A single prompt can still work for a short, simple clip. For a narrative sequence, planning shots, anchoring them with visual references, and editing the results separately gives the creator more control over what to change and what to keep.
Why a workflow helps when one prompt is not enough
A single prompt asks the video model to interpret the story, shot order, framing, style, and continuity together. That can be convenient for an exploratory clip, but it gives the creator fewer distinct places to adjust a result when a sequence has several scenes or needs revision.

A staged process makes those decisions explicit. Runway recommends storyboarding individual shots, often corresponding to potential generations of about 5–10 seconds, and recording details such as camera angle, lighting, character position, and visual appearance. Those are planning suggestions, not a universal limit on shot length.
The shift toward workflows is therefore practical rather than absolute: separate planning, generation, review, and editing can make multi-shot work easier to direct. It is not evidence that filmmakers broadly have abandoned single prompts; no representative adoption statistic is established here.

How to plan and assemble a multi-shot video
1. Turn the narrative into a shot list
Write down the sequence of visual beats before generating. For each shot, specify what is visible, what changes, the framing or camera angle, and any lighting or palette choices that matter. OpenAI’s Sora 2 prompting guide described a shot prompt as something to sketch like a storyboard, with framing, depth of field, action, lighting, and palette. The guide remains an example of shot-based prompt design; Sora itself was discontinued on April 26, 2026.
2. Prepare visual anchors for recurring characters and places
Use character and environment references when the same subject or setting must recur. Runway notes that one frontal character reference may still lead to subtle identity changes across generations; character plates showing multiple angles and framings provide additional visual guidance. Image input can also anchor elements such as wardrobe, set dressing, and overall aesthetic, as described in the Sora 2 prompting guide.
3. Generate shots as distinct units
Keep each shot focused on a single scene or idea, then generate and assess it in the context of the intended sequence. Runway’s developer documentation advises: “Write one clear idea per shot — keep each shot’s prompt focused on a single scene.” If the model can generate a multi-shot sequence from one prompt, that may be a useful starting point; a custom shot list offers more direct control over the planned sequence.

4. Review continuity, revise, and edit
Compare generated clips side by side for character appearance, environment, mood, and style. If one shot is wrong, revise that shot or its reference rather than rebuilding every scene from scratch, where the tool permits independent regeneration. Runway’s guidance recommends combining clips in editing software for longer work. Adobe describes a Firefly workflow that includes AI storyboards, video generation, reference-video composition, sound effects, and export to a Premiere Pro timeline; those are features Adobe announced, not independently tested results.
What current tool examples show—and what they do not
Runway: automatic or custom shot planning
Runway’s Multi-Shot Video app offers Auto mode, which interprets a narrative prompt into a planned sequence, and Custom mode, where the user specifies shots. Its help page says it supports up to five connected shots. At the time described by that page, the app ran on Kling Pro 3.0 and defaulted to a silent, 16:9, 720p, 10-second video, with controls for other settings. Its developer recipe describes a custom list of three to five shots, optional first-frame image anchoring, total durations of 5, 10, or 15 seconds, and a version field that can be pinned to a dated workflow version. Availability and controls can change, so check the linked documentation before relying on a particular setting.
Runway also notes that Multi-Shot Video uses credits and does not support unlimited generations in Explore Mode. Iteration cost matters: a workflow with more control may still require repeated generations and review.

Adobe Firefly: a described path into editing
Adobe’s July 17, 2025 announcement described reference-video composition—uploading a video and asking Firefly to transfer its composition into a generated video—and export to a Premiere Pro timeline. These details illustrate how generation can fit into a larger editing process; they should be read as Adobe’s feature description, not a guarantee of a particular creative result.

Sora: a historical prompting example, not a current option
The Sora 2 prompting guide is useful as an example of separating shot blocks and specifying storyboard-like visual details. OpenAI states that Sora was no longer available as of April 26, 2026, so it should not be treated as a currently available tool.

Visual references and shot planning can guide a model, but neither guarantees continuity. Review clips for changes in face, clothing, position, environment, lighting, and style; decide which differences are acceptable and regenerate or adjust the shots that break the sequence.

Consistency is also an active research problem. A 2025 paper by BITS Pilani-affiliated authors, Lights, Camera, Consistency: A Multistage Pipeline for Character-Stable AI Video Stories, reported a consistency-score decline from 7.99 to 0.55 when its visual anchoring mechanism was removed. That result belongs to the paper’s experiment; it is not an industry benchmark or evidence of the effect a commercial tool will produce. Research on multi-shot generation likewise describes cross-shot consistency and cinematic language as continuing challenges.
What to compare before choosing a workflow
- Shot control: Does the tool break a narrative prompt into shots automatically, let you set a shot list, or offer both?
- Continuity support: Can you supply character or scene references, anchor a first frame, or guide composition?
- Revision and editing: Can you regenerate an individual shot and move clips into an editing timeline?
- Output constraints: Check duration, resolution, aspect ratio, audio, and current availability for the specific tool and mode.
- Repeatability: Look for version controls and enough settings to recreate a sequence consistently.
- Iteration cost: Account for credits and the number of reviews or regenerations the project may need.
When to use a single prompt instead
Use a single prompt when the goal is a short exploratory clip or a deliberately simple sequence and detailed control over separate shots is not essential. Move to a staged workflow when shot order, recurring visual elements, independent revisions, or editing handoff matter. The workflow is not a guarantee of cinematic continuity; it is a way to make the creative decisions more visible and manageable.
