.

- Operating System: Windows 11 Pro (64-bit)
These values alone are not a complete, tested FFmpeg command. FFmpeg rate control varies with the selected encoder and its options; a bitrate flag by itself does not guarantee YouTube-style CBR. Consult the documentation for your chosen encoder and confirm the outgoing stream’s bitrate, frame rate, codec, audio, and keyframe spacing before using it for a continuous broadcast.

YouTube lists H.264 for video, AAC or MP3 for audio, and RTMP or RTMPS for ingest. Add audio bitrate to the video requirement when estimating total upload capacity: the recommended 128 kbps stereo audio stream is in addition to video, along with protocol and other overhead. Leave practical headroom rather than choosing a nominal upload speed that barely matches the stream target.

Test connection stability and stream health
- Configure the encoder for the intended broadcast. Use the same resolution, frame rate, video and audio codecs, bitrate, and ingest route you plan to run.
- Test representative content. YouTube advises testing with audio and movement similar to the real stream. Include the bhajan audio and any visual motion or changes expected during the broadcast.
- Check the actual outgoing stream. Verify that the encoder is applying the chosen rate control and two-second keyframe interval; do not assume the illustrative FFmpeg values work identically with every encoder.
- Watch stream health while testing. If the stream is unstable, lower the video bitrate within the published range and retest on the real sustained connection. A bitrate within YouTube’s range is not a guarantee of uninterrupted streaming.
- Run a long enough trial to expose operational problems. Check that the computer, encoder, network, and source media continue working over the period you need. YouTube’s published guidance does not establish a special bitrate for a 24-hour stream or report controlled tests of bhajan material.
YouTube’s encoder guidance says: “Make sure to test before you start your live stream. Tests should include audio and movement in the video similar to what you’ll be doing in the stream.” See YouTube Help’s encoder settings for the live-ingest recommendations.
Protect the music and recording rights
A bitrate setting does not grant permission to broadcast a bhajan. Make sure you have the necessary rights for both the musical composition and the particular recording, including any third-party performance or backing track. A traditional devotional song may still be protected in a specific arrangement or recording. YouTube’s live settings documentation includes rights-management controls, but that does not establish that any particular recording is cleared for your use.

Review YouTube’s live settings and encoder guidance, including the available rights-management settings. If you do not control or have permission for the relevant rights, do not assume that changing the audio, bitrate, or stream format makes the broadcast permissible.
Troubleshoot common bitrate and streaming problems
- Stream health is poor or the connection drops: The sustained upload connection may not reliably support the total stream data rate. Lower video bitrate within YouTube’s range, account for audio and overhead, and test again.
- Picture quality is not acceptable at 5 Mbps: Compare 3, 5, and 8 Mbps with the same source, resolution, frame rate, and encoder. If 8 Mbps improves the picture, use it only if the connection can sustain it reliably.
- YouTube reports keyframe or encoder issues: Check that keyframes are two seconds apart and never more than four seconds apart. At 30 fps, a GOP of 60 frames represents two seconds; ensure the selected encoder interprets its settings as expected.
- Audio is missing, distorted, or out of sync: Inspect the audio codec, sample rate, channel configuration, and bitrate separately from video. YouTube lists AAC or MP3 and recommends 128 kbps stereo at 44.1 kHz.
- The stream does not match the intended frame rate: Confirm both the source and the encoder output. The published 720p30 and 720p60 cases have the same bitrate bounds, but they describe distinct stream configurations.
- A stream is interrupted despite using a recommended bitrate: A published bitrate recommendation cannot ensure continuous operation. Check encoder stability, the network, the ingest connection, and source playback; monitor stream health during the broadcast.
Or let it run in the cloud
If you want a YouTube channel to keep playing uploaded bhajan videos without leaving a home computer on, StreamNeo runs the loop from the cloud. Upload the video or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. It plays uploaded videos; it does not broadcast from a camera.
