Back up the whole launch path—not just the FFmpeg command: the script, its configuration and environment files, the service or scheduler that starts it, and an inventory of the inputs and software version it needs. Keep a copy off the VPS, protect stream keys as credentials, and test a restore before relying on it. YouTube’s backup ingestion address is a second destination for a live feed; it does not back up your server files.
What to back up—and what not to confuse it with
A recoverable FFmpeg setup includes the files and settings needed to start the stream again, plus enough operational notes to find and restore them. Paths differ by administrator and operating system, so inventory the actual launch setup rather than assuming a standard location.

- Launch command and scripts: the shell script or exact command, along with any shell files it sources.
- Referenced configuration: FFmpeg preset or config files, non-secret settings, playlist files, and any overlay assets required at startup.
- Credentials: stream keys and any credential-bearing ingestion URLs, handled separately and securely.
- Startup mechanism: the service-manager unit, timer, cron entry, or other scheduler that launches and restarts FFmpeg.
- Recovery inventory: installed FFmpeg version, working directory, input files or URLs, relevant permissions, and the restart procedure.
Do not assume you need to back up source media or transient state. Include bulky media only if it is necessary to resume the service and is not available elsewhere.

Find the complete launch path
- Locate the exact command or script used to start FFmpeg. If a service or scheduler launches it, inspect that definition to find the command, working directory, and any referenced environment files.
- Trace the script’s dependencies: sourced shell files, presets, config files, playlists, overlays, and input locations or URLs.
- Record the installed FFmpeg version and how the process is started, stopped, and restarted. Include relevant file permissions and the service’s references to paths.
- Make an explicit list of the files and settings to preserve. Review it against the actual startup chain before backing it up.
FFmpeg’s command-line option order matters: options normally apply to the next input or output. Default stream selection can also depend on properties such as resolution or audio channel count. After restoration, verify the command and stream mapping against the restored inputs rather than assuming a saved command will behave identically in a changed environment. Separate secrets from ordinary settings
Treat YouTube stream keys as passwords. Do not put them in a public code repository, an unprotected backup, or logs. YouTube’s HLS setup guide notes that the backup server URL may already contain the stream key, so a copied ingestion URL can itself be a credential.

Keep ordinary settings and secret values distinct where practical. If a secret must be recoverable from backup, store it only in an access-restricted, encrypted backup and document how an authorized operator can retrieve it. Preserve the backup repository password or access method securely and separately from the VPS; without it, a repository may not be recoverable.

Choose an independent backup destination
Keep at least one repository independent of the VPS. A backup stored only on the server does not protect against loss of that server. Restic 0.19.1 documents local and remote repositories, repository preparation, and password-based access. Its documentation covers preparing a repository and backing up files.

Select a destination and access controls appropriate to your environment; no particular provider or storage plan is required by this workflow. Before scheduling backups, identify the exact source paths and review the included file list. Restic warns that exclusion patterns do not filter an exact path explicitly supplied as a backup source, so do not rely on exclusions to remove a secret or bulky file that you directly name as a source.
Schedule the backup only after reviewing its scope
- Initialize the repository using the installed backup tool’s current instructions, and securely record the information needed to access it.
- Define the explicit paths containing the launch files and required configuration. Keep secrets in an appropriately protected source and destination.
- Run a dry run or equivalent preview and inspect which files would be included. Check exclusion rules against the explicit sources.
- Automate the reviewed backup using the scheduler appropriate to your VPS. Choose an interval and retention policy that fit your change rate and recovery needs; neither is universal.
- Check the backup tool’s repository-health guidance, then test a restore to a separate temporary directory. A successful scheduled run alone does not prove that recovery works.
Restic’s restore documentation describes restoring repository contents. Keep the test target separate from the live configuration so a verification run cannot overwrite files the running service depends on.

Restore and validate the stream
- On the replacement or repaired VPS, retrieve the backup repository credentials through the documented authorized recovery method.
- Restore selected files to a temporary target first. Check that scripts, configuration, service definitions, and referenced paths are present, and verify permissions and ownership before placing files into service locations.
- Confirm the installed FFmpeg version and inspect the command for option placement, input/output order, and stream mapping. Compare the inputs available on the rebuilt server with those recorded in the inventory.
- Restore credentials through the restricted process; avoid printing stream keys or credential-bearing URLs to logs or terminals that may be retained or shared.
- Start or restart the service using its documented mechanism. Check YouTube Live Control Room and stream health; a locally running FFmpeg process does not by itself confirm that YouTube is receiving a healthy stream. The LiveStreams API exposes stream status and health status.
Keep HLS requirements separate from RTMP settings
Do not apply YouTube’s HLS-specific requirements to an RTMP workflow. For HLS, YouTube specifies an HTTPS ingest URL, segment-based delivery, TS segments of 1–4 seconds, rolling playlists with no more than five outstanding segments, and HTTPS POST/PUT. Its guide lists HEVC as an additional video codec option and AAC, AC3, and EAC3 audio codecs. The guide says the HLS URL should start with “https” rather than “rtmp.” Consult YouTube’s HLS setup guide for the protocol-specific setup details.

- The script was restored, but the service will not start: check the service or scheduler definition, working directory, referenced environment/config files, and permissions. Backing up only the launch script can miss these dependencies.
- The backup repository is present but cannot be opened: verify that the authorized operator has the correct repository password or access method. Keep recovery access information separate from the VPS.
- A secret was included unexpectedly: review explicit backup source paths as well as exclusions. If a stream key or credential-bearing URL was exposed, treat it as compromised and take appropriate credential-protection steps.
- FFmpeg starts but YouTube does not show a healthy stream: inspect YouTube’s stream health, then check the destination URL, credentials, option ordering, stream mapping, and available inputs. A running process is not proof of successful delivery.
- The restored command behaves differently: confirm the FFmpeg version, input files, option placement, and selected streams. Differences in inputs or defaults can change output behavior.
