Can a Raspberry Pi 5 Stream a 4K 60fps Loop to YouTube Live?

A Raspberry Pi 5 is not a reliable choice for encoding a 4K60 YouTube Live loop. Learn why relaying a pre-encoded file is different and what to test.

Not reliably by encoding the video on the Pi itself. Raspberry Pi 5’s 4K display output and 4K HEVC decoding are not 4K video encoding capabilities. Raspberry Pi’s own streaming guidance uses software encoding on Pi 5, and its published real-time H.264 result is 1080p30—not 4K60. A Pi 5 might relay a compatible pre-encoded loop without re-encoding, but that exact setup is not established as dependable; test it end to end before relying on it.

What the Pi 5 can—and cannot—do

Three different capabilities are easy to confuse: displaying a 4K signal, decoding a compressed video, and encoding video for a live stream. They are not interchangeable. Raspberry Pi documents dual 4Kp60 display support and 4Kp60 HEVC hardware decoding for the Pi 5, while noting that other codecs run in software. Neither display output nor decoding demonstrates that the Pi can encode 4K60 in real time. Raspberry Pi’s BCM2712 documentation describes the distinctions.

The Pi 5 launch article likewise names a “4Kp60 HEVC decoder” as part of the multimedia subsystem; it does not describe a 4K video encoder. Raspberry Pi’s 2023 launch article

For camera streaming, Raspberry Pi’s documentation instructs Pi 5 users to use the software encoder x264enc, rather than the v4l2h264enc pipeline element used on Pi 4 and earlier. Raspberry Pi’s H.264 performance white paper reports real-time software encoding at 1080p30. That is a vendor-published result for the tested resolution and frame rate—not a ceiling for every possible workload, but also not evidence of real-time 4K60 encoding. Choose a workflow based on whether it encodes or relays

Approach What it involves Practical assessment
Encode a live 4K60 source on the Pi 5 The Pi must encode each frame in real time. Do not rely on this for a stable 4K60 stream: the available Raspberry Pi performance result is 1080p30, and the consulted sources do not establish real-time Pi 5 4K60 encoding.
Relay a pre-encoded loop The pipeline must stream-copy the encoded video rather than decode and re-encode it. Container, timestamps, audio handling, and RTMP/RTMPS muxing still need to work. Plausible to test, but no exact Pi 5-to-YouTube workflow or sustained reliability is established here. Run a long end-to-end test before depending on it.
Use an external encoder A different hardware or software encoder handles real-time 4K60 encoding; check codec support, bitrate, RTMPS support, and upload capacity. The safer route when dependable 4K60 is a firm requirement.
Reduce output to 1080p30 Use a workload closer to Raspberry Pi’s published real-time H.264 software-encoding result. A more credible Pi 5 fallback, but test the actual settings and complete setup.

A relay only avoids the main encoding load if it genuinely passes the encoded video through. If software in the pipeline decodes and re-encodes the loop, the Pi must still perform the encoding work. Evaluate a setup by its encode-or-relay behavior, codec compatibility, resolution and frame rate, upload headroom, keyframe and bitrate settings, audio muxing, and long-run stability.

Configure the YouTube ingest to match the source

YouTube’s current encoder guidance supports RTMP/RTMPS ingest and lists H.264, HEVC, and AV1 video, with frame rates up to 60 fps. It recommends constant bitrate (CBR), a two-second keyframe interval, and RTMPS for encrypted transport; keyframe intervals should not exceed four seconds. For 4K/2160p60, YouTube lists recommended video bitrates of 50 Mbps for H.264 and 35 Mbps for HEVC or AV1. These are YouTube ingest recommendations, not evidence that a Pi 5 can encode or sustain them. YouTube’s live encoder settings and bitrate guidance

  • Resolution and frame rate: Set the encoder or relay to the intended 2160p60 output only if the source and complete pipeline support it.
  • Codec and bitrate: Match the video codec to YouTube’s accepted options and use the corresponding recommended bitrate. A connection needs sustained headroom beyond the video target to accommodate audio and network variation; that is operational guidance, not a Pi performance measurement.
  • Rate control and keyframes: Use CBR and a two-second keyframe interval where the encoder exposes those controls; keep the interval at or below four seconds.
  • Transport: Prefer RTMPS when configuring the ingest URL and stream key.
  • Audio and muxing: Confirm the loop has an audio track if required, that audio and video timestamps remain valid, and that the chosen container and muxer can produce a stream YouTube accepts.

Test the full loop before scheduling it

Gigabit Ethernet on the Pi 5 is a local network interface specification, not a promise about your internet upload speed or the route to YouTube. Raspberry Pi’s processor documentation lists Gigabit Ethernet; measure the actual connection used by the streaming setup.

  1. Confirm whether your software is encoding or stream-copying the file. Check that the file’s codec, resolution, frame rate, audio, and container work with the chosen ingest pipeline.
  2. Measure sustained upload capacity on the same network connection and at the time the stream will run. Leave headroom above the video bitrate for audio and network variation.
  3. Configure the YouTube stream key and ingest using RTMPS where supported. Set CBR and a two-second keyframe interval if the encoder allows it.
  4. Run a private or unlisted end-to-end test. Check YouTube’s stream health, playback resolution, audio/video sync, dropped frames, and whether the loop restarts cleanly.
  5. Keep the test running long enough to expose thermal or stability problems, and repeat it after changing the source, software, network, or settings. No short test proves indefinite reliability.

Common failure points

  • The Pi cannot keep up with 4K60: A software-encoding pipeline may overload the system. Do not infer encoding capacity from 4K display output or HEVC decoding. Reduce the target to a more credible workload such as 1080p30, or move encoding to an external encoder.
  • YouTube reports poor stream health: The upload route may not sustain the selected bitrate, even with Gigabit Ethernet between the Pi and router. Measure sustained internet upload and lower the bitrate or resolution if needed.
  • The relay stutters or loses audio sync: Check whether it is stream-copying or accidentally re-encoding, and inspect container compatibility, timestamps, audio handling, and muxing.
  • The stream does not connect or drops: Verify the stream key, ingest URL, RTMPS support, and encoder configuration. Reconnection behavior depends on the software or encoder; do not assume the Pi itself will recover a dropped YouTube session.
  • The picture looks wrong or the selected resolution is unavailable: Check that the uploaded source actually has the intended resolution and frame rate, and that every stage of the pipeline preserves them. A 4K display connection does not turn lower-resolution media into a native 4K60 stream.

Or let it run in the cloud

If the goal is to keep a YouTube channel live with uploaded video rather than encode a live camera feed on a Pi, StreamNeo is a cloud option: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It loops uploaded videos, not camera footage. Nothing has to stay on at home; every slot streams the uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, with no re-encoding or quality tiers. It automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card; the monthly option is $9.99 per month. Start the free first day on StreamNeo.
