Can a YouTube Channel With Zero Subscribers Stream Prerecorded Video Using an Encoder?

A zero-subscriber YouTube channel can stream prerecorded video with a computer encoder if it meets YouTube’s general live-stream eligibility requirements. Follow the OBS setup steps and keep mobile streaming rules separate.

Yes. A YouTube channel with zero subscribers can stream prerecorded video from a computer using an encoder, provided it meets YouTube’s general live-streaming requirements. Those include channel verification and no live-stream restrictions in the previous 90 days. YouTube does not list a subscriber minimum for computer encoder streaming; mobile live streaming has separate eligibility rules.

What you need before you start

  • A YouTube channel that is verified and has had no live-stream restrictions in the past 90 days.
  • A person who is at least 16 years old to live stream.
  • An encoder such as OBS Studio, a prerecorded video file, and the stream URL and key from YouTube Studio.
  • Permission to use all video, music, and other material in the broadcast, and compliance with YouTube’s Community Guidelines and Terms of Service.

YouTube says first-time live-stream activation may take up to 24 hours, so enable the feature ahead of your planned broadcast. See YouTube’s live-streaming eligibility guidance.

Stream a prerecorded video with OBS

  1. Enable live streaming. In YouTube Studio, follow the live-stream setup prompts. Verify the channel if needed, then allow up to 24 hours for first-time activation.
  2. Create a stream in YouTube Studio. Open the Live Control Room and create or schedule a stream. Copy its YouTube Live server URL and stream key.
  3. Connect OBS. In OBS, open Settings > Stream, select YouTube if available, and enter the stream key. If using a custom server connection, enter YouTube’s server URL and key in the matching fields. Keep the key private: anyone who has it may be able to send video to your stream.
  4. Add the video file. In the OBS scene you plan to broadcast, select Sources > + > Media Source, create a source, and choose the prerecorded file. OBS supports common formats including MP4, MOV, MKV, AVI, and WebM. Select Loop if the video should restart automatically when it ends; otherwise playback ends when the file finishes. See the OBS Media Sources documentation.
  5. Check the picture and sound. Confirm the video fits the output canvas, audio is audible and not clipping, and the intended scene is selected. If you want a single playback rather than a loop, leave Loop off.
  6. Start the encoder and preview. Click Start Streaming in OBS. Check the incoming feed in YouTube’s Live Control Room before starting the broadcast there. Once the preview looks right, select Go Live if the stream is not already scheduled to begin automatically.
  7. End the broadcast cleanly. End the live stream in YouTube Studio, then stop streaming in OBS. Follow YouTube’s encoder setup instructions for the current Live Control Room workflow: Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder.

Encoder streaming is not the same as mobile streaming

This answer applies to a computer encoder, such as OBS, or a standalone hardware encoder. YouTube treats streaming from the mobile app as a separate method with its own requirements. Zero subscribers not being a listed barrier for encoder streaming does not mean a zero-subscriber channel can use the mobile app to go live.

Copyright and presentation responsibilities

A prerecorded file still becomes the content of a live broadcast. Do not describe it as footage being captured live or imply it includes live production elements if it does not. You remain responsible for having the rights to the video and audio, and for following YouTube policies. Copyright or other policy issues can lead to live-stream restrictions; see YouTube’s guidance on avoiding live-stream restrictions.

Common problems and fixes

  • You cannot start a live stream: Check channel verification and whether a restriction has applied in the past 90 days. If this is the first activation, allow up to 24 hours.
  • YouTube does not receive the encoder feed: Confirm OBS is streaming, and recheck the server URL and stream key in the Live Control Room against the values entered in OBS. Do not share the key publicly.
  • The file plays only once: Edit the Media Source properties and enable Loop if playback should restart when it reaches the end.
  • The preview is blank or has no sound: Confirm the correct Media Source is in the active OBS scene, the file is available at its selected location, and the source and desktop audio levels are not muted.
  • The stream is stopped or restricted: Review YouTube’s notices and policy guidance. A working encoder setup does not override channel eligibility, copyright rules, or Community Guidelines.
