Yes. As of 20 October 2026, Google offers a site-level opt-out in Search Console. Go to Settings → Search generative AI and select Exclude my site’s links and content from Search generative AI features. Google says the control covers AI Overviews, AI Mode and generative-AI features in Discover. The worldwide rollout reached all websites on 31 August 2026, and exclusion normally takes one to two days after activation, although caching and propagation can delay individual results.
This setting does not remove pages from ordinary Google Search, change their ranking, or control how Google uses content for AI training. Those are separate decisions with separate controls.

What the Search Console opt-out actually blocks
The Search Console setting is the broadest direct control for a website. Once active, Google says the site’s links and content are excluded from covered Search generative-AI features and are not used to ground the responses shown there. The covered surfaces are:

It is a display-and-use exclusion for those features, not a general request to disappear from Google. Pages can remain indexed, continue to rank in classic results, appear in image results and receive ordinary search traffic. Google also says the setting is not a ranking or inclusion signal for the rest of Search, so opting out should not be treated as either a penalty or a ranking boost.

How to activate it
- Sign in to the Google Search Console property that represents the site.
- Open Settings.
- Choose Search generative AI.
- Select Exclude my site’s links and content from Search generative AI features.
- Confirm the change and record the activation date for your change log.
Google says the control is site-level. It is therefore useful when the business wants one consistent policy for all content, but it is less precise than a page or passage directive when only selected material should be withheld.
What it does not control
Ordinary Search indexing and ranking
The exclusion does not remove a URL from Google’s normal web index and does not make the page unrankable. Use a noindex directive when the actual objective is to keep a page out of Google Search altogether. A noindex decision has a much larger visibility cost than the generative-AI exclusion.
AI model training
Google states that the Search generative-AI setting does not affect AI training. For that separate purpose, Google documents the Google-Extended control. Google-Extended is therefore not a substitute for the Search Console opt-out: it addresses training use, while the Search Console setting addresses appearance and grounding in specified Search AI features.

The wording covers the AI Overviews, AI Mode and generative-AI Discover features identified by Google. It should not be read as a promise about unrelated products, services or future surfaces that are not covered by the setting.

Page-level controls when a site-wide exclusion is too broad
Google’s page and snippet directives let a publisher withhold one page, a portion of a page or only a limited amount of text. These directives are read when Google crawls the URL, so they require the page to remain crawlable.
nosnippet: block a page’s preview and AI input
Add this element to the page’s <head>:
<meta name="robots" content="nosnippet">Google says nosnippet applies across web search, Google Images, Discover, AI Overviews and AI Mode. It prevents the page’s content from being used as a direct input for AI Overviews and AI Mode. Because it also suppresses the normal search snippet, expect a less informative or absent preview in conventional results while the URL itself may remain indexed and rank.
data-nosnippet: protect selected passages
When only a quotation, pricing block, answer or other section must be withheld, add the boolean attribute to a valid span, div or section element:

Text that should not be used in snippets or Search AI responses.
</section>This leaves the rest of the document available for normal processing. Use it for genuinely sensitive or strategically restricted passages rather than wrapping the entire page by accident.

max-snippet: set a character limit
Set a maximum snippet length with the robots meta directive:
<meta name="robots" content="max-snippet:160">The number is a character limit. Google documents max-snippet:0 as equivalent to nosnippet. A limit can reduce how much text is exposed without making the whole page ineligible for a preview, but it is not the same as a guaranteed word count or a promise that a particular sentence will be selected.
Non-HTML files: use an HTTP header
PDFs and other non-HTML resources cannot carry an HTML meta element. Send the directive in the HTTP response instead:
X-Robots-Tag: nosnippetThe same response-header mechanism can carry other supported robots directives, including a character limit. Confirm that the header is present on the actual file response, not only on an HTML page that links to it.

Why robots.txt is often the wrong answer
robots.txt tells Googlebot whether it may crawl a URL. It is not the same thing as a rule that tells Google which already-known URL may be shown in a search feature.
Google warns that robots meta tags and X-Robots-Tag directives are discovered only when the URL is crawled. If a disallow rule prevents crawling, Google cannot fetch the HTML or response headers and therefore cannot see a nosnippet, noindex or max-snippet instruction placed there. A common failed configuration looks like this:
User-agent: Googlebot
Disallow: /private-page/with a noindex tag on /private-page/. The disallow may prevent the tag from being read. If you need Google to process a page-level directive, leave the URL crawlable, publish the directive in the page or response, and let Google recrawl it. Use robots.txt when the primary requirement is to restrict crawling, not when you need Google to reliably process a page-level Search control.
Implementation recipes
Exclude the complete site from Search AI features
- Verify that the Search Console property includes the host and protocols you intend to govern.
- Activate the Search generative-AI exclusion under Settings.
- Capture a screenshot or export of the setting and note the time zone and activation time.
- Wait for Google’s processing window before judging results. The stated normal period is one to two days, with longer delays possible because of caching and propagation.
Block one HTML page’s preview and AI use
- Insert
<meta name="robots" content="nosnippet">in the page head. - Publish the page without a robots.txt disallow for that URL.
- Use URL Inspection to check the HTML Googlebot received.
- Request a recrawl when the inspection tool offers that option.
Hide only a section
- Wrap the exact text in a valid
span,divorsectionelement. - Add the boolean
data-nosnippetattribute. - Check the rendered DOM, especially if JavaScript inserts the text after the initial response.
- Request recrawling and monitor the page after Google refreshes its stored copy.
Remove a page from Search entirely
- Add a supported
noindexdirective in the HTML or HTTP response. - Keep the page crawlable so Google can read the directive.
- Inspect the URL and request a recrawl.
- Understand that removal from ordinary Search is broader than opting out of AI Overviews.
Verification, timing and troubleshooting
Confirm what Google actually received
Open Search Console’s URL Inspection tool and inspect the tested URL. Confirm that the returned HTML contains the intended meta tag, that the rendered page contains any data-nosnippet attribute, or that the non-HTML response includes the expected X-Robots-Tag. Checking only your browser’s source can miss server-side differences, redirects, personalization or JavaScript-rendered content.
Allow for two different clocks
The site-level Search Console exclusion is generally processed within one to two days after activation. Page-level preview directives depend on recrawling and Google’s refresh decision; Google documents a range from several days to several months. A page can therefore continue to appear temporarily after a technically correct change.
If an AI result still appears
- Check that the correct Search Console property and site-level setting were changed.
- Check for redirects: the directive must be on the URL Google actually serves.
- Check that robots.txt is not blocking the crawl needed to discover the directive.
- Check duplicate and canonical URLs; another indexed URL may contain the same text.
- Inspect the rendered HTML and response headers, then request a recrawl.
- Allow for cached copies and propagation before escalating the issue.
Choosing the least disruptive control
Choose the Search Console exclusion when the policy applies to every page and you still want normal indexing and ranking. Choose nosnippet when an entire page should remain findable but its preview and direct Search-AI input should be suppressed. Choose data-nosnippet for a narrow passage, such as a proprietary explanation embedded in an otherwise public article. Choose max-snippet when a bounded preview is acceptable. Choose noindex only when the page itself should leave ordinary Google Search. Use robots.txt for crawl-access requirements, and use Google-Extended for the separate question of AI training.
The practical rule is to match the control to the asset you are protecting: site, page, passage, crawl access, indexing or training. Combining directives without understanding their layers can produce the opposite result, especially when a robots.txt disallow hides a noindex or nosnippet instruction from Google.
