A NAS you already own and leave running may have a low marginal cost, but it is not automatically cheaper: power, hardware, backup needs, internet reliability, and the full VPS bill all matter. Measure and compare those costs before deciding.
How the setup works
YouTube Live accepts video from an encoder connected to YouTube’s server URL with a stream key. The encoder can run on a computer or a hardware device; a NAS can serve as the host only if its model and software can perform the required encoding and keep sending the stream reliably. YouTube’s encoder workflow says that enabling live streaming for the first time can take up to 24 hours, so set that up before a scheduled launch.

A prerecorded loop is still a live encoder session: the encoder repeatedly reads the video and sends a live feed to YouTube. The NAS does not make an unsupported encoder compatible, and container support should not be assumed across NAS models. Synology, for example, directs users to check whether Container Manager is available for their exact model and compatible package version in its model-specific guidance.
Check whether your NAS can do the job
- Identify the exact model and software. Check the manufacturer’s compatibility information for the NAS model, operating-system version, and encoder or container package you plan to use. A product family or a successful setup on another model is not proof of compatibility.
- Confirm the encoder can sustain the workload. Test the actual file at the resolution and frame rate you intend to stream. Watch encoder load and stream health; a short successful test does not establish that the NAS can maintain a continuous session.
- Check upload headroom and continuity. The NAS needs a reliable outbound connection with enough capacity for the stream. Account for other household upload use, as well as possible router, ISP, and power interruptions.
- Plan for maintenance and recovery. Decide how you will detect a stopped encoder, restart it, and confirm that the YouTube stream has resumed. The sources cited here do not establish an uptime advantage for either a NAS or a VPS.
Use YouTube-compatible stream settings
Follow YouTube’s current encoder settings guidance for the target resolution and frame rate. YouTube recommends RTMPS, constant bitrate, and a two-second keyframe interval; do not exceed four seconds. It lists H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1 among supported codecs. Choose a bitrate appropriate to the intended quality and the stable upload capacity available; the right setting is not one universal number.

- Entry-level NAS Personal Storage:UGREEN NAS DH2300 is your first and best NAS made easy. It is designed for beginners who want a simple, private way to store videos, photos and personal files, which is intuitive for users moving from cloud storage or external drives and move away from scattered date across devices. This entry-level NAS 2-bay perfect for personal entertainment, photo storage, and easy data backup (doesn't support Docker or virtual machines).
- Set Your Devices Free, Expand Your Digital World: This unified storage hub supports massive capacity up to 64TB.*Storage drives not included. Stop Deleting, Start Storing. You can store 22 million 3MB images, or 2 million 30MB songs, or 43K 1.5GB movies or 67 million 1MB documents! UGREEN NAS is a better way to free up storage across all your devices such as phones, computers, tablets and also does automatic backups across devices regardless of the operating system—Window, iOS, Android or macOS.
- The Smarter Long-term Way to Store: Unlike cloud storage with recurring monthly fees, a UGREEN NAS enclosure requires only a one-time purchase for long-term use. For example, you only need to pay $459.98 for a NAS, while for cloud storage, you need to pay $719.88 per year, $2,159.64 for 3 years, $3,599.40 for 5 years. You will save $6,738.82 over 10 years with UGREEN NAS! *NAS cost based on DH2300 + 12TB HDD; cloud cost based on 12TB plan (e.g. $59.99/month).
- Blazing Speed, Minimal Power: Equipped with a high-performance processor, 1GbE port, and 4GB RAM on Board, this NAS handles multiple tasks with ease. File transfers reach up to 125MB/s—a 1GB file takes only 8 seconds. Don't let slow clouds hold you back; they often need over 100 seconds for the same task. The difference is clear.
- Let AI Better Organize Your Memories: UGREEN NAS uses AI to tag faces, locations, texts, and objects—so you can effortlessly find any photo by searching for who or what's in it in seconds. It also automatically finds and deletes similar or duplicate photo, backs up live photos and allows you to share them with your friends or family with just one tap. Everything stays effortlessly organized, powered by intelligent tagging and recognition.
Use the YouTube server URL and stream key in the encoder’s streaming destination settings. Keep the key private. Test with representative video and audio, and monitor the stream-health indicators rather than assuming that a connection alone means the picture and sound are good. YouTube says: “Make sure to test before you start your live stream. Tests should include audio and movement in the video similar to what you’ll be doing in the stream.”
Account for the 24/7 archive limitation
YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. A single uninterrupted 24/7 session exceeds that duration, so do not assume YouTube will provide a complete replay of it. If a replay matters, plan shorter sessions or a separate archive workflow, and verify YouTube’s current behavior before relying on it.

Compare the monthly costs on equal terms
Measure the NAS’s additional wall power while streaming, then compare that incremental energy cost with the full cost of a VPS able to run the same encoder and stream. If the NAS would already be powered on, charging the stream for all of its normal consumption can overstate its marginal cost; if streaming requires a new NAS or backup equipment, allocate those costs too.
Calculate monthly incremental energy use as: streaming power increase in watts × 24 × 30 ÷ 1,000 = kWh per month. Multiply that result by your electricity price per kWh. Use a wall-power measurement in the NAS’s normal state and while streaming, rather than assuming a power figure from a product specification.

| Cost or factor | NAS | VPS |
|---|---|---|
| Monthly baseline | Measured incremental electricity; allocate hardware cost only to the extent it is attributable to this use. | Instance rental, plus applicable address, tax, storage, traffic, and backup charges. |
| Encoding capacity | Depends on exact model, supported software, and performance with the real video, resolution, and frame rate. | Depends on the chosen VPS configuration and its ability to encode the same workload. |
| Connection and continuity | Depends on home upload headroom and local power, router, and ISP continuity. | Depends on provider network and instance availability; the cited sources establish no uptime winner. |
| Operations | You maintain model compatibility, the encoder, and recovery at home. | You administer the server and verify provider limits and add-ons. |
As dated examples rather than universal VPS prices, Hetzner’s price-adjustment documentation effective June 15, 2026 lists the CAX11 at €5.99 per month and the CX23 at €5.49 per month for Germany/Finland, excluding VAT and IPv4. Those figures do not establish that either configuration can encode a particular video reliably. Recheck the relevant region, instance capacity, transfer allowance, and additional charges before comparing: Hetzner price adjustment.
A practical way to decide
- Confirm the exact NAS can run an appropriate encoder; consult official compatibility information for its model and software version.
- Run a representative YouTube test with the intended video and settings. Check encoder load, audio and video, stream health, upload stability, and recovery after a restart.
- Measure the NAS’s wall power in its normal state and during streaming. Use the difference if it would be running anyway.
- Calculate the energy cost using your own tariff, then add hardware, backup, or resilience expenses incurred for the stream.
- Price a VPS that can run the same workload. Check its region, configuration capacity, traffic rules, taxes, and any address, storage, or backup charges.
- Choose based on both cost and operational risk. A compatible NAS can be a plausible low-marginal-cost host when power and upload are dependable and you are comfortable maintaining it. Remote infrastructure may suit you better if reducing dependence on home power and networking matters more than minimizing marginal spend.
