No. A smartwatch that claims to measure glucose on its own cannot diagnose diabetes or replace a glucose meter. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) says no smartwatch or smart ring intended to measure or estimate blood glucose by itself has been authorized, cleared, or approved. A watch may display readings sent by a separate glucose-monitoring device, but that does not mean the watch measured them.
Can a smartwatch measure blood sugar or tell you if you have diabetes?
Not by itself. The FDA’s February 21, 2024 safety communication says: “The FDA has not authorized, cleared, or approved any smartwatch or smart ring that is intended to measure or estimate blood glucose values on its own.” That applies regardless of brand, including claims that a watch can read glucose without a finger prick. A compatible watch or app might show information from a separate glucose monitor, such as a continuous glucose monitor (CGM). In that setup, the separate device measures glucose; the watch is a display. Check the product’s labeling to understand which device is doing the measuring and what the reading is intended to support.
How diabetes is diagnosed
Diabetes is diagnosed using clinical testing, not a smartwatch estimate. The American Diabetes Association (ADA) lists these U.S. diagnostic criteria:
#1 Best Overall
- CLINICALLY PROVEN ACCURACY: Track and manage your diabetes confidently with our reliable blood glucose monitoring system. Readings that are personalized, HI/LO target ranges, and easy-to-understand summaries of your blood sugar test results (1)
- BLUETOOTH CONNECTIVITY: Sync your glucose monitor kit and get readings automatically to a free app via Bluetooth for seamless tracking and data sharing with our blood sugar testing kit
- EASY TO USE: SmartLIGHT target range indicator (2) instantly shows if blood sugar levels are above, below, or within target range for quick, clear feedback
- SECOND-CHANCE SAMPLING (3): Apply additional blood to the same test strip within 60 seconds to help reduce strip waste, avoid unnecessary retesting, and save money over time with our blood sugar testing kit
- NO CODING REQUIRED: Get fast, accurate results without the hassle of manual coding, reducing the risk of user error and making testing simpler, quicker, and more reliable
| Test | Diabetes-range result |
|---|---|
| A1C | 6.5% or higher |
| Fasting plasma glucose | 126 mg/dL or higher |
| Two-hour oral glucose tolerance test | 200 mg/dL or higher |
| Random plasma glucose | 200 mg/dL or higher when severe diabetes symptoms are present |
These are ADA diagnostic thresholds, not smartwatch or home-meter performance figures. The ADA says testing should be done in a health care setting and usually repeated on a second day to confirm a diagnosis. An exception may apply when glucose is very high or classic symptoms accompany one positive test. A clinician can determine which test is appropriate and interpret the result. What a glucose meter measures—and what it does not do
A blood glucose meter measures glucose in a small blood sample. The usual process is to put a compatible test strip in the meter, obtain a small sample—commonly with a finger-stick lancing device—and touch the strip to the blood. The meter then displays a result. A meter can support glucose monitoring, but it does not turn a smartwatch into a measuring device or make a watch reading diagnostic. Use strips and lancing supplies compatible with the particular meter, and follow the meter’s instructions and your clinician’s advice.
How a CGM and a smartwatch display differ
A CGM is a separate wearable sensor system that provides ongoing glucose readings. Some CGMs can send data to an app on a smartphone or another smart device, which may include a smartwatch display. The sensor system—not the watch face—provides the glucose measurement.

For example, the FDA’s March 5, 2024 announcement described Stelo as a wearable sensor paired with an app on a smartphone or other smart device. That product-specific clearance was for adults 18 and older who do not use insulin, including certain people with diabetes and people without diabetes interested in how diet and exercise affect glucose. Stelo was not intended for people with problematic hypoglycemia and was not designed to alert users to that dangerous condition. These details describe that product and its stated indication; they are not a recommendation that a CGM is appropriate for everyone. Follow current device labeling and clinician guidance. - Do not use a watch’s own unapproved glucose estimate to diagnose diabetes, rule it out, or make treatment decisions.
- If you have symptoms or a health concern, arrange appropriate clinical testing rather than relying on a watch reading.
- If your treatment depends on accurate glucose readings, ask a health care professional which FDA-authorized meter or CGM suits your needs.
- Use the device’s instructions and clinician advice when interpreting readings or deciding whether a separate finger-stick check is needed.
The FDA warns that inaccurate readings can lead to dangerous diabetes-management errors, including taking the wrong dose of insulin, sulfonylureas, or other medicines that can rapidly lower blood glucose. FDA safety communication
