Can a USB-C Hub Replace an Expensive Dock? 5 Options to Consider

Five USB-C hubs offer alternatives to a full dock, but laptop compatibility, display limits, charging power and current prices determine whether one fits.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Yes—if your laptop supports the hub’s video and USB Power Delivery features, and you only need the displays and ports it can provide. A hub can cost far less than a full dock: Anker’s US catalog listed its 555 hub at $35.99 and 565 at $50.99, compared with the 575 dock at $199.99 and Prime DL7400 at $299.99 when the catalog was checked. Those are catalog snapshots, not guaranteed current prices, and the available evidence does not verify that all five hubs below are cheaper than one consistent dock benchmark.

Which five USB-C hubs are worth considering?

These models cover different desk setups, from basic HDMI and Ethernet to dual-display output. Specifications below come from the manufacturers; they are not independent test results. The Anker catalog prices cited above apply only to the two models with observed prices, not to every product on this list.

Anker 555: a compact single-display setup

The 555 combines HDMI, Gigabit Ethernet, card readers and three high-speed USB data ports. It is a practical fit when you need one external HDMI display and common desk connections rather than a larger dock. Anker lists a US catalog price of $35.99 in the snapshot used here. The laptop’s USB-C port must support DisplayPort Alt Mode for video and Power Delivery for charging. Anker 555 specifications.

Anker 565: HDMI plus DisplayPort

The 565 offers both HDMI and DisplayPort outputs, alongside Ethernet, card readers and USB data connections. Anker listed it at $50.99 in its US catalog snapshot. Do not assume that connecting two monitors will yield two independent desktops: confirm the behavior for your laptop and operating system before buying. Anker 565 specifications.

Belkin INC027: two HDMI outputs with OS-specific behavior

This is the clearest candidate for a two-HDMI setup, but the display mode differs by operating system. Belkin specifies extended and mirrored dual displays on Windows and ChromeOS; on macOS, it specifies mirrored display mode. Its 100 W figure is input to the hub, not power delivered entirely to the laptop: Belkin estimates that hub operation uses roughly 15 W, leaving up to 85 W for the host. Belkin INC027 specifications.

Belkin INC015: two HDMI outputs with different limits

The INC015’s HDMI ports are not equivalent. Belkin lists up to 4K at 60 Hz on the HDMI 2.0 output and up to 4K at 30 Hz on HDMI 1.4; achieving the former maximum requires a DisplayPort 1.4 signal from the host. With hub functions active and a 65 W charger connected, Belkin says up to 50 W can pass through to the laptop. The charger is sold separately. Belkin INC015 specifications.

Anker PowerExpand+ 7-in-1: lower video refresh, useful basics

This model combines HDMI, Gigabit Ethernet, card readers and two USB-A data ports. Its HDMI specification tops out at 4K at 30 Hz, and its PD input is up to 48 W, so check that those limits suit your monitor and laptop. A current price was not established. Anker requires the laptop’s USB-C port to support DisplayPort Alt Mode for video and Power Delivery for charging. Anker PowerExpand+ specifications.

What should you check before replacing a dock?

1. Confirm the laptop’s USB-C capabilities

USB-C describes the connector, not a guaranteed feature set. Check the laptop manufacturer’s specifications for DisplayPort Alt Mode or other supported video output, and verify Power Delivery support if you expect the hub to charge the laptop. A hub cannot add a capability the host port lacks. The Anker 555 and PowerExpand+ explicitly require DisplayPort Alt Mode for video and Power Delivery for charging. • 5-in-1 Connectivity: Equipped with a 4K HDMI port, a 5 Gbps USB-C data port, two 5 Gbps USB-A ports, and a USB C 100W PD-IN port. Note: The USB C 100W PD-IN port supports only charging and does not support data transfer devices such as headphones or speakers.
  • Powerful Pass-Through Charging: Supports up to 85W pass-through charging so you can power up your laptop while you use the hub. Note: Pass-through charging requires a charger (not included). Note: To achieve full power for iPad, we recommend using a 45W wall charger.
  • Transfer Files in Seconds: Move files to and from your laptop at speeds of up to 5 Gbps via the USB-C and USB-A data ports. Note: The USB C 5Gbps Data port does not support video output.
  • HD Display: Connect to the HDMI port to stream or mirror content to an external monitor in resolutions of up to 4K@30Hz. Note: The USB-C ports do not support video output.
  • What You Get: Anker 332 USB-C Hub (5-in-1), welcome guide, our worry-free 18-month warranty, and friendly customer service.

2. Match the number of independent displays

Count the separate screens you need, then verify that the laptop, operating system and hub support that many independent displays. Two video connectors on a hub do not, by themselves, prove that a particular computer can drive two independent screens. For the Belkin INC027, extended dual display is specified for Windows and ChromeOS; macOS is listed for mirrored mode only. For the Anker 565, confirm host-specific multi-display behavior before relying on both outputs.

3. Check resolution and refresh rate for each output

Look beyond a headline “4K” label. Refresh rate can differ between ports, as it does on the Belkin INC015, and the host’s video signal affects the result. Belkin says the INC015’s maximum HDMI 2.0 output requires a DisplayPort 1.4 signal. Match the hub’s limits to the monitor and the work you do; a 30 Hz output may feel less fluid than 60 Hz for everyday desktop use.

  • 5 in 1 Connectivity: The USB C Multiport Adapter is equipped with a 4K HDMI port, a 100W USB C PD port, a 5 Gbps USB A data port, and two 480 Mbps USB A ports

4. Calculate the power that reaches the laptop

Compare delivered charging power, not just the hub’s maximum PD input. The hub uses some power itself, and the charger connected to it also sets an upper limit. For example, Belkin estimates up to 85 W to the host from the INC027’s 100 W input after hub consumption, while its INC015 example leaves up to 50 W when using a 65 W charger. Include the cost of a separate compatible charger where one is not supplied.

5. Count the ports and include the full setup cost

List what you actually plug in: USB-A accessories, USB-C data devices, wired Ethernet, SD or microSD cards, and any other connections your desk requires. Then compare current prices in the same region and at the same time, including any charger or adapter you need. Anker’s observed US prices for the 555 and 565 were listed alongside two docks, but prices and stock can change; no current Belkin price or consistent five-product price ranking is established here. When is a hub enough—and when should you keep a dock?

A hub is a sensible substitute when your laptop supports its video and charging requirements, its port selection fits your setup, and its display limits meet your needs. The 555 or PowerExpand+ may suit a single-display desk; the 565 adds HDMI and DisplayPort options; Belkin’s dual-HDMI models address more specific multi-display needs, subject to their OS and host limitations.

Keep a dock in consideration if your setup depends on features the hub does not provide, more reliable multi-display behavior than the host-and-hub combination supports, or greater charging capacity than the hub can pass through. The product specifications here do not establish that any one hub will replace every dock, nor do they verify a five-item cheaper-than-dock ranking.
