A rogue Microsoft Entra external MFA configuration is a serious trust risk, but the available Microsoft documentation does not establish a real-world campaign called “TrustSink,” identify victims, or show that the documented integration bypasses Entra’s token checks. The practical takeaway is to audit which providers your tenant trusts, who can use them, and whether their application permissions are expected.
What “TrustSink” means—and what is established
Here, “TrustSink” describes a threat scenario: an attacker or compromised administrator introduces an unapproved external multifactor authentication provider into a Microsoft Entra tenant. The term should not be read as confirmation of a named, documented campaign. Microsoft’s documentation explains how external MFA is configured and validated; it does not establish that this particular attack has occurred.

External MFA is a tenant-configured authentication method. An outside provider handles an additional authentication interaction for users in scope, while Entra evaluates the sign-in policy and decides whether access is granted. That makes the provider configuration a consequential administrative trust relationship, not simply a user-selected app.

An administrator configures the external provider in the tenant’s authentication methods policy, supplying provider metadata such as an application ID, client ID, and OpenID Connect (OIDC) discovery URL, and grants the provider application consent. Microsoft’s management guide describes the configuration and consent requirements.

A user signs in with a factor handled by Entra. If policy requires another factor, the user can select the external MFA method, and Entra redirects the browser to the provider endpoint discovered from the configured URL.
-
The provider checks the request, performs its authentication action, and redirects the user back with a token. Entra checks the token’s signature and required contents before treating the external factor as satisfying MFA. The provider reference describes this OIDC flow.
This documented flow explains why an unapproved or compromised provider configuration matters: it participates in the authentication path. It does not, by itself, prove that a provider can bypass Entra’s stated validation or establish that passwords are captured, tokens replayed, or persistent access obtained. Those outcomes should not be asserted without evidence about a specific implementation or incident.

Can a rogue provider steal a password?
The documented integration alone does not establish that outcome. Entra’s first-factor sign-in occurs before the external-provider step in the described flow; the provider then supplies the additional authentication interaction. A malicious provider could be consequential because it is trusted for that step, but the Microsoft materials cited here do not say that the provider receives the user’s Entra password or can bypass token validation.
Whether credentials or other authentication data are exposed would depend on the provider’s actual behavior and configuration. Treat an unexpected provider as a security incident to investigate, but distinguish that prudent response from a confirmed claim that password theft has occurred.
How to audit external MFA in your tenant
-
Review the authentication methods policy. Identify external MFA methods that are enabled, their display names, and the included and excluded groups. Microsoft documents that administrators can enable or disable the method and scope it to groups.

Verify the provider details. Confirm that each configured provider, application ID, client ID, and OIDC discovery endpoint is expected and controlled by your organization or an approved provider.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy. -
Check application consent and permissions. Confirm that the provider application’s consent and permissions are authorized. Microsoft notes that consent is required; if it is missing, or if the application is deleted or loses permission, users cannot use the method successfully.
-
Investigate unexplained changes. If a provider entry is not approved, disable or delete it, then review the administrative changes and related account activity using your organization’s incident-response process. Disabling and deleting are documented controls; the investigation is security guidance, not a Microsoft playbook for a TrustSink incident.

A password reset alone is not evidence that an unexpected provider has been removed or that the trust configuration is safe. The provider entry is a separate tenant policy object, so verify that configuration as part of remediation.

Would a FIDO security key fix this?
A FIDO2 security key is an option for phishing-resistant passwordless sign-in; Microsoft lists external FIDO security keys among passwordless methods. See Microsoft’s authentication methods documentation for the relevant method context. A key can be part of a broader authentication strategy, but buying one does not remove a rogue external MFA provider from the tenant or reverse a compromised administrator account. The provider configuration still needs to be audited and corrected.
