What Apple says about the iPhone flaw
Apple’s September 28, 2026 security bulletin for iOS 26.7.1 and iPadOS 26.7.1 identifies CVE-2026-86950 in CoreGraphics. Apple says processing a maliciously crafted file may lead to arbitrary code execution, and that the issue was addressed with improved bounds checking.

Apple says it is aware of a report that the issue “may have been exploited in an extremely sophisticated attack against specific targeted individuals” on versions of iOS before iOS 27. That is a limited statement about reported targeted attacks, not evidence that ordinary iPhone owners generally have been attacked. The bulletin lists iPhone 11 and later as compatible with this update.

Update your iPhone safely
- Back up first. For a manual iCloud backup, connect to Wi-Fi and go to Settings > [your name] > iCloud > iCloud Backup, then tap Back Up Now. Stay on Wi-Fi until it finishes; the screen shows the date and time of the latest completed backup. - Connect to power and Wi-Fi. Keep the iPhone connected while you check for and install the update.
- Check the update offered for your phone. Open Settings > General > Software Update. Review the installed version and any available update’s version and details. Apple’s update guide and iOS 26 download guidance direct users to this screen; availability depends on the device and its software state.
- Install it. Tap Download and Install and follow the prompts. Apple also supports automatic overnight installation while the iPhone is charging and connected to Wi-Fi, with a notification before installation. For a security update, checking and starting the installation manually is the direct option.
- Confirm it completed. Return to Settings > General > Software Update and check the version shown there.
If the update is missing or will not install
Apple lists several possible causes of wireless update problems: the iPhone may not support the software, storage may be insufficient, the download may be taking longer than expected, the update server may be unreachable, or installation may not complete. The phone needs a compatible software version, internet access and enough free storage; keeping it connected to power helps. Apple’s troubleshooting guide
- If the download is slow or the server cannot be reached, retry on the same network. If the problem continues, try another network.
- If the update still does not appear or wireless installation fails, use Apple’s computer-update instructions. The route depends on whether you have a Mac or a Windows computer and which software is available; check the devices and connectors you already own before choosing how to connect them. Apple’s guidance about web-based attacks says users who cannot update may enable Lockdown Mode if it is available, while updating to the latest iOS as soon as possible remains the goal. How to verify a personal Apple threat notification
A public security bulletin is not the same as an Apple threat notification directed to an individual. To check a notification, sign in directly at account.apple.com; Apple says a genuine notification appears at the top of the account page. Apple says threat notifications will never ask you to click links, open files, install apps or profiles, or provide your Apple Account password or verification code by email or phone.
