Yes—if your specific NAS can continuously play prerecorded files and encode or relay them to YouTube. A NAS that only stores videos is not enough. You also need a stable upload connection, uninterrupted power and a way to detect and recover from failures. If the NAS cannot run the required workflow, a VPS or a dedicated encoder may fit better. The right choice depends on the whole streaming setup, not storage capacity alone.
What a NAS must do to replace a VPS
For a prerecorded YouTube stream, something must read the video, keep playback running, encode or otherwise prepare the stream, and send it to YouTube using the server URL and stream key. YouTube describes encoder streaming as using streaming software or a hardware encoder; it does not treat a NAS as an encoder simply because it contains the media files. See YouTube’s encoder guide.

A NAS is a plausible replacement only if the exact model and installed software support the complete prerecorded-file workflow and can sustain it continuously. Verify model, operating-system and application compatibility before relying on it. Brand, storage capacity and a camera-broadcast feature do not establish that it can loop stored videos.
What YouTube’s Synology example does—and does not—show
Synology’s version 8 Surveillance Station documentation describes broadcasting a selected camera using a YouTube RTMP path and key, with a selected stream profile; its note says the workflow supports H.264 video. That is evidence for that vendor-specific camera workflow, not proof that every NAS can play prerecorded files in a loop. Applicability to other models, newer software versions or stored-video playback is not established by that page. See Synology’s Live Broadcast documentation.

NAS, VPS or dedicated encoder?
Compare the complete operating path: media playback and encoding, upload stability, power and network continuity, failure recovery, monitoring, maintenance and total cost. The available official documentation establishes technical requirements, but does not provide comparable VPS and NAS prices or uptime commitments. There is no evidence-based universal cost or reliability winner.
| Option | When it can fit | What you must verify |
|---|---|---|
| NAS | The exact device and installed software can continuously play the prerecorded files and send a compatible stream. | File-looping and encoder capability, sustained upload, power and network continuity, and recovery after interruptions. |
| VPS | The NAS cannot run the required encoder, the workflow needs a general-purpose operating system, or you want the encoder separate from the home NAS. | Compatible encoding software, YouTube credentials, outbound bandwidth, supervision and recovery. No general cost or uptime advantage is established. |
| Dedicated hardware encoder | You want a physical encoder rather than a NAS or general-purpose computer. | YouTube lists the AJA HELO Plus as a standalone H.264 encoder and says its PlayToStream feature can schedule prerecorded media directly to YouTube Live without a computer. Check the current device requirements and terms. |
How to assess a NAS before depending on it
- Confirm the exact prerecorded playback workflow. Check documentation for your NAS model and software version for continuous playback or looping of stored files and delivery to YouTube. Confirm the feature handles files, not only a camera feed.
- Confirm the output path and credentials. YouTube’s encoder workflow uses its server URL and stream key in the encoder. Use RTMPS where supported; YouTube recommends it to encrypt data to and through Google’s servers. Keep the stream key private.
- Choose settings the device can sustain. Match resolution, frame rate, video and audio encoding to your source and encoder. YouTube Help lists 14 Mbps as its recommended H.264 bitrate for 1080p30, verified on 2026-10-03; this is a recommended stream bitrate, not a guarantee that your connection or NAS can sustain it. Allow upload capacity beyond the nominal stream bitrate and test the actual path. YouTube recommends a speed test but does not prescribe a specific headroom factor. See YouTube’s encoder settings.
- Run a representative preflight. Test the actual NAS, network, media and YouTube destination before relying on the stream. YouTube recommends testing with audio and movement similar to the intended broadcast and monitoring stream health.
- Plan for interruptions. Decide how you will notice and recover from a power, network, playback or encoder failure. A continuous stream requires the NAS, network equipment and internet connection to remain available, plus a practical restart and monitoring plan.
- Check archive expectations. YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. Its guide does not promise that a stream longer than 12 hours will be archived as one complete recording. If a complete archive matters, plan separate recordings or verify the current YouTube behavior rather than assuming a long broadcast becomes one video.
When a VPS is the better fit
Choose a VPS when the NAS cannot run a suitable prerecorded-file encoder, when you need a general-purpose operating system for the media workflow, or when you want the encoder independent of your home storage device. A VPS does not remove the need to configure compatible software, protect the YouTube stream key, provision enough outbound bandwidth and supervise the stream. Its actual cost and reliability depend on the provider and setup; the available evidence does not establish that VPS hosting is inherently cheaper or more reliable than a NAS.

Common failures and what to check
YouTube’s live streaming error guide describes ingestion problems related to unsuitable codec, bitrate, audio or video settings. Use Live Control Room’s errors and stream-health information to narrow down the fault.
- The NAS is online, but no stream appears: Check that the playback or encoder application supports prerecorded files rather than only cameras, and confirm it is sending to the correct YouTube server URL with the current stream key.
- YouTube reports an ingestion or stream-health error: Review codec, bitrate, audio and video settings against YouTube’s guidance; lower demands if the device or upload connection cannot sustain the selected output.
- The stream drops when the home connection falters: Check upload stability and the complete network path, not just the NAS’s local network link. Establish how the encoder will reconnect and how you will detect a failed restart.
- A camera broadcast works, but a video file will not loop: The camera feature does not prove prerecorded playback support. Verify a file-based workflow for the exact model and software, or use a different encoder route.
- A long stream is missing as one complete archive: Do not assume YouTube archives streams over 12 hours as one video; its stated automatic archive guidance applies to streams under 12 hours.
Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is a nonstop prerecorded YouTube stream without maintaining a NAS or VPS encoder, StreamNeo is a managed cloud option: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. Nothing has to stay powered on at home. It streams uploaded videos to YouTube, not a live camera feed; each slot supports the uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, and automatic recovery is included if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly: $9.99 per month. Start the free first day with StreamNeo.
