How to Restart a YouTube Playlist Stream Automatically When an Indian VPS Reboots

Run FFmpeg under a systemd service that is enabled at boot, then configure a restart policy for process failures. These are separate safeguards: boot enablement starts the service after a reboot; Restart=on-failure can relaunch FFmpeg when it exits unsuccessfully. Neither proves YouTube is receiving advancing video, so verify the stream on YouTube and monitor media progress.

What this setup does—and does not do

This guide is for an Ubuntu-style Linux VPS using FFmpeg to send a repeating playlist to a YouTube live stream. It covers restarting the encoder process after a server reboot or qualifying failure. It does not make FFmpeg detect every frozen output, nor does restarting FFmpeg necessarily create, start, or end a YouTube broadcast.

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

YouTube treats a liveStream (the incoming encoder feed) and a liveBroadcast (the event viewers watch) as separate resources. If your workflow requires broadcast creation or lifecycle control, handle that separately; restarting the encoder only re-establishes its output. See the YouTube Live Streaming API documentation.

1. Prepare stable media and playlist paths

Put FFmpeg, the media files, and playlist lists at stable paths that a dedicated service account can read. Avoid relying on a shell’s current directory or files inside a temporary location: a service started at boot may not inherit your interactive shell environment.

For a repeating playlist, FFmpeg can use concat-demuxer file lists for video and audio and loop each input. The exact list format, paths, and FFmpeg options depend on your files and installed FFmpeg version; the implementation example in this FFmpeg playlist streaming guide is a configuration report, not a universal recipe. Test the command manually as the intended service user before putting it in a unit.

  • Use absolute paths for the playlist files, media, FFmpeg executable, and any scripts.
  • Confirm the service user has read access to every input and any required configuration file.
  • Keep the FFmpeg process in the foreground. systemd must supervise the process rather than a shell that exits while a detached encoder continues separately.
  • Check that the playlist actually repeats and that audio and video stay synchronized before relying on unattended operation.

2. Put the FFmpeg command in a systemd unit

Create a service unit, for example /etc/systemd/system/youtube-playlist.service. Adapt the account, paths, and command to your VPS; do not copy another operator’s usernames or directories blindly.

[Unit]
Description=YouTube playlist stream
Wants=network-online.target
After=network-online.target

[Service]
Type=simple
User=stream
WorkingDirectory=/srv/youtube-playlist
ExecStart=/usr/bin/ffmpeg -re -stream_loop -1 -i /srv/youtube-playlist/video.mp4 -c:v copy -c:a copy -f flv "rtmp://YOUR_INGEST_URL/YOUR_STREAM_KEY"
Restart=on-failure
RestartSec=10

[Install]
WantedBy=multi-user.target

This is a unit-structure example, not a guaranteed command for every playlist. Replace the illustrative input and output with your tested playlist command and current YouTube ingest settings. The -stream_loop example loops a single input; a concat-demuxer playlist or separate audio/video lists may need a different command. Copying streams with -c:v copy -c:a copy is only suitable when the input codecs and formats are acceptable for the selected ingest configuration. Confirm option compatibility with the FFmpeg version installed on your VPS.

Restart=on-failure asks systemd to restart the service after an unsuccessful exit or timeout. RestartSec=10 inserts a delay; choose a value appropriate to your setup. Repeated rapid failures can also hit systemd’s start-rate limits, so inspect those limits and the journal rather than assuming retries will continue indefinitely. systemd’s service and unit behavior is documented at systemd.service and systemd.unit.

3. Store the YouTube stream key safely

Get the stream URL and key from YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room. YouTube’s current guidance covers stream setup and supported ingest choices in its live streaming encoder setup help and encoder settings guidance. Follow the URL, protocol, and key shown for your stream; do not assume RTMP, RTMPS, or HLS endpoints are interchangeable.

Treat the key like a password. Do not commit it to a public repository or paste it into a public issue or log. A key embedded in an ExecStart line may be visible to users with sufficient system access and could appear in diagnostic output. Restrict access to the unit and secrets, and use an appropriately permission-restricted environment or configuration file if your setup supports it. Review logs before sharing them to ensure credentials are not exposed.

4. Reload systemd, enable the service, and start it

  1. After saving the unit, reload systemd’s configuration: sudo systemctl daemon-reload.
  2. Enable it for boot and start it now: sudo systemctl enable --now youtube-playlist.service. enable configures activation at boot; --now also starts it immediately. Alternatively, enable and start in separate commands.
  3. Check the service state: sudo systemctl status youtube-playlist.service.
  4. Inspect recent service output: sudo journalctl -u youtube-playlist.service -n 100 --no-pager. To follow new entries, use sudo journalctl -u youtube-playlist.service -f.

These commands use standard systemd service management; consult the installed systemd documentation because behavior and available options can vary by version. The upstream systemctl manual documents enablement and service operations.

5. Test the reboot and confirm the stream advances

Test during a planned maintenance window. A successful service status only tells you about the local process, not whether YouTube is receiving and displaying a moving stream.

  1. Before rebooting, confirm YouTube’s Live Control Room shows incoming media and that the public stream plays as expected.
  2. Reboot the VPS at a time when a brief interruption is acceptable.
  3. After it returns, check systemctl status youtube-playlist.service and the unit journal for startup errors, permission failures, missing files, or rejected output.
  4. Separately check YouTube’s ingest status and watch the public stream long enough to confirm that frames and playlist content advance.

Why systemd alone may not be enough

There are two complementary recovery layers. FFmpeg output recovery can retry some network-output failures while the process remains alive; systemd can start the process at boot and restart it after qualifying exits. One does not replace the other, and neither guarantees that YouTube is showing advancing media.

Layer What it helps with What it does not establish
FFmpeg output recovery Retrying some output failures while FFmpeg remains active. FFmpeg documents options such as attempt_recovery and recovery wait settings in its protocol documentation. Boot startup or proof that YouTube is displaying advancing video.
systemd startup and restart policy Starting the service at boot and restarting it after exits covered by its policy. Detection of every silent freeze in the remote stream.
Progress monitoring Detecting signs that media output has stopped advancing, followed by investigation or an appropriate recovery action. A guarantee that a process-level restart will resolve every ingest or broadcast problem.

An operator’s implementation report describes a case where local process indicators continued advancing while YouTube appeared frozen. The author presents the suspected cause as a working theory, not a proven general explanation. The practical lesson is to check actual media progress and YouTube-side status, not just process uptime.

You can add a watchdog or external check that detects stalled media progress. A frame-counter check and a scheduled preventive restart are tactics described in that implementation, not universal requirements. Choose a check that measures meaningful output progress, alert when it stalls, and verify that any automated recovery does not create repeated failure loops.

Troubleshooting

  • The service does not start after reboot: Check that the unit has an appropriate [Install] relationship, run sudo systemctl is-enabled youtube-playlist.service, then inspect systemctl status and the journal. After changing a unit, run sudo systemctl daemon-reload and enable it again if needed.
  • It starts and exits repeatedly: Read the journal for an invalid FFmpeg option, bad path, unavailable input, permission error, or rejected ingest. Test the exact command as the configured service user. A restart policy cannot fix a command that fails every time.
  • The process is active but YouTube shows no incoming video: Verify the current stream URL, key, and protocol in Live Control Room, then check FFmpeg’s output errors and YouTube’s ingest status. Do not infer stream health from systemctl alone.
  • The public stream appears frozen while FFmpeg remains active: Check media-progress indicators and YouTube playback/ingest separately. Process liveness can diverge from actual advancing output; investigate before choosing a watchdog or restart action.
  • Logs expose sensitive details: Review how the key is supplied and restrict access to the unit, configuration, and journal. Redact credentials before sharing diagnostics; rotate a key if it has been exposed.
  • Restart attempts stop after repeated failures: Inspect systemd’s start-rate limiting and the underlying error. Avoid simply lowering the delay without addressing a persistent failure, which can create a rapid restart loop.
  • FFmpeg restarts but the broadcast is not live: Treat encoder output and broadcast lifecycle as separate concerns. Check the broadcast state and configure any needed YouTube-side or API lifecycle actions independently.

Cost and hosting considerations

This approach requires a VPS that supports the Linux distribution and systemd setup you use, enough storage for the playlist media, and network capacity for the outgoing stream. The available evidence does not establish a best Indian VPS provider, regional performance, or current hosting prices, so compare those against your own location, stream requirements, and provider terms rather than relying on an unverified recommendation.

Also account for the operational work: keeping the server and FFmpeg configuration maintained, protecting the stream key, checking alerts, and troubleshooting outages. A VPS can automate process startup without eliminating stream monitoring.

Or let it run in the cloud

If you do not want to maintain an always-on VPS and restart logic, StreamNeo runs uploaded videos as a looping YouTube stream from the cloud. Upload your recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home; it streams the quality you upload up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, and it can recover automatically if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card required. Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month. Start your free day with StreamNeo.
