You can monitor an OBS stream without stopping playback: leave OBS streaming, then check its incoming status in YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room from another browser or device. To confirm what viewers actually see and hear, open the public watch page on a separate device as well. These checks do not require you to stop OBS or end the YouTube stream.
Check stream health in YouTube Live Control Room
- Start OBS and keep it streaming. In YouTube’s encoder workflow, wait for the preview in Live Control Room, then select Go live. Once the stream is running, leave OBS’s start and stop controls alone while you monitor it.
- Open YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room in another browser or on another device, and select the active stream. Check its status and any error messages; the dashboard also provides real-time analytics. This lets you inspect YouTube’s incoming stream health separately from OBS.
- Check the viewer-facing stream separately by opening its YouTube watch page on another device. Verify that the stream is accessible and check its audio and video on that playback device. YouTube recommends checking access through channel and watch pages, including on mobile, and continuously monitoring audio and video quality.
The Live Control Room health state and the watch-page check answer different questions: one reports the incoming stream, while the other helps verify playback on a particular device and network. A healthy dashboard does not guarantee the same playback experience on every viewer’s device.

What the dashboard can—and cannot—tell you
Live Control Room indicators
YouTube documents stream status and error messages, concurrent viewers, duration, likes, chat rate, views, average view duration, reactions, and reminders set among the Live Control Room indicators for encoder streams. Which metrics appear can vary by stream type.

Live Control Room versus YouTube Analytics
Do not treat Live Control Room figures and YouTube Analytics as interchangeable. YouTube says Analytics is based on the video ID and is processed and despammed; the two surfaces measure different things. A live metric is not, by itself, a guarantee that playback is working for every viewer.

Latency and apparent delay
Latency is the delay between an encoder or camera capturing an event and its appearance in the stream. YouTube notes that lower latency may increase playback buffering. As a result, the watch page on your remote device may be behind OBS; delay alone does not show that OBS stopped or that playback is broken.
Choose the right remote-monitoring method

Use OBS WebSocket only when you need OBS control
OBS WebSocket lets compatible external tools control or automate scenes and sources; it does not provide a remote video preview. OBS says WebSocket has been included by default since OBS Studio 28. If you enable it, configure authentication and keep the password private: OBS recommends password protection against unauthorized control.

If you need to see or operate the entire streaming computer, remote desktop software is a separate option. It is not required to read YouTube’s stream-health dashboard, and the appropriate setup and security practices depend on the software and network you choose.

Keep monitoring from interrupting the stream
- Use Live Control Room to check YouTube’s status and errors; use a separate watch page and device to inspect viewer-facing playback.
- Do not press OBS’s stop control or YouTube’s End Stream as part of routine monitoring. The dashboard and playback checks can be performed separately from stopping the encoder.
- Allow for latency and buffering before interpreting a remote playback delay as a stream failure.
- Before an important event, run a test stream, preview it before going live, and check audio and video during playback. YouTube recommends testing and continuous quality monitoring.
- If using OBS WebSocket, require a password and do not share it.
