Not necessarily. A tsunami system can automatically detect a sea-level anomaly and alert operators without automatically issuing a public warning. For Indonesia’s InaTNT, BMKG describes an automated detection trigger that can sound an alert in the InaTEWS operations room and display a web notification. The sources available do not establish that this trigger itself sends a public warning. The distinction matters: detection, internal alerting, an official warning decision and public dissemination are separate stages.
Why does a volcanic collapse pose a different warning problem?
Many tsunami early-warning systems were designed primarily around tsunamis generated by tectonic earthquakes. The 2018 Sunda Strait tsunami followed the collapse of part of Anak Krakatau, a non-tectonic source. BMKG says Indonesia’s existing InaTEWS was not able to detect a tsunami with those characteristics in its usual way.

On its InaTNT background page, BMKG characterizes the 2018 collapse as involving 64 hectares of mountain-body material. That is BMKG’s description of the event, not a universally settled measurement of collapse volume.
The challenge is not only recognizing that something unusual happened. A system must observe a resulting sea-level change, distinguish it from background variation, alert the responsible operators, support a warning decision and get the warning to the public. An automated signal at one stage does not prove that every later stage is automatic.

What does InaTNT automate?
BMKG describes InaTNT as a system intended to integrate sea-level observations from tide gauges, buoys, HF radar, IDSL and water-level devices on automatic weather stations. Its detection approach adapts a short-term average/long-term average (STA/LTA) ratio: a short-window signal is compared with a longer-term background to identify a possible departure from normal conditions. An AIC picker is then used to refine estimated arrival timing.
BMKG says that when the detection threshold is exceeded, the system identifies a sea-level anomaly and its trigger can activate a sound alert in the InaTEWS operational room and a notification on the web display. This is evidence of automated detection and internal alerting. The description does not say that the same trigger automatically issues a public tsunami warning.

The published system description does not state the numeric STA/LTA thresholds, false-alarm performance, current station-by-station uptime, or the full operator procedure after an alert. Those details matter to understanding how the system performs in practice, but their absence does not mean the system has no automated alert capability.

The Joint Research Centre’s description of the Krakatau monitoring system says sea-level devices send real-time observations and abnormal sea levels generate alerts to BMKG for further warning decisions and dissemination. That account places an authority decision between an abnormal reading and public communication; it does not describe a sensor directly warning the public.

So the accurate answer to “Does a tsunami warning system automatically issue an alert when it detects a volcanic collapse?” depends on what “alert” means. InaTNT’s description supports an automated signal and operator alert. It does not establish automatic public warning issuance or provide the complete rules for that decision.
What role does IDSL/PUMMA play near Anak Krakatau?
BRIN reported on September 7, 2026 that IDSL/PUMMA at Rakata was being used with BMKG as a link between Indonesia’s Geological Agency (PVMBG) and BMKG for volcano-tsunami monitoring and early warning. BRIN researcher Semeidi said the system’s location close to the potential source allows rapid detection and helps connect the two agencies. This describes a monitoring and coordination role; it does not, by itself, specify how a public warning is authorized or delivered.

What do recent reports say about Anak Krakatau?
In a report dated September 5, 2026, the Geological Agency placed Anak Krakatau at Level III (Siaga). It assessed that the rebuilt volcano was relatively small and was not considered prone to a tsunami-generating collapse at that time, while saying that activity and morphology remained under intensive observation.
Separately, BRIN reported on September 17, 2026 that monitoring during increased Anak Krakatau activity in early September found no sea-level anomalies indicative of potential tsunami waves. That statement applies to the reported monitoring period; it is not a forecast or a guarantee of future safety. For present conditions, consult current updates from the responsible Indonesian agencies.

Can machine learning close the warning gap?
A 2025 Ocean Modelling study abstract describes machine-learning experiments using the 2018 Anak Krakatau case. In that study, nine minutes was the reported optimal input duration for full-waveform prediction. It is a result from a research experiment, not an operational response time or evidence that a machine-learning algorithm is deployed to issue warnings.
The broader hazard is not limited to one volcano. A USGS seminar description dated March 18, 2026 gives a global estimate of 400–800 oceanic and coastal volcanic edifices with potential for future collapse and associated tsunamis. That is an estimate of potential hazards, not a count of volcanoes facing imminent collapse.
What should readers take from the phrase “no algorithm converts it to alert”?
As a blanket claim, it is too strong: InaTNT does use an algorithmic detection process, and BMKG says a threshold trigger can generate internal alerts. The narrower, supportable point is that the available system descriptions do not show an automatic conversion from a detected volcanic-tsunami signal to a public warning. In the described chain, detection and internal notification are distinct from the authorities’ warning decision and public dissemination.
