Yes. A channel with 50 subscribers can stream a prerecorded video from a computer using a live-stream encoder, as long as live streaming is enabled, the channel is verified, and it has no live-streaming restriction in the previous 90 days. YouTube’s 50-subscriber threshold applies to mobile live streaming, not its stated computer encoder requirements. First-time activation can take up to 24 hours.
Why the 50-subscriber rule does not block computer streaming
YouTube lists a minimum of 50 subscribers among its requirements for mobile live streaming. That threshold should not be confused with computer streaming: YouTube’s computer guidance covers webcam and encoder workflows without stating a subscriber minimum. For live streaming generally, YouTube says the channel must be verified and have had no live-streaming restriction in the preceding 90 days.

The channel’s individual eligibility status is not established by the general guidance. Check it in YouTube Studio before preparing a stream. If this is the first time enabling live streaming, activation may take up to 24 hours.

- A verified YouTube channel with live streaming enabled and no live-streaming restriction in the past 90 days.
- A computer and a software encoder capable of sending the video to YouTube. YouTube describes encoder apps as software that runs on a computer; a specialized hardware encoder is optional, not a basic requirement.
- The stream URL and stream key from YouTube Studio, unless your encoder offers a direct YouTube connection.
- A video and audio track you own or have permission to use in a live stream.
You do not need a webcam, microphone, capture card, or expensive standalone encoder just to send a prerecorded file. YouTube’s guidance says expensive equipment is not necessary, and a computer software encoder can handle the connection.

Set up the stream in YouTube Studio and your encoder
- Check eligibility and activation. In YouTube Studio, open Create → Go Live. Create or select a stream in Live Control Room. If live streaming has not been enabled before, allow up to 24 hours for activation.
- Choose an encoder. Use a computer software encoder that can play or send your prerecorded video as a live input. YouTube also supports compatible hardware encoders; its verified encoder guidance includes AJA HELO Plus functionality for scheduling prerecorded media, but hardware is not required for an ordinary computer workflow.
- Connect to YouTube. If the encoder offers YouTube as a destination, select it and follow its connection flow. Otherwise, copy the stream URL and stream key from the stream settings in Live Control Room and enter them in the encoder’s streaming settings. Treat the stream key like a password: do not share it, and reset it if it is exposed.
- Load the video and check the output. Select the prerecorded file in the encoder, then confirm that the preview shows the intended video and that the audio is audible and in sync. YouTube recommends testing and monitoring stream quality before and during a live stream.
- Start the encoder, then confirm the stream in Live Control Room. Follow the encoder’s send/go-live process and check YouTube’s preview and status before sharing the live link with viewers. Interface labels vary by encoder, so use its current instructions for starting a stream.
Copyright and YouTube rules still apply
A prerecorded file is still content being broadcast live. YouTube scans live streams for third-party material, including copyrighted content, and may interrupt or terminate a stream when it detects a match. Use video and audio you created or have permission to broadcast in this context.
A license does not necessarily prevent an interruption: YouTube says a rights holder may need to add your channel to its Content ID allowlist for licensed material. Confirm that requirement with the rights holder before going live. Copyright permission also does not establish that content complies with YouTube’s other policies.

Computer streaming versus mobile streaming
| Method | Subscriber threshold stated by YouTube | Prerequisites and fit |
|---|---|---|
| Mobile live streaming | At least 50 subscribers | Use when broadcasting from a mobile device; the threshold is specific to YouTube’s mobile live-streaming requirements. |
| Computer encoder | No subscriber minimum stated in YouTube’s computer encoder guidance | Requires live-stream eligibility, channel verification, and an encoder connected to YouTube. This is the relevant computer method for prerecorded media. |
Troubleshooting before and during the broadcast
- You cannot start a live stream: Check channel verification, live-streaming status, and whether a restriction occurred in the last 90 days. If live streaming was just enabled for the first time, wait up to 24 hours for activation.
- YouTube does not receive the encoder feed: Verify that the encoder is pointed to the correct YouTube stream URL and that the current stream key was entered correctly. Keep the key private.
- The preview has no picture or sound: Check that the encoder has selected the intended file and audio track, then test playback and monitor the preview before going live.
- The stream is interrupted after a copyright match: Stop using the matched material unless you have the appropriate rights. If it is licensed, check whether the rights holder must add your channel to its Content ID allowlist.
