Usually, no. If a Galaxy phone genuinely shows a Bluetooth headphone, earbud, speaker or car system as Disconnected, that device is not the active Bluetooth audio route. Music that continues playing is normally coming from the phone speaker, another selected output, or a second Bluetooth device. Android’s help describes the connected state plainly: when the phone and Bluetooth device are connected, the device shows as “Connected.”
Galaxy phones separate three things that are easy to confuse: whether an accessory is connected, whether its Calls and Audio profiles are enabled, and which device is selected in the Media output panel. Checking all three identifies where the sound is actually going.

What “Disconnected” means for Bluetooth audio
A Bluetooth accessory must have an active connection before the phone can send media to it. A status of Connected indicates that the phone and accessory have an active link; Disconnected means that link is not currently active for that accessory. The phone can still play music, video or a podcast, but the sound is then using another route.

Before releasing your hand, make sure the phone is firmly fixed. (Not applicable to rough walls, wooden surfaces, and other uneven surfaces)
If the status changes rapidly, or the phone and accessory disagree about the state, treat it as an unstable connection rather than proof that audio is reaching the disconnected device. Reconnecting and, if necessary, resetting the connection settings are Samsung’s documented escalation steps.
Why audio can continue when your checked device is disconnected
The phone speaker is the active output
Playback does not stop merely because a Bluetooth accessory drops. Galaxy can continue through its built-in speaker. This is the most common explanation when music remains audible after earbuds or a car system show as disconnected. Check the Media output panel before assuming the Bluetooth link is working.
A different Bluetooth accessory is selected
A Galaxy phone may have more than one Bluetooth audio device connected or recently available. You might check the status of a speaker while the phone is actually sending sound to headphones, a vehicle, or another paired device. The name shown in Media output identifies the destination that is receiving the current media stream.

Dual audio is sending sound to two devices
Supported Galaxy models can use Dual audio to play media on two Bluetooth devices. In that situation, one accessory can be active while another is not, and checking only one device can produce an apparently contradictory result. Availability depends on the Galaxy model and its software.

- SUPERIOR COMFORT — Unlike traditional circular ear buds, the design of EarPods is defined by the geometry of the ear. Which makes them more comfortable for more people than any other ear bud–style headphones.
- HIGH-QUALITY AUDIO — The speakers inside EarPods have been engineered to maximize sound output and minimize sound loss, which means you get high-quality audio.
- BUILT-IN REMOTE — EarPods with USB-C plug also include a built-in remote that lets you adjust the volume, control the playback of music and video, and answer or end calls with a pinch of the cord.
- COMPATIBILITY — Works with all devices that have a USB-C port.
- INTEGRATED MICROPHONE — A built-in microphone precisely captures your voice while you’re on the phone, taking a FaceTime call, or summoning Siri — so you’re always heard loud and clear.
The selected route changed without stopping playback
Galaxy’s Media output control lets you switch playback between the phone and connected audio devices. If that destination was changed, playback can continue seamlessly on the newly selected route while the accessory you expected to hear remains disconnected.
Check the three controls that determine where sound goes
| Control | Where to find it | What it tells you |
|---|---|---|
| Bluetooth connection status | Settings > Connections > Bluetooth | Whether a particular accessory has an active Bluetooth connection. |
| Calls and Audio profiles | Tap the gear beside the accessory in Bluetooth settings | Whether Galaxy is allowed to use that connected device for calls and media. |
| Media output destination | Quick panel > Media output | Which available device is receiving the current music or video audio. |
These controls are independent. An accessory can be connected for calls but have Audio disabled, or it can be connected with Audio enabled while another device is selected in Media output. Menu labels and layouts can vary by Galaxy model and One UI version.
Step-by-step: restore Bluetooth audio to the intended accessory
1. Confirm the accessory’s connection
- Open Settings.
- Tap Connections, then Bluetooth.
- Find the headphones, earbuds, speaker or car system you want to use.
- Read the status beside that specific device. It should say Connected before it can be the active Bluetooth media route.
If it says Disconnected, tap the device name to attempt a connection. Keep the accessory powered on and in pairing or reconnect mode according to its own controls. If the status immediately returns to Disconnected, continue with the profile and pairing checks below rather than repeatedly tapping the name.

Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →2. Enable the Audio profile
- Stay in Settings > Connections > Bluetooth.
- Tap the gear icon beside the accessory.
- Make sure Audio is enabled. If you also want hands-free calling, enable Calls as well.
Samsung notes that calls and audio will not play through a connected device when the relevant profile is disabled. A device can therefore show Connected yet remain silent for music if Audio is switched off. The Calls setting controls call routing separately; turning it on does not automatically guarantee that media Audio is enabled.

3. Select the device in Media output
- Swipe down from the top of the screen to open the Quick panel.
- Tap Media output.
- Review the listed destinations.
- Tap the intended Bluetooth headphones, earbuds, speaker or car system.
Samsung describes this panel as the control for switching playback between the phone and connected audio devices: “You can change the audio output by tapping your desired device.” If Phone is selected, the phone speaker remains active even when a Bluetooth accessory is connected.
4. Check for another connected device
Look through the full Media output list and the Bluetooth device list. If another accessory is connected, select the one you actually want. On a model that supports Dual audio, check whether two destinations are selected. Turn off or disconnect the unwanted accessory temporarily, then select the intended device again. This removes ambiguity while you test.
5. For a car, enable media audio
- Open Settings > Connections > Bluetooth.
- Tap the gear beside the vehicle’s Bluetooth entry.
- Enable Media audio (the label may appear as the Audio profile on some models).
- On the car’s own controls, choose its Bluetooth media source rather than radio, USB or another input.
Some vehicles implement Bluetooth phone calls without implementing Bluetooth media playback. In that case, calls can work while music cannot, even though the phone appears paired. Enabling Media audio on the Galaxy is necessary but cannot add a media feature that the vehicle’s system does not support.
When the status is wrong or keeps changing
Remove and pair the accessory again
- In Settings > Connections > Bluetooth, tap the gear beside the accessory.
- Choose the option to unpair or forget the device.
- Put the accessory into pairing mode.
- Return to Bluetooth settings, scan if needed, and select the accessory to pair it again.
- After pairing, reopen the gear menu and verify Calls and Audio (or Media audio) are enabled.
- Open Quick panel > Media output and select the accessory.
Re-pairing creates a fresh Bluetooth relationship on the phone and accessory. It also removes an old entry that may have retained an incorrect profile or destination.

Restart both sides
Restart the Galaxy phone and power-cycle the headphones, speaker or car system. Then connect the accessory before opening the media app. This is a practical recovery step when the displayed state is unstable, because it forces both devices to rebuild their connection instead of relying on the previous session.
Reset Wi-Fi and Bluetooth settings
If several accessories fail, or pairing repeatedly falls back to Disconnected, use Galaxy’s reset option for Wi-Fi and Bluetooth settings. The exact menu path varies by model and One UI version; use the Settings search field for “Reset Wi-Fi and Bluetooth settings” if the wording differs. A reset clears saved connection information, so you will need to pair accessories again afterward. It does not mean that a disconnected accessory can continue receiving audio; it is a repair step for the connection state.
Run Samsung Members diagnostics
Samsung recommends Samsung Members diagnostics as a further check. Open Samsung Members and use its diagnostics area to test the phone’s relevant functions. If the diagnostic reports a fault, save the result before contacting Samsung support or the accessory maker. Menu names and diagnostic availability can differ by device and software release.

Use a controlled test instead of relying on volume alone. First disconnect or turn off every other Bluetooth audio device. Then connect only the intended accessory, enable its Audio profile, and select it in Media output. Start playback at low volume and listen near the accessory. Finally, switch Media output to Phone: the sound should move to the handset speaker. Switching back to the named Bluetooth device should move it again. This confirms that the destination control, rather than the mere presence of a paired device, is determining the route.

For a car, perform the same test while the vehicle is stationary. Select the car’s Bluetooth media source and verify that its system displays the phone as the current media input. A successful hands-free call alone is not proof that Bluetooth music is supported.
What to check before replacing an accessory
If re-pairing and settings resets do not solve the problem, compare the accessory’s capabilities with the Galaxy phone rather than assuming the phone is defective. Use these criteria:
| Criterion | Why it matters | What to verify |
|---|---|---|
| Bluetooth media profile | The accessory must support Bluetooth media audio, not only calls. | Look for media-audio support in the accessory’s specifications or manual. |
| Galaxy and One UI compatibility | Pairing behavior and menu controls can vary by model and software. | Confirm compatibility with your exact Galaxy model and current One UI version. |
| Range and reliability | Distance, obstacles or an unstable radio link can cause repeated disconnections. | Check the maker’s stated operating range and return policy. |
| Battery life | A low or depleted accessory battery can end an otherwise successful pairing. | Check charging indicators and the expected battery duration. |
| Microphone and call support | Calls and media are separate Bluetooth functions. | Confirm that the accessory supports the call behavior you need in addition to music. |
| Separate Calls and Audio controls | Galaxy may expose these profiles independently. | After pairing, verify that the accessory exposes and enables the required controls. |
A replacement should solve a capability mismatch, such as a car that supports calls but not media audio. It cannot fix a Galaxy setting that still has Phone selected in Media output, so complete the routing checks first.
Common symptoms and the right fix
- Music plays from the phone while earbuds say Disconnected: connect the earbuds, enable Audio, and select them in Media output.
- Music plays, but not through the accessory you checked: inspect every destination in Media output and disable an unwanted second device.
- Calls work in the car, but music does not: enable Media audio for the car and select the car as the media source; some vehicles support calls only.
- The accessory says Connected, but there is no music: check the Audio profile and Media output selection rather than only the connection label.
- The status repeatedly flips between Connected and Disconnected: restart both devices, unpair and pair again, then reset Wi-Fi and Bluetooth settings if the instability affects multiple accessories.
- Two devices appear to receive sound: check whether the Galaxy model supports and has enabled Dual audio, then review the selected outputs.
Bottom line
A Galaxy phone cannot maintain an active Bluetooth media stream to an accessory that is genuinely marked Disconnected. If audio continues, it is using the phone speaker, another Bluetooth destination, or a Dual audio route. Confirm the accessory’s Connected status, enable its Calls and Audio profiles, choose it in Quick panel > Media output, and use re-pairing, a settings reset and Samsung Members diagnostics when the status remains wrong.
