Create a plain-text playlist with one file line per video, arrange those lines in the desired filename order, then pass the playlist to FFmpeg.
1. Put the videos in the order you want
For predictable filename order, use names with zero-padded numbers, such as clip-001.mp4, clip-002.mp4, and clip-010.mp4. Ordinary alphabetical comparison may put clip-10.mp4 before clip-2.mp4. The concat demuxer follows the playlist, not a directory’s unspecified enumeration order, so inspect the list before streaming.

2. Create the concat playlist
Save a plain-text file named playlist.txt alongside the clips, with one entry per video in playback order:

file 'clip-010.mp4'The ffconcat version 1.0 header is optional. If included for automatic format recognition, it must be exactly the first line, with no leading spaces or byte-order mark. Paths containing spaces or special characters need proper quoting or escaping; use paths that FFmpeg can resolve from its working directory. See the FFmpeg concat demuxer documentation.

3. Send the playlist to YouTube Live

In YouTube Live Control Room, create or select the intended stream and copy its server URL and stream key. Treat the key as a password; do not publish it or include it in a shared script. YouTube’s encoder setup instructions explain where to obtain and enter these values.

Run FFmpeg with the playlist as input and YouTube’s supplied destination:
ffmpeg -re -f concat -safe 0 -i playlist.txt -c copy -f flv 'YOUTUBE_INGEST_URL/YOUR_STREAM_KEY' -
Replace the destination placeholder with the URL and key provided for your stream, using the protocol and output format appropriate to that ingest setup. This command is a pattern, not a universal guarantee: check your FFmpeg build and YouTube’s current ingest guidance before relying on it.

Watch the YouTube preview and confirm that clips appear in the intended order and that audio and video play correctly before sharing the live stream.
-re reads file input at its native rate rather than sending it as fast as possible. -c copy avoids re-encoding, but only works reliably when the clips meet the concat demuxer’s compatibility requirements.
4. Check clip compatibility before using stream copy
The concat demuxer expects the files to have the same streams, including codecs and time bases. It joins their packets and adjusts timestamps; differences in duration or inaccurate duration metadata—for example, in a truncated file—can cause gaps or artifacts. FFmpeg’s documentation describes the requirements and the duration directive, which can override a file’s stored duration when necessary.

There is no single dependable transcoding command for every setup: the clips, FFmpeg build, operating system, and target output are unspecified. Inspect the inputs, choose consistent video and audio settings, and confirm that the resulting output suits YouTube’s current recommendations.
5. Match YouTube’s current ingest recommendations
YouTube currently recommends RTMP or RTMPS ingest; video using H.264, H.265 (HEVC), or AV1; audio using AAC or MP3; constant bitrate encoding; and a keyframe interval of 2 seconds that should not exceed 4 seconds. RTMPS is the encrypted extension of RTMP. Recommended bitrates vary by codec, resolution, and frame rate, so there is no single bitrate to apply to every stream. Consult YouTube’s live encoder settings for the applicable combination and recheck them when setting up a stream.
When input layouts vary, do not assume FFmpeg’s stream mapping or stream-copy options select the correct output automatically. The FFmpeg stream mapping documentation explains how mapping controls which input streams are sent and the order of output streams.

6. Troubleshoot ordering and playback problems

Clips play in the wrong order: check the order of the
filedirectives. Rebuild and inspect the playlist rather than relying on a folder listing. Zero-pad number sequences to make ordinary alphabetical order match the intended numeric order. -
FFmpeg cannot open a clip: check that each path is valid relative to the working directory, and that spaces or special characters are quoted or escaped correctly.

Stream copy fails or playback is inconsistent: compare the clips’ streams, codecs, and time bases. If they do not match, use a consistent transcode profile instead of assuming
-c copywill resolve the mismatch. -
There are gaps or timestamp artifacts: check for different clip lengths and inaccurate stored duration, including truncated files. FFmpeg’s concat demuxer supports a
durationdirective to override a file’s stored duration where needed. -
YouTube does not receive a usable feed: verify the server URL and stream key in Live Control Room, the destination protocol and output format, and the encoder settings for the chosen codec, resolution, and frame rate.
