1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesYes, a Raspberry Pi 5 can send prerecorded video to YouTube Live, but it is not a proven, guaranteed 24/7 appliance. Raspberry Pi documents a software-encoding path, while continuous operation depends on your files, encoding settings, power, cooling, network, and recovery plan. YouTube also warns that a stream lasting longer than 12 hours may not be captured as an archive.
What you need to know before setting it up
- It is technically possible: Raspberry Pi documents a Pi 5 video-streaming example using software encoding. That demonstrates a supported path, not a performance guarantee for every resolution, frame rate, or playlist. Raspberry Pi streaming documentation.
- YouTube must allow your channel to livestream: Live streaming must be enabled, and first-time activation can take up to 24 hours. The channel must be verified and have no live-streaming restrictions in the preceding 90 days. YouTube Help: Create a live stream with an encoder and YouTube Help: Get started with live streaming.
- There is no verified 24/7 performance benchmark for a specified Pi 5 setup: Test your own media and output settings before relying on unattended operation.
- A single all-day broadcast is not a dependable way to preserve a replay: YouTube automatically archives streams under 12 hours; streams exceeding 12 hours may not be captured at all. YouTube Help: Archive live streams.
Plan the Pi 5 setup
Hardware and connectivity
Prepare the Pi 5, a 27W USB-C power supply, boot storage, and a network connection. Raspberry Pi identifies power, boot media, and networking as setup considerations, including for headless use. A case or cooling solution may be prudent for a sustained workload, but the available documentation does not establish a specific cooler requirement or temperature target. Keep the playlist accessible
Store the video files on storage the Pi can reliably read. Choose an encoder workflow that can play files in sequence or loop them, then send its output to YouTube. Check that the files have compatible video and audio streams and that the chosen output profile works with your exact playlist. The cited Pi example uses software encoding; it does not establish that every media format or output setting will run continuously on every Pi 5.
Prepare your channel and stream key
Enable livestreaming in YouTube Studio and allow time for initial activation. In YouTube’s Live Control Room, configure an encoder stream and copy the YouTube stream URL and stream key into your encoder. Treat the key like a password: do not publish it in a script, screenshot, or public configuration. Confirm the incoming stream in Live Control Room before making it public. Configure, test, and supervise the stream
- Start with Raspberry Pi’s documented software-encoding approach. Its Pi 5 example replaces
v4l2h264enc extra-controls="controls,repeat_sequence_header=1"withx264enc speed-preset=1 threads=1. This is an example element change in Raspberry Pi’s streaming guidance, not a complete playlist command or a guarantee for a particular YouTube profile. Build the rest of the pipeline around your actual files and test it. Raspberry Pi streaming documentation. - Set output deliberately. Choose a resolution, frame rate, video bitrate, audio settings, and keyframe interval that your encoder and network can sustain. The available Pi documentation does not certify a particular bitrate or resolution for 24/7 playlist streaming, so do not assume desktop OBS settings will work unchanged. Test with the intended source files and output profile, and check YouTube’s Live Control Room for stream health and audio/video quality.
- Run an unlisted test before going public. Verify playback, sound, playlist transitions or looping, and the incoming stream in Live Control Room. YouTube recommends testing the encoder, monitoring audio/video, and checking local archive files. YouTube Help: Troubleshoot your live stream.
- Make recovery part of the design. Configure the playback process to start at boot and restart after an unexpected exit; arrange remote monitoring so you can tell whether the process, network, and YouTube ingest are still working. These are practical engineering measures, not a guarantee of uninterrupted service.
- Decide how you will preserve replays. If a complete archive matters, make a local recording or plan shorter broadcast segments and verify the resulting files. Do not rely on one continuous stream longer than 12 hours to produce a complete YouTube replay. YouTube archive guidance.
Copyright and monetization are separate from the technical setup
Use content you have the rights to stream
YouTube’s livestream terms place responsibility on the creator to hold the rights required for streamed and archived material, including applicable music licensing rights. A video being prerecorded, publicly available, or already uploaded elsewhere does not by itself establish that you may rebroadcast it. YouTube Livestream terms and conditions.
Do not assume looping qualifies for monetization
YouTube’s July 15, 2025 policy clarification describes repetitive or mass-produced material as inauthentic content and says reused content is evaluated at the channel level. Repeating a playlist does not by itself establish monetization eligibility. Rights and the channel’s original value matter; the policy update was not a blanket ban on livestreaming prerecorded video. What can interrupt a Pi-hosted 24/7 stream?
- Power loss or unstable power: check the supply and connections, and confirm that the Pi restarts cleanly after power returns.
- Network interruption: verify the Pi’s connection and whether the encoder reconnects to YouTube after service returns. Monitor remotely rather than assuming a local process is still reaching YouTube.
- Encoder or playlist process exits: inspect logs and confirm the playlist path and file permissions. Configure an automatic restart and test that it works.
- Audio, video, or buffering problems: check YouTube’s stream health and test the same files and output settings again. Reduce demands on the pipeline if the Pi or connection cannot sustain the chosen configuration.
- Missing replay: check the stream duration. A broadcast exceeding 12 hours may not be captured by YouTube, so use a verified local recording or shorter planned segments if archiving is important.
- Stream rejected or interrupted by policy: check channel eligibility and restrictions, then review whether your content and music rights cover the live and archived use.
Pi 5 versus a cloud-hosted stream
| Consideration | Raspberry Pi 5 | Cloud-hosted continuous stream |
|---|---|---|
| Where it runs | Your Pi, storage, power supply, and network. | A provider’s hosted service; check its features and terms. |
| Control | Direct access to local files and configuration. | Depends on the service’s upload and playback workflow. |
| Reliability responsibility | You manage power, network, software restarts, and monitoring. | The provider manages its infrastructure; you remain responsible for your content and YouTube account. |
| What is established | Raspberry Pi documents a Pi 5 software-encoding example; no exact 24/7 performance benchmark for a specified configuration is established. | YouTube’s encoder directory mentions a cloud-based tool for continuous 24/7 prerecorded-video streaming; that listing does not independently validate a particular provider. |
| YouTube rules and content rights | Still apply. | Still apply. |
Or let it run in the cloud
If you want the playlist running without keeping a Pi, computer, or home connection on, StreamNeo is a YouTube-only cloud service for uploaded videos. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It loops the video from the cloud, with automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream. Any quality up to 4K 60fps streams as uploaded at one flat price per slot; there are no quality tiers. The first day is free with no card. Monthly service is $9.99 per month. The service includes 10 GB storage per slot, pooled across active slots, and the same features on every plan; only billing length changes. UPI and cards are accepted in India, and card checkout is available worldwide. See StreamNeo for details, then start the free day.
