Yes—but only a targeted subset, not every volatile organic compound (VOC). A 2025 laboratory study used an engineered protein nanopore to detect individual aldehyde molecules from changes in electrical current. It also detected selected alcohols after an enzyme converted them into aldehydes. The work is a proof of concept, not a consumer device or a clinically validated breath test.
What the nanopore sensor detects
The study, published in Nature Communications on 24 October 2025, demonstrated single-molecule detection of 10 straight-chain, branched-chain and aromatic aldehydes. The researchers also distinguished closely related aldehydes, including isomers, and analyzed mixtures. Aldehydes are one subset of VOCs; the sensor was not shown to identify VOCs universally. The study in Nature Communications notes that aldehydes make up about 5% of human volatiles, while people release more than 4,000 VOCs overall.

How covalent nanopore sensing works
The researchers engineered an α-hemolysin (αHL) protein pore with a cysteine site. Its thiol group reacts reversibly with an aldehyde, forming a hemithioacetal adduct. That interaction changes the ionic current passing through the pore. The current events have characteristics that can help distinguish analytes; how frequently events occur can also provide concentration information.
This is a targeted recognition method: the engineered pore chemistry and the electrical signatures it produces determine what the sensor can detect. It is not simply a general-purpose detector that identifies any molecule passing through the pore.

What the experiments established—and what they did not
Discrimination among aldehydes
The study reports distinguishing 10 aldehydes, including closely related structures, and profiling mixtures. For one event-classification experiment, a random-forest model achieved 98% accuracy on the study’s training and test sets, using manually labeled events as ground truth. That is a result for those data and experimental conditions—not evidence of 98% accuracy in real-world screening, clinical diagnosis or other settings.
Alcohol detection required an extra conversion step
For selected mono alcohols, the team used engineered alcohol oxidase to convert the alcohols into aldehydes, which the nanopore could then sense. This demonstrates a conversion-plus-sensing approach, not direct universal detection of alcohols. Extending the method to other chemical classes would require suitable conversion chemistry or enzymes, with attention to which compounds those reactions accept and how efficiently they work.

Laboratory conditions and engineering challenges
The experiments used single-channel electrical recordings with specialized electrolyte buffer and controlled voltage. Examples in the paper include 2 M KCl and an applied potential of −50 mV; these are experimental conditions, not specifications for a commercial detector. The reaction must also proceed at a rate that produces events and intervals long enough to measure electrically. Designing pores that reliably separate very similar molecular structures remains a challenge.

Breath-based measurement is a potential application, not an established clinical service. Oxford’s overview places the work in the context of disease detection, but the cited analytical demonstrations do not validate a diagnostic test, establish clinical performance or show that the sensor can diagnose a disease from breath. The University of Oxford research overview describes the research context; it should not be read as evidence that a medical test is available.

How it compares with other VOC methods
| Method | What the cited work establishes | Scope and setting |
|---|---|---|
| Engineered protein nanopore covalent sensing | Single-molecule detection of 10 aldehydes; selected mono alcohols detected after enzymatic conversion. Laboratory proof of concept. | Targeted analytes and pore chemistry; specialized electrical recordings. Not shown to replace broad VOC profiling. |
| LC/GC-MS | The nanopore paper describes liquid or gas chromatography–mass spectrometry as the current gold standard for small-molecule detection. | Can provide a near-complete profile of collected VOCs, but typically relies on centralized laboratories, expensive instruments and sophisticated analysis. |
| Nanoporous silica preconcentrator plus PID | A separate study tested selective detection of isopropanol and 1-octene using thermal desorption and a photoionization detector; its abstract notes that the PID alone has little selectivity. | A distinct method, not a protein nanopore sensor. PubMed abstract for the preconcentrator/PID study. |
The nanopore approach aims at detailed recognition within a reduced, selected set of compounds. LC/GC-MS serves a different purpose when broad profiling is needed. The cited studies do not establish that these methods are interchangeable.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Is a portable VOC nanopore sensor available?
The 2025 paper presents low-cost, portable devices as a long-term vision, not as a product announcement. It reports filed patents concerning engineered nanopores and small-molecule covalent sensing, but the cited material does not confirm licensing, a commercial product or a purchasing route. General nanopore sequencing products should not be treated as VOC detectors: Oxford Nanopore’s technology overview explains its general nanopore platform but does not establish VOC capability for its portable sequencing products.

The authors describe a possible future workflow using reagents to convert other compounds into aldehydes before single-molecule detection. That is a proposed direction, not a claim that a complete portable system or compatible consumer reagent kit currently exists.
