A counterfeit or modified hardware wallet can steal cryptocurrency if it captures your recovery phrase, extracts or relays private-key operations, or changes what you approve on its screen. A genuine-device check and a secure element make those attacks harder, but neither proves that every stage of shipping and handling was untouched. Treat authenticity checks as necessary evidence, not a complete forensic guarantee.
What a tampered wallet can steal
Hardware wallets are designed to keep private keys inside a dedicated device rather than exposing them to a computer or phone. That design protects against many software infections, but it cannot protect a secret that a malicious device records before the wallet has a chance to secure it.

The recovery phrase is the decisive target
During initial setup, the wallet generates or displays a recovery phrase. Anyone who photographs, logs, types, or otherwise learns that phrase can recreate the wallet on another device and spend the assets without touching your original hardware wallet. If a seller has pre-generated the phrase, asks you to enter an existing phrase, or supplies a phrase on a card, assume the wallet is compromised. A legitimate device should generate a new phrase during your own setup and should never require you to reveal an existing phrase to a computer, website, support agent, or replacement device.
Private-key and bus interception
An implant can leave the original secure element intact while adding electronics around it. Such hardware could watch communication between the secure element and the main microcontroller, observe data shown on a display, or capture inputs during setup. Depending on the design, it might not need to extract a key mathematically; recording the recovery phrase or influencing an approval can be enough.

Transaction approval manipulation
A compromised computer can already substitute a recipient address, which is why a hardware wallet’s own screen matters. A malicious peripheral or altered display path could show a different address from the one the secure element signs, or could prompt you to approve an unintended transaction. Always compare the destination and amount on the wallet’s trusted display, not only in the desktop or mobile application.
Counterfeit devices
A counterfeit can imitate the case, packaging, branding, and cable while containing no manufacturer-approved security hardware. It may simply send your recovery phrase to an attacker or direct you to a fake setup application. A box that looks new is not proof that the device inside is genuine.
How tamper detection works
Manufacturers use several layers because no single check covers every attack. These layers provide different kinds of evidence: visible signs of opening, cryptographic proof of approved components and firmware, and resistance to attempts to probe or fault the security hardware.
Tamper-evident packaging and seals
Protective stickers and holographic seals over connectors can reveal that a package was opened. Trezor advises checking seals and package completeness before use. That inspection is useful for spotting obvious handling, but a seal is not a cryptographic control. As Ledger Donjon explains, classic holographic seals can be cloned, and a package can sometimes be opened and closed without visible damage. A perfect-looking sticker therefore provides only one signal.

Cryptographic authenticity and attestation
Cryptographic checks are stronger than visual inspection. Ledger devices use a device key pair and an issuer certificate. The Ledger Wallet application challenges the device, validates the certificate, and establishes a secure channel. A successful Genuine Check indicates that the security component and expected firmware path respond with manufacturer-approved cryptographic credentials.
Trezor devices receive a unique manufacturing certificate stored in the secure element. Trezor Safe 7 coordinates checks across two secure elements and a hardened microcontroller; Trezor says support for ML-DSA-44 was added in 2026. These certificates help the official software distinguish an approved device from a simple imitation.
Attestation has a deliberate limit. Ledger’s threat model says Genuine Check confirms the secure element but cannot verify the device’s physical supply-chain history. An attacker could theoretically add an implant around an authentic secure element and still pass the cryptographic check. Attestation answers “is this the expected security component and software path?” It does not answer “was nothing added or altered during shipping?”

Secure-element resistance to physical attacks
Secure elements enforce PIN checks, isolate key operations, generate or help generate entropy, and include sensors intended to detect abnormal conditions. Ledger describes light detectors for laser fault injection, temperature sensors, and voltage-glitch detectors. Trezor describes secure elements that enforce PIN protection, assist genuine-device checks, and supply independent randomness.

Trezor Safe 7 uses two secure elements and states that ten incorrect PIN entries erase the wallet. Its design is intended to preserve limits if one secure element fails or is tampered with. These controls reduce the value of probing, voltage glitches, temperature abuse, and repeated guessing; they do not make a device impossible to tamper with.
Why a genuine check is not a supply-chain guarantee
The distinction is important when deciding whether to trust a used, returned, or damaged wallet. A genuine check can establish that an authentic secure element is present and that the official application can complete the expected challenge. It cannot reconstruct who handled the device before you, detect every added wire or peripheral, or prove that the display and input path are original.
That residual risk is why provenance matters. Buying directly from the manufacturer or an authorized reseller reduces the number of uncontrolled handling points. It does not replace verification, but it makes a malicious pre-installation less plausible and gives you a documented route to support if something is wrong.

What to do before funding a new wallet
- Buy through a controlled channel. Use the manufacturer’s official store or an authorized reseller. Keep the invoice, seller name, order number, and shipping record.
- Inspect everything before powering up. Photograph the box, seals, labels, serial information, cable, and contents. Stop if there is unexplained damage, missing material, or a mismatch.
- Install only the official wallet application. Obtain it through the manufacturer’s documented distribution channel, not a link supplied by a seller or a search advertisement. Check that the application identifies the connected model.
- Run the official genuine-device check. Let the application perform its certificate or attestation challenge before creating accounts or depositing funds. A failure is a stop condition, not a prompt to continue with a workaround.
- Initialize the device yourself. Use the device’s own screen and buttons to generate a new recovery phrase. Never accept a pre-written phrase and never type your phrase into a website, computer, phone, or support chat.
- Verify the backup. Follow the device’s on-screen confirmation procedure. Store the phrase offline in a location protected from theft, fire, water, and unauthorized access. Do not photograph or upload it.
- Test a receiving address. After setup, compare the address displayed on the hardware wallet with the address in the application. Send only a small amount first, then verify that the balance arrives.
- Verify every spend on the trusted screen. Confirm the full destination address, amount, network, and fee on the device before pressing its physical approval controls.
If the box seal is broken or the device looks altered
A broken seal is evidence of handling, not automatic proof of theft. The correct response depends on whether the seller and manufacturer can explain it and whether the device passes the official check without asking for an existing phrase.

- Do not enter an existing recovery phrase. If the wallet is already in use, do not reconnect it to an unknown computer or approve transactions while investigating.
- Document the condition. Photograph seals, connectors, scratches, serial labels, and the purchase record. Keep the packaging intact.
- Contact the manufacturer through its official support channel. Provide the model, serial information, seller, and photographs. Ask for a documented disposition rather than informal advice from a marketplace seller.
- Keep the device offline. Do not fund it or install unofficial firmware while the authenticity question is unresolved.
- Move assets if compromise is plausible. Create a completely new wallet on a trusted device and transfer funds to it. Do not reuse a phrase that may have been exposed; a transfer to a new phrase is the recovery step.
If you already typed a recovery phrase into a suspicious device, treat every account derived from that phrase as exposed. A PIN change does not repair a leaked phrase, because the attacker can restore it elsewhere.

Do not rank a wallet by a holographic sticker alone. Provenance, certificate or attestation behavior, secure-element architecture, PIN retry and wipe rules, published threat models, independent audits where available, screen-based transaction verification, and a clear replacement procedure are more informative.
Everyday practices that close the remaining gaps
Protect the phrase separately from the device
The wallet can be replaced; the recovery phrase controls the assets. Store the phrase offline and separately from the device so that theft of one does not automatically reveal the other. Limit who can access it, and never enter it merely to “verify” a balance or claim an airdrop.

Use the screen as the approval boundary
Malware on a computer can alter an address before the transaction reaches the wallet. Read the destination and amount on the hardware wallet’s own display. If the device display is unreadable, behaves unexpectedly, or differs from the application, cancel and investigate.
Plan replacement before an emergency
Know how to restore a wallet using its recovery phrase on a trusted replacement device, but do not perform a test restoration on an internet-connected or borrowed device. If a wallet is lost, stolen, or suspected of tampering, create a new phrase and move funds rather than assuming that a PIN or firmware reinstall makes the old phrase safe.
Bottom line
A tampered hardware wallet can steal crypto, chiefly by capturing the recovery phrase or altering what you approve. Seals reveal some opening attempts; certificates and attestation establish that approved security components respond correctly; secure elements resist probing and guessing. None of those layers proves an untouched supply chain. Buy through an authorized channel, run the official genuine-device check, initialize the wallet yourself, verify transactions on its screen, and move funds to a newly generated wallet whenever compromise is plausible.
