Use Apple Find My or Google Find Hub, signed in to the account linked to the device. Contact your carrier to suspend the line and ask about local IMEI blocking options; blocking a phone is not the same as locating or recovering it.
Why a SIM number cannot show you a phone’s location
A phone number is the dialable number associated with a mobile subscription. The SIM’s serial number (ICCID) and subscriber identity (IMSI) identify the SIM or subscriber side of mobile service; the phone’s IMEI identifies the handset. These are different identifiers, and none is a public location code that an owner can enter into a lookup site to see a live map. The FTC discusses mobile identifiers in the context of carrier monitoring, while FCC material describes ICCID as SIM serial information used in carrier authentication—not a consumer tracking workflow: FTC mobile marketing report; FCC/Federal Register.

Mobile networks may have technical means to determine a device’s location, but that does not create a universal customer-facing service for locating a lost phone by SIM number. The official owner recovery instructions instead direct people to account-linked services. Treat any site or person promising live location from a phone number or IMEI as unverified; do not give them passwords, one-time codes, or money.
What to do first: use the recovery service for your phone
Act promptly from a browser or another trusted device. Sign in to the account already associated with the missing phone. The location and controls available depend on the service, the phone’s setup and eligibility, and its current state.

How to find and secure a lost iPhone or iPad
- Open the Find My app on another Apple device, or use Apple’s supported lost-device route, and sign in with the Apple Account associated with the missing device.
- Select the device. Check its current or last available location, play a sound if it may be nearby, and mark it as lost. Lost Mode can display a contact number or message.
- If theft is suspected, report the missing device to your wireless carrier and ask about disabling the account or line. Report suspected theft to local police.
- If you have AppleCare+ with Theft and Loss coverage, follow Apple’s claim instructions. Keep the device in Find My and do not remove it from your Apple Account until the claim is approved.
- Consider remote erase if protecting the data matters more than continued location access. Apple’s support guidance explains the available options and consequences.
Apple’s cited support page is for Europe; support options, insurance availability, and terminology can differ by region. Apple’s missing-device guidance and Apple’s guidance for a lost or stolen iPhone provide the relevant steps.
How to find and secure a lost Android phone
- Open Google Find Hub in a browser or on another Android device, then sign in to the Google Account associated with the missing phone.
- Select the phone and use whichever location, secure, or erase actions are available.
- If the phone is missing or stolen, contact your carrier to suspend the line. If asked, provide the IMEI for local device-blocking procedures; report suspected theft to local police.
- Before choosing factory reset, weigh the privacy benefit against the loss of future Find Hub access: Google says a reset device will no longer be available in Find Hub.
Google says remote actions depend on power, network connectivity, account sign-in, Find Hub being enabled, and the device being visible on Google Play. Its guidance states: “To disable the device, your mobile service provider can utilize your device’s IMEI number.” This describes disabling the handset, not locating it with the IMEI. What your carrier can do—and what it cannot promise
Ask your carrier to suspend the SIM or line so it cannot continue to be used, and ask how to get a replacement SIM or eSIM. The carrier can explain whether it can use the handset’s IMEI to bar the device on supported networks. Exact terminology, procedures, and customer options vary by provider and country. Carrier blocking may protect a line or network, but it does not physically return the phone.

Carrier network records and location capabilities are not the same as an owner-operated tracking service. The official sources here do not establish one worldwide process in which a customer can request a live map from carrier records. If theft is suspected, report it to local police and ask whether they can request network records under local law; do not assume that this is available or guaranteed.

Government-backed IMEI blocking routes exist in some jurisdictions. For example, India’s Department of Telecommunications provides the CEIR lost/stolen handset process, and Brazil’s Anatel explains blocking a line and phone through IMEI. These are country-specific examples, not universal procedures. India’s guidance also notes that dual-SIM phones may have two IMEIs. See India CEIR and Brazil Anatel.

Report suspected theft to local police and provide proof of ownership and the IMEI if requested. For a phone you cannot recover, remote erase can reduce the risk of someone accessing personal data. Decide through the platform’s official service: Google warns that a factory-reset Android device will no longer be available in Find Hub, and Apple notes that erasing may affect later location access. If an AppleCare+ Theft and Loss claim applies, do not remove the device from your Apple Account or Find My before the claim is approved.

Protect your number and accounts from follow-up scams
Someone who takes control of a phone number may try to use it to access accounts that rely on text-message verification. The FBI’s Internet Crime Complaint Center reported 320 SIM-swapping complaints and approximately $12 million in adjusted losses in a 2022 announcement covering January 2018 through December 2020. Those figures concern SIM-swapping reports and losses, not lost-phone recovery outcomes. See the FBI IC3 announcement.
