A reversible electrochemical mirror (REM) can switch between transparent and reflective states by depositing silver onto an electrode and then dissolving it again. A 2014 laboratory report described a reflective state that lasted up to two hours without external electrical power, but also identified slow switching as an unresolved challenge. The work suggested smart windows as a possible application; it did not establish a commercially available product.
How the reversible electrochemical mirror switches
The device described in the 2014 reports used a thin, silver-containing electrolyte between two transparent electrode panes. Applying a reduction voltage deposits metallic silver on an electrode, forming a reflective layer. Applying an oxidising potential dissolves that coating by ionising the silver, returning the device to a transparent state. The mechanism and construction are described in the Royal Society of Chemistry’s account and the contemporaneous Chemistry World report.

The research team used an ionic liquid. Chemistry World reported that the liquid creates an electric double layer that repels anions from the metal surface, helping deposited silver remain in place when external power is removed. The team also modified the electrode surface with thiol groups to address rupture of the silver coating during deposition. These are details of the reported laboratory approach, not specifications for a current product.
What the reported two-hour memory means
The Royal Society of Chemistry and Chemistry World reported in 2014 that the mirror could retain its reflective state for up to two hours without external electrical power. This is a result reported for the research device, not a guarantee for a product or a measure of how much energy a building might save. The reports do not establish market adoption, commercial availability, or measured energy savings.

Why smart windows were proposed
A window that could switch between clear and reflective states might help control how much light enters a building. The researchers discussed blocking sunlight and redirecting light for illumination or heating as possible uses; reducing cooling costs was a potential benefit, not a demonstrated building-energy result. The idea is broader than simply making glass darker: the reported reflective state could direct incoming light rather than only absorb or block it.
The main challenge: switching speed
The contemporary report said REM switching was slower than that of other electrochromic devices and described faster switching as a remaining research challenge. The sources do not provide a complete, measured product-to-product comparison, so the comparison should not be read as a general ranking of commercial technologies.

What this research does—and does not—establish
The work was reported in 2014 by Eunkyoung Kim’s group at Yonsei University. The original paper is Chihyun Park, Seogjae Seo, Haijin Shin, Bhimrao D. Sarwade, Jongbeom Na and Eunkyoung Kim, “Switchable silver mirrors with long memory effects,” published in Chemical Science (2014), DOI 10.1039/C4SC01912A. The contemporaneous coverage presents a laboratory concept and possible applications, not a named retail mirror or a smart-window product based on this specific method. A current commercialization status is not established by those reports.
