If your home has no existing doorbell wiring, a battery-powered doorbell camera installed wire-free is usually the simplest route. Google’s guidance says that for a home without a doorbell system, “the easiest option is to install your doorbell wirelessly.” That avoids connecting doorbell wires, but you still need to mount the camera, set it up in its app, and connect it to Wi-Fi. The Nest Doorbell (battery) is one example—not a proven universal winner.
Which doorbell camera is easiest to install?
Choose a battery model that supports wire-free installation if you do not have an existing doorbell system or want to place the camera somewhere without wiring. Google specifically recommends wireless installation for a home without a doorbell system. This is manufacturer guidance, not a comparative hands-on test of every doorbell camera.

“Wire-free” does not mean tool-free: you still need to attach a mounting plate and configure the device. For a home with existing wiring, compare voltage and chime compatibility before deciding whether to use that wiring. A compatible wired connection may preserve a traditional chime or provide trickle charging, but installation involves electrical precautions.

What to check before choosing
| Factor | Why it matters | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Existing wiring | It determines whether you can avoid handling doorbell wires or reuse an existing circuit. | Without a doorbell system, Google says wire-free installation is easiest. If wiring exists, verify the model’s voltage and compatibility before connecting it. |
| Indoor chime | A wire-free battery doorbell may not ring a traditional chime. | Google says the existing wired chime will not ring when the Nest Doorbell (battery) is installed wire-free. It can send alerts to a phone and compatible Google speakers or displays. |
| Charging | A battery model may need to be removed for recharging. | Arlo says its Video Doorbell (2nd Generation) runs on battery power and charges with the included USB-C cable. Compatible existing wiring can trickle-charge it. |
| Smart-home setup | Alerts and connected devices affect day-to-day convenience. | Check current app and speaker/display compatibility for the devices you use. |
| Mounting location | Brick, stucco, or a corner can require drilling or an angled mount. | Review the installation guide for the wall anchors, tools, and angle adjustments supplied for the specific model. Google’s battery model includes a wedge that adjusts horizontally up to 20 degrees. |
Two battery-powered examples
Google Nest Doorbell (battery)
This is a relevant example when avoiding doorbell wiring is the priority: Google explicitly describes wire-free installation as the easiest option for a home without a doorbell system. Its installation guide lists a Phillips screwdriver and power drill, along with a wall plate, wedge, screws, anchors, spacers, and an unlocking tool. If installed wire-free, the existing wired chime will not ring; Google says alerts can instead go to a phone or compatible Google speakers and displays. The Google Store specifications describe the model’s wired setup as 8–24 V AC; check the current guide for the requirements that apply to your installation.

Arlo Video Doorbell (2nd Generation)
Arlo describes this as a battery-operated option. Its product information says it charges by USB-C and can be hardwired to compatible existing wiring for trickle charging; for that wired use, Arlo specifies 8–24 V AC. The installation instructions direct users to set it up through the Arlo Secure app and advise charging the battery before installation. These are manufacturer-described features, not evidence that Arlo is easier to install than Google’s model.
How to install a wire-free battery doorbell
Follow the current instructions for your exact model; mounting parts and app steps vary. A typical high-level sequence is:
Rank #2
- AI-Powered Smart Detection: Advanced AI technology accurately identifies people while filtering out vehicles and animals, so you only get the alerts that matter most
- Secure Cloud Storage: Protect your recordings with AES-128 encrypted cloud storage
- Pre-Capture Recording: Cloud subscribers benefit from pre-capture functionality, ensuring the camera starts recording right at the moment motion begins - never miss a thing
- Reliable 2.4GHz Wi-Fi Connection: Optimized for 2.4GHz networks to deliver stable, uninterrupted performance. (Not compatible with 5GHz Wi-Fi.)
- Exceptional Night Vision: Equipped with four powerful infrared LEDs and an advanced image sensor, providing sharp, detailed footage even in total darkness
- Charge the doorbell as directed. Arlo advises charging its second-generation model before installation.
- Install the required app, then follow its setup flow to connect the doorbell to your Wi-Fi network.
- Choose a location with a suitable view and a mounting surface you can safely drill into if required.
- Attach the supplied wall plate using the model’s instructions, screws, and any required anchors or angle wedge.
- Mount the doorbell and complete setup in the app, including checking that alerts reach the devices you intend to use.
Google’s battery installation guide lists the included mounting components and tools. Arlo’s instructions cover setup in the Arlo Secure app.

What changes if you use existing wiring?
Wiring can be useful if you want to keep a traditional chime or reduce how often you remove a battery doorbell to recharge it. It does not guarantee compatibility: check the camera’s voltage requirements and whether it supports your chime. Google’s guidance specifies 8–24 V AC for a wired Nest setup, and Arlo specifies 8–24 V AC for the second-generation model’s wired chime and trickle-charging use.
Rank #3
- Video Doorbell Camera for Complete Front Door and Entryway Protection: Monitor your front door with 2K video, person recognition, package detection, two-way audio, and IP65 weather resistance. Wired or wireless installation options.
- Arlo Secure Early Warning System Unlocks Advanced Features: Get 60-day video history, AI detection, and emergency response. A paid plan is required after trial. Live streaming and basic alerts work without a subscription.
- Smart Alerts That Keep You Informed: Get notifications for package and pet detection, along with person and vehicle recognition. Intelligent detection helps reduce false alerts and keeps you connected wherever you are.
- Only Get Alerts That Matter: Set custom activity zones to monitor areas like your front door and pathway, and use privacy zones to block sensitive spaces while reducing unnecessary motion alerts for more meaningful notifications.
- Flexible Power for Easy Installation: Choose a wire-free setup with a rechargeable doorbell or hardwire to existing wiring for trickle charging and uninterrupted security.
For a wired installation, Google instructs users to switch off power to the doorbell and chime at the breaker or fuse box, then confirm the correct circuit is off before disconnecting the old doorbell. Its wired installation guidance lists a screwdriver, drill, and ladder among the tools. If you cannot confidently identify the circuit, or the work involves wiring or transformer changes you are not qualified to do, use a qualified electrician.

- No existing wiring: Start with a battery model that supports wire-free mounting; this avoids connecting doorbell wires, though mounting and app setup remain necessary.
- Existing wiring and a traditional chime: Check both the camera’s voltage requirements and chime compatibility before choosing a model or wiring method.
- Want fewer battery removals: Check whether the model supports trickle charging from compatible wiring; this is not the same as assuming the battery never needs attention.
- Awkward mounting surface or angle: Check the included anchors and angle-adjustment hardware, and account for whether drilling is practical at the chosen spot.
