How to Keep a Raspberry Pi FFmpeg Stream Running After a Power Outage

Use systemd to start FFmpeg after a Raspberry Pi reboot and restart it after qualifying exits, then verify the feed at its destination.

To bring a Raspberry Pi FFmpeg stream back after a power outage, configure a systemd service to start at boot and supervise FFmpeg if it exits. That covers reboot recovery and process-exit recovery; it does not prove the camera, network, or receiving platform is working. The steps below use an illustrative service you must adapt to your own paths, account, input, and output.

What needs to recover

Power restoration, Pi startup, FFmpeg startup, and a healthy broadcast are separate stages. A boot-enabled service handles starting FFmpeg after the Pi reboots. A systemd restart policy handles qualifying exits while the service is supervised. Neither detects every stalled stream: a process can remain active while its video is frozen or its destination is unreachable.

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

  • Power and boot: the Pi must receive adequate power and boot successfully.
  • Service startup: systemd must load and start the unit without an interactive login.
  • FFmpeg and endpoints: the executable, input, credentials, network path, and output must be valid.
  • Broadcast health: confirm the receiving platform reports an incoming or healthy stream; a locally active service is not an end-to-end check.

Create a systemd service for FFmpeg

This example runs FFmpeg in the foreground as the service’s main process. Replace the account, paths, command arguments, input, and output with values for your setup. The sample input and output are placeholders, not a working stream command.

[Unit]
Description=FFmpeg live stream
Wants=network-online.target
After=network-online.target

[Service]
Type=simple
User=streamer
WorkingDirectory=/home/streamer
ExecStart=/usr/bin/ffmpeg -nostdin -i INPUT -c copy -f flv OUTPUT
Restart=on-failure
RestartSec=10

[Install]
WantedBy=multi-user.target

Make the service context explicit

  • ExecStart uses an absolute executable path. Check that FFmpeg is actually installed at /usr/bin/ffmpeg on your system.
  • User and WorkingDirectory must exist, and that account must have permission to access any files, devices, and credentials the command needs.
  • Keep FFmpeg in the foreground. Do not add & to the end of the command; systemd needs to track the process it supervises.
  • Keep stream credentials out of publicly readable files and logs. Do not expose a live stream key in a unit file that other users can read or in troubleshooting output you share.
  • Wants=network-online.target and After=network-online.target request ordering around the network-online target; they do not establish that DNS, a camera, or the remote destination is reachable.

Choose the restart policy deliberately

Restart=on-failure retries after qualifying failures such as a non-zero exit, signal termination (subject to systemd’s documented exceptions), timeout, or watchdog expiry. Restart=always also restarts after a clean exit. The systemd.service manual says that with always, the service is restarted whether it exited cleanly, was terminated abnormally by a signal, or hit a timeout: systemd.service manual. A systemd-initiated stop or restart does not trigger the policy to override that operation.

Use RestartSec=10 as an example delay, not a universal value. If an endpoint is unavailable and FFmpeg exits, a measured delay avoids a tight failure loop. Confirm the behavior and option availability for the systemd release installed on your Pi. Do not wrap FFmpeg in an unbounded shell loop without understanding how systemd tracks the main process and restart counter.

Enable it at boot and check it now

  1. Save the unit as /etc/systemd/system/ffmpeg-stream.service, adapting the example and protecting any credentials it requires.
  2. Enable and start it: run sudo systemctl enable --now ffmpeg-stream.service. Enabling configures it for boot; --now also starts it immediately.
  3. Check the unit state: run systemctl status ffmpeg-stream.service. Look for whether it is active, failed, or repeatedly restarting.
  4. Read current-boot logs: run journalctl -u ffmpeg-stream.service -b. Inspect the errors rather than assuming an active service means the stream is healthy.
  5. Verify the receiving platform: confirm that it sees the incoming stream and that the video is moving. Check the source and destination as well as the local service.

Test the outage recovery path safely

After configuring the service, verify ordinary boot startup and FFmpeg behavior before relying on it for an unattended broadcast. If you deliberately test loss of power, account for the risk of abrupt shutdown to the Pi and any attached storage; do not treat a single successful test as proof of long-term reliability.

UPS HAT (D) for Raspberry Pi, 5V Uninterruptible Power Supply
  • for Raspberry Pi: Uninterruptible Power Supply UPS HAT for Raspberry Pi 4B/3B+/3B, etc. Supports charging and power output at the same time, with dynamic path management, stable 5V output. Supports 21700 ba-tte--ry ( ba-tte--ry is NOT included). Onboard warning indicators, easy to check if the ba-tte--ry is connected correctly
  • Uninterruptible Power: It is able to charge the ba-tte--ries and provide power output at the same time from external power supply. Automatically switch over to ba-tte--ries output if external power supply is unavailable, keeps the system running without any trouble
  • Dynamic Path Management, More Stable Power Supply: Multi ba-tte--ry protection circuits: over charge/discharge protection, over current protection, short circuit protection, more safe and stable
  • Powering the Raspberry Pi via Pogo Pins: Powering the Raspberry Pi via pogo pins, without using any GPIO resource, compatible with Raspberry Pi 4B / 3B+/3B, etc.
  • Real time monitoring: Monitoring the ba-tte--ries voltage, current, power, and remaining capacity via I2C. When the voltage dips too low, it is possible to save files properly and then shut down the system by software, to avoid any data loss
  1. Confirm that the Pi boots when power is restored and that its power supply is suitable for the board and attached load.
  2. Check systemctl status ffmpeg-stream.service to see whether the unit started, failed, or is retrying.
  3. Use journalctl -u ffmpeg-stream.service -b to identify missing executables, permission problems, invalid inputs, or network and output errors.
  4. Confirm FFmpeg has a valid source and destination and that the receiver reports a healthy incoming stream.
  5. If FFmpeg remains active but the video is frozen, add a stream-aware health check only if the source or platform provides a reliable signal. A process restart policy alone may not catch a hung-but-running stream.

Account for camera and network behavior

The exact FFmpeg arguments depend on the camera or other input protocol and the receiving destination. FFmpeg documents RTSP input and output support and protocol options that can be set on the command line or through AVOptions: FFmpeg Protocols Documentation. Choose transport settings for the actual camera or server; no single transport flag is a universal reconnect fix.

Because network ordering does not guarantee endpoint availability, decide how the service should behave when the camera, DNS, or destination is unavailable. A restart delay can retry when FFmpeg exits; a wrapper or health-check design may be needed for a specific transient failure or a stream that stalls without exiting. Make retry timing and failure behavior visible in logs, and avoid rapid, unbounded retries.

Use the right recovery layer for the failure

Recovery layer What it addresses What it cannot prove or do
Boot-enabled systemd unit Starts FFmpeg after a reboot. It cannot prove the input or destination is usable.
Restart=on-failure or Restart=always Relaunches FFmpeg after the exits covered by the selected policy. It cannot establish that media is healthy in a process that remains alive.
Stream-aware monitoring Can detect a missing or stalled feed when its check is reliable. It cannot keep the Pi powered or ensure it boots.
UPS Can bridge power loss within the supported load and runtime. It cannot recover after its battery is depleted or fix a system crash.

Consider a UPS for short interruptions

A UPS or Raspberry Pi UPS HAT can complement boot startup and process supervision by bridging an outage within its capacity. Check compatibility with your exact Pi model, power output, camera and other connected peripherals, and desired ride-through duration. No general runtime or compatibility claim applies to every board and load.

Raspberry Pi’s configuration documentation describes power indicators by model: for Pi 1 through Pi 4, the red PWR LED indicates normal operation with a stable 5 V supply and may be off or flickering under undervoltage; Raspberry Pi 5 also lists power and reset reason fields. These are useful clues, not a diagnosis of every sudden shutdown. Consult the guidance for your board: Raspberry Pi configuration documentation.

Troubleshoot the common failure points

Symptom Likely area to inspect Next check
The Pi does not boot after power returns. Power supply, board, storage, or boot path. Check the power path and board-specific indicators or logs; the service cannot run until the Pi boots.
The unit is failed immediately. Invalid executable or command path, permissions, missing files, or FFmpeg argument error. Read journalctl -u ffmpeg-stream.service -b and correct the reported issue.
The unit repeatedly restarts. FFmpeg exits because an input, network endpoint, or output is unavailable or misconfigured. Inspect the journal, verify the endpoints and credentials, and use a measured restart delay.
The unit is active but no stream arrives. Input, output URL or key, network reachability, or receiver state. Check FFmpeg logs and verify the incoming stream at the destination.
The stream arrives but video freezes. A live process may be stalled without exiting. Use a reliable stream-aware health check appropriate to the source and receiver; a basic systemd restart policy may not detect it.

Or let it run in the cloud

If your goal is an always-on YouTube stream of uploaded videos rather than a live camera feed from the Pi, StreamNeo is a cloud option: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. The Pi and your home connection do not have to stay on. StreamNeo streams uploaded videos to YouTube; it does not go live from a camera.
