Not natively, and not through Sony’s standard PS5 software. PS5SX2, an unofficial PCSX2 port for jailbroken PS5 consoles, has experimental frame generation that can display steady 60 fps gameplay at 120 Hz on a compatible screen. That is generated output—not a claim that PS2 games are rendered at 120 fps. It also requires a jailbreak, and results vary by game, console model, firmware and settings.
What does “up to 120 FPS” mean here?
PS5SX2’s 2.00 release notes say: “On a 120 Hz TV a 60 fps game is shown at 120 and a 30 fps game is shown at 60.” The project describes this feature as experimental and says it works only while the game’s frame rate is steady. The claim is about generated display frames: the game itself still runs at its original frame rate. It does not mean the emulator makes every PS2 game render natively at 120 fps. In practical terms, a 120 Hz screen is needed for the advertised 120 Hz output from steady 60 fps gameplay. Frame generation does not improve a game’s underlying speed or make an unstable title stable. A 30 fps game may be displayed at 60, but the original game is still running at 30 fps.

What do you need to run PS5SX2?
PS5SX2 is homebrew software, not a feature in the normal PS5 interface. The project README says it requires a jailbroken PS5 and the PS5SX2 Helper payload, loaded with kstuff. The helper is described as enabling the emulator at startup and giving it access to the required data directory. See the PS5SX2 project documentation for its stated requirements.

Sony does not support general PS2 disc playback on PS5. Its PS5 safety guide says PlayStation, PlayStation 2 and PlayStation 3 format software cannot be played from a disc. Sony’s backward-compatibility guidance addresses PS4 games on PS5; it is not a route for running PS2 discs.
How well do PS2 games run?
There is no sourced, independently published overall compatibility rate or average performance figure for PS5SX2. The project publishes game-by-game test entries, but those examples—including tests at 30 fps, around 60 fps, and results with dips or limited play time—do not establish that the whole PS2 library works or predict performance for an untested game. The project also distinguishes full-speed emulation from the frame rate shown by a game.

The project’s performance guide says many PS2 games were designed for 30 fps, or 25 fps on PAL discs. Some titles have optional 60 fps patches. Those patches can roughly double CPU and GPU work, so a title may need a lower resolution or other settings changes to remain playable. These are project claims, not independent benchmark results. According to the project guide, a regular PS5 or PS5 Slim has less graphics power than a PS5 Pro; heavy games on those models may need 3x or 4x resolution, while the guide says the Pro runs many games at 6x. Those figures are project guidance, not a promise for every title. Higher resolution and a 60 fps patch can increase the workload, so the right settings depend on the game and whether stable performance matters more than image sharpness.

- Jailbreak requirement: You need a compatible jailbroken console and the helper setup; this is not an ordinary PS5 setting.
- Compatibility and stability: Results are title-specific. A listed test is not a guarantee, and short test sessions do not prove long-term stability.
- Frame rate versus output: Generated frames can raise the displayed refresh rate when gameplay is steady, but do not change the game’s native rendering rate.
- Display: The 120 Hz claim applies to a 120 Hz TV or display. Buying one does not solve jailbreak, compatibility or performance limitations.
- Settings: A higher internal resolution or optional 60 fps patch may increase system load and require compromises.
What does Sony say about modified consoles?
Sony warns that installing update data from another source or by another method—or using a console that has been altered or modified—may cause the console to operate improperly or prevent installation of official update data. Sony also says such actions can void warranty and affect warranty or repair services. This is Sony’s stated warning; it is not evidence of a specific account-ban outcome. Is the 120 Hz feature worth it?
It is most relevant to someone who already has a jailbroken PS5, a 120 Hz display, and a game that runs steadily at 60 fps in PS5SX2. For a 30 fps title, the release notes describe output at 60 Hz, not 120. If the game struggles to maintain its frame rate, the experimental feature may not run as intended. The practical decision is therefore about a specific game and setup—not a blanket upgrade for the PS2 library.
PS5SX2 2.00, build vk-285-139, was listed by the PS5 Homebrew Store as updated October 8, 2026. The project README says updates are planned weekly while work continues toward broad PS2 compatibility; that is an intention, not a guarantee of release timing or universal compatibility.
