But one part of Bungie’s sci-fi extraction shooter has a strong survival-horror angle: Dire Marsh (Night), where darkness, limited visibility and environmental hazards can make each encounter harder to read. Whether that makes it the year’s scariest game is a matter of taste, not an established fact.
What kind of game is Marathon?
Bungie describes Marathon as a sci-fi PvP extraction shooter set on Tau Ceti IV. Players take the role of cybernetic mercenaries called Runners and venture into persistent zones. The game launched on March 5, 2026, for Steam, PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S, according to Bungie’s launch announcement.

That overall format matters: the available official descriptions do not establish a traditional single-player survival-horror campaign. Instead, the game combines multiplayer runs, faction contracts and story details uncovered as players explore.
Why Dire Marsh (Night) leans into horror
The clearest horror case is a specific zone, not the whole game. Bungie says Dire Marsh (Night) is slower-paced than its daytime counterpart and “plays more like a survival horror experience.” Its Season 2 announcement points to darkness, obscured long sightlines, fewer players and additional environmental challenges.
#1 Best Overall
- Cronos: The New Dawn is a brutal third-person survival horror where you fight for the future by salvaging the past. Burn monsters before they merge. Extract souls from the living. Adapt or die.
- Set in a grim world where Eastern European brutalism meets retro-futurist technology, Cronos: The New Dawn lets you experience a gripping story that straddles the line between past and future.
- The enemies you’ll encounter are nightmarish creatures, born from the remnants of humanity – defeating them will require you to make full use of your arsenal.
- The creatures you kill won’t stay dead for long. Fallen enemies can be absorbed by others - through a grotesque process called Merging - to become faster, tougher, and far deadlier.
- This physical edition of Cronos: The New Dawn comes with bonus in-game content and a set of collectible stickers.
Darkness makes threats harder to read
When long sightlines are obscured, it is harder to identify what is ahead and judge when to move. That uncertainty can create tension, especially when threats may be present beyond the visible area. Bungie describes these design choices; they do not prove that every player will find the zone frightening.
The flashlight is a tactical choice
Bungie says players must choose when to use a flashlight while navigating the dark. Light can help reveal the way forward, but using it may also make a Runner easier for others to spot. That trade-off can make a basic act of looking around feel risky.

Other players change the kind of fear
Because Marathon is a PvP extraction shooter, danger can come from other Runners as well as the environment. That differs from fear driven mainly by scripted encounters or a fixed monster. The balance between those threats depends on the run, so the experience is not the same as a tightly controlled, single-player horror story.

It is fair as an opinion, particularly if the claim refers to Dire Marsh (Night). It is not a verifiable industry ranking: Bungie’s descriptions establish a survival-horror-like design for that zone, but they do not measure player fear or compare Marathon with every horror release of 2026.
Rank #3
- An utopian world, both mad and sublime
- Visceral, spectacular and unforgiving combat
- Blast giant machines and mutants using your multiple skills and advanced weapons
- Upgrade your arsenal and equipment
A useful way to judge the claim is to ask what kind of fear you mean:
- Uncertainty: Dire Marsh (Night)’s darkness and obscured sightlines are directly supported as design features.
- Vulnerability: The need to navigate hazards and decide when to use a flashlight can create risk, but players remain armed Runners in an extraction shooter.
- Consequences: The cited official descriptions do not establish a fear ranking based on the cost of losing a run.
- Source of danger: The format includes other players and environmental threats, rather than relying only on scripted horror encounters.
Those distinctions make the title’s “scariest” claim most persuasive for players who find low visibility and unpredictable human opponents more unsettling than conventional horror set pieces.
Rank #4
- 2.5D adventure with world-renowned puzzle platformer action
- Bring the kingdom back from the verge of clockwork oblivion in Trine's most magical story, with fiendish villains and memorable allies
- Combine forces in 1-4 players (single player, local and online co-op)
- Beautiful fantasy world with stunning visuals
- New combat system and tense boss encounters
How Marathon’s story adds atmosphere
The world’s story is uncovered across runs rather than presented as a single conventional campaign. Bungie says players learn about six factions through contracts and discover what happened on Tau Ceti IV through narrative objects, audio and text logs, cryptic graffiti and abandoned colony systems. Achievements and discoveries unlock Codex entries that can be viewed outside runs. The approach supports mystery and atmosphere, but it should not be mistaken for proof that the game is a single-player horror campaign. Details are in Bungie’s January 20, 2026 gameplay announcement.

What Bungie had planned for the game’s next phase
As of October 9, 2026, Bungie’s announced schedule pointed to a major Symbiosis update on December 8. Its September 14 update said a smaller October 6 release would reset progression and the in-game economy, refresh rewards and improve the live game; it also marked a move away from fixed seasonal deadlines. These are announced dates and plans, not confirmation here that every change arrived as scheduled. See Bungie’s development update.
Best Value
- Mythical Violence: Expect intense, imaginative combat
- Gory Visuals: Some scenes may contain graphic content
- Explicit Language: This game includes strong language
Bungie’s September roadmap described Symbiosis as including a permanent PvE experience, a refreshed Perimeter zone, a social space and firing range, experimental team deathmatch, a new Runner shell and onboarding improvements. The planned PvE mode was intended to let players explore and take on challenges without being hunted by other Runners. Bungie also said it wanted Tau Ceti IV to feel more alien and hostile, with additional alien combatants and a new zone; those were future intentions, not descriptions of already released content. The plans are outlined in Bungie’s future-of-Marathon article.
