Can a Software-Defined Radio in a Wireless Chip Intercept Nearby Communications?

Yes, but only when the chip exposes a genuine software-defined radio path and the software understands the signal. An SDR can sample nearby radio energy, demodulate it and decode packets for supported protocols. A normal Wi-Fi or Bluetooth chipset usually gives the operating system processed packets, not unrestricted raw IQ samples. Even when every frame is captured, encryption and authentication usually prevent recovery of the message content.

“Intercept” therefore covers three different outcomes: capturing radio samples, decoding protocol frames and obtaining plaintext. The first may be possible with suitable hardware; the second requires a matching implementation; the third normally requires valid keys or a specific vulnerability in the endpoints.

What an SDR can actually intercept

A software-defined radio is a programmable transceiver whose signal-processing functions can be changed in software so the same radio hardware can support multiple wireless protocols. A peer-reviewed survey by Akeela and Dezfouli (2018) uses this programmable-protocol capability as the defining characteristic.

That definition is narrower than “any device with a wireless antenna.” A fixed-function wireless card may tune channels and deliver 802.11 or Bluetooth packets, while hiding the samples and intermediate demodulation stages. Without firmware, a debug interface or a vendor software-development kit that exposes those stages, it cannot be treated as a general-purpose SDR.

Layer What a suitable SDR may provide What can still prevent the next step
RF capture Complex (IQ) samples, signal strength, timing and channel activity within the receiver’s tuning range and bandwidth Insufficient frequency coverage, bandwidth, antenna performance, sensitivity, synchronization or signal-to-noise ratio
Protocol decoding Demodulated symbols, frames, addresses and protocol metadata for an implemented waveform Missing modulation, framing, channelization, timing or upper-layer protocol support
Plaintext recovery Readable data when traffic is open or keys are legitimately available Encryption, authentication and key exchange; a captured frame alone does not reveal session keys

This distinction answers the common question “Can my Wi-Fi chip listen to nearby phones?” It may detect or process transmissions in the same band, but that does not mean it can expose raw samples, decode every device’s protocol or read protected content.

When a wireless chip qualifies as an SDR

Look for an exposed signal path rather than a marketing label. The practical signs are:

  • Raw IQ or baseband access: The driver, firmware or development kit must deliver samples before they have been reduced to ordinary network packets.
  • Programmable signal processing: You need software or FPGA logic that can change modulation, filtering, synchronization and framing, instead of a permanently fixed 802.11 or Bluetooth pipeline.
  • Documented tuning and bandwidth controls: An SDR implementation should let you select the operating frequency and instantaneous bandwidth appropriate to the signal.
  • Synchronization and timing support: Packet capture depends on clock recovery, channel timing and a stable reference; a stream of samples without synchronization may be unusable.
  • Driver and host integration: The computer must be able to move samples fast enough for the selected bandwidth and run the decoder in real time or from recordings.

The openwifi project demonstrates this model for IEEE 802.11. Its documented capabilities include monitor mode, real-time IQ capture, configurable frequency and bandwidth, and 802.11 packet injection and fuzzing. Supported hardware includes the ADALM-PLUTO board. Those features show that an SDR-based Wi-Fi implementation is feasible; they do not show that every commercial Wi-Fi chipset has the same access.

How an interception attempt works

A legitimate capture normally proceeds in stages. Each stage has its own failure mode, so a successful antenna connection does not guarantee a decoded packet.

  1. Identify the waveform. Determine whether the target is an 802.11 signal, Bluetooth BR/EDR, Bluetooth Low Energy, ZigBee, Z-Wave or another modulation. The protocol determines channel spacing, symbol timing, packet structure and required processing.
  2. Choose the RF path. Select a receiver whose tuning range covers the channel, whose instantaneous bandwidth contains the signal and whose antenna and front end provide adequate sensitivity. A receiver can only capture energy that reaches it with a usable signal-to-noise ratio.
  3. Acquire and record samples. Use raw IQ or baseband output when available. Record the center frequency, sample rate, gain and time reference so the capture can be reproduced and analyzed.
  4. Synchronize and demodulate. Recover carrier and symbol timing, apply the required filters and convert the waveform into symbols or bits. Clock error, frequency offset, multipath and weak signals can make this stage fail even when the signal is visible on a spectrum display.
  5. Decode frames. Implement the protocol’s preamble, channelization, error checks, addressing and frame format. A decoder for one standard does not automatically understand another standard in the same band.
  6. Inspect metadata and payload status. You may be able to identify addresses, timing, packet lengths, retransmissions and other signal metadata while the payload remains encrypted.
  7. Evaluate security. Determine whether the traffic is open, whether you possess authorized keys and whether a documented implementation flaw applies. Do not infer plaintext access merely because packets were captured.

What happens with Wi-Fi transmissions

For 802.11, an SDR design can expose monitor-mode traffic and real-time IQ samples, as openwifi demonstrates. With suitable frequency and bandwidth settings, a receiver can observe nearby transmissions, synchronize to frames and decode protocol fields that its implementation supports.

A conventional wireless card may perform some of that work internally and pass only processed frames to the operating system. If its firmware and drivers do not expose IQ or baseband data, installing a different packet-sniffing application cannot turn it into an unrestricted SDR. The limitation is architectural, not merely a missing user-interface option.

Decoding a Wi-Fi frame also does not remove higher-layer protection. An SDR can preserve encrypted frames for authorized analysis and can often reveal radio-level metadata, but recovering application content requires the appropriate session keys or an independently demonstrated weakness. Capturing more samples does not, by itself, derive those keys.

What happens with Bluetooth transmissions

Bluetooth is a short-range radio technology used in wireless personal area networks. NIST’s Guide to Bluetooth Security, published January 19, 2022, treats the radio link and its security procedures separately: being close enough to receive a signal is not equivalent to being authorized to read it.

The Bluetooth Core Specification states: “This Part describes the security system which may be used at the Link Layer. The Encryption, Authentication, and Key Generation schemes are specified.” Its Secure Connections procedures use AES-CCM encryption, HMAC-SHA256 authentication and P-256 elliptic-curve Diffie-Hellman key generation. The specification’s security tables include 128-bit authentication keys and configurable encryption keys from 56 to 128 bits, depending on the applicable mode.

An SDR can therefore be useful for studying Bluetooth modulation, timing and packet exchange, or for analyzing an authorized test device. It does not ordinarily convert encrypted Bluetooth frames into readable audio, files or control messages. The receiver still needs the right channel coverage, synchronization and a protocol implementation, and the endpoint security remains the decisive boundary.

When a vulnerability changes the answer

Interception attacks become more realistic when a protocol or implementation has a specific flaw. Intel’s 2019 KNOB advisory described a proximity attacker “usually within 30 meters or line of sight” who could intercept traffic and send forged negotiation messages between two vulnerable Bluetooth BR/EDR devices. Intel stated that both devices had to be vulnerable and recommended applying available updates.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

KNOB was not a universal Bluetooth decryption method. It depended on the affected negotiation behavior, vulnerable endpoints and physical proximity. A receiver that can hear two devices does not automatically satisfy those conditions.

A 2019 IEEE conference paper reported SDR-based analysis, demodulation, decoding, jamming and replay against vulnerable IoT radio protocols including Bluetooth, Bluetooth Low Energy, ZigBee and Z-Wave. Those results demonstrate protocol-specific research capability. They do not establish that an SDR can decrypt every device, bypass modern authentication or recover plaintext from arbitrary encrypted traffic.

Wireless chip or external SDR board?

The right platform depends on whether you need packet access or the radio signal itself. Use the following criteria before choosing hardware:

Capability to check Why it determines interception capability Questions to ask about a platform
Frequency range The receiver must tune to the target channel Does the documented tuning range include the complete signal, not just part of its band?
Instantaneous bandwidth A narrow setting can clip a wide signal and prevent demodulation Can the hardware capture the waveform’s full occupied bandwidth?
Receive sensitivity and dynamic range Weak or crowded signals may be lost or distorted Can gain be controlled without saturating on nearby transmitters?
Raw IQ or baseband access Without samples, you cannot implement an independent demodulator Are samples exposed through documented drivers, firmware or an FPGA interface?
Protocol and FPGA support Decoding needs waveform-specific processing and enough compute throughput Is there an implementation for the protocol, and can it run at the required rate?
Synchronization Carrier and clock errors can defeat frame recovery What timing and reference-clock facilities are available?
Antenna connectors and transmit controls Testing may require a suitable antenna, cable or a controlled conducted path Can you connect the intended antenna or shielded setup, and is transmit power controllable?
Duplex mode Some experiments require simultaneous receive and transmit; others do not Is the device full-duplex or half-duplex?

A wireless chip is sufficient when its documented interfaces already provide the packets or samples your authorized experiment needs. An external SDR development board is more appropriate when you need independent waveform processing, recordings, custom synchronization or a protocol implementation that the chip does not expose. The ADALM-PLUTO is one example of an SDR board used with openwifi; the project documents IQ capture and configurable 802.11 operation on supported boards.

Do you need a HackRF or PlutoSDR to sniff signals?

No single brand or board is a prerequisite. You need a receiver with suitable RF coverage, bandwidth, sensitivity, sample access and software support for the target protocol. A built-in wireless chip can be adequate for ordinary packet capture when its drivers expose the required mode. It is not adequate as a general SDR merely because it contains a transmitter and receiver.

An external board becomes the practical choice when you need raw IQ recordings, custom demodulation, FPGA processing, repeatable clocking or controlled transmit experiments. Select it by the capability checklist above, not by the number of protocols mentioned in its product description.

How to test without causing interference

Receiving, injecting, replaying and jamming have different legal and operational consequences. Openwifi explicitly warns users to follow local spectrum regulations and avoid over-the-air interference. The IEEE work on vulnerable IoT protocols also illustrates why replay and jamming must be treated as controlled security tests rather than casual experiments.

  • Obtain explicit authorization from the owner of every device and network involved.
  • Prefer conducted tests through cables and attenuators or use a properly isolated, shielded enclosure.
  • Keep transmit functions disabled unless the test plan specifically requires them and permits them.
  • Use the minimum power and bandwidth needed for the experiment, and monitor for leakage outside the test setup.
  • Do not inject, replay or jam traffic on shared channels where other users could be affected.
  • Record the hardware, firmware, protocol mode and endpoint versions so a finding can be reproduced and remediated.

The safe boundary is straightforward: capture and analyze signals only where you have permission, and treat any attempt to alter another device’s negotiation or traffic as an active security operation.

A practical decision rule

  • You only need ordinary network packets: Use a supported wireless adapter and its documented monitor or diagnostic mode.
  • You need raw waveforms or an unsupported protocol: Use an SDR path with IQ access, suitable RF coverage and an implemented demodulator.
  • You need readable protected content: Obtain authorized session keys or test an explicitly documented vulnerability; an SDR alone is not a decryption key.
  • You need to transmit test frames: Use a shielded or conducted setup, verify authorization and comply with spectrum rules.
