Only if the crystals have first been made responsive to a magnetic field. In a 2019 study, researchers used tailored magnetic additives to make one enantiomer’s crystals magnetic, then collected those crystals with a permanent magnet. The work does not show that a household magnet can identify or sort untreated chiral crystals.
Why an ordinary magnet cannot identify crystal handedness
Chiral crystals can form a conglomerate: a mixture of separate crystals, each made predominantly of one of two mirror-image forms called enantiomers. Even when individual crystals are enantiopure, the two populations may look alike and be difficult to distinguish or sort by hand. Handedness itself does not make an untreated crystal a target for an ordinary magnet.

How the demonstrated magnet-assisted separation works
Ye and coauthors’ 2019 method used magnetic nanoparticles assembled with chiral polymeric inhibitors, which the researchers called “nano-splitters.” With tailored additives and seed crystals, the process caused magnetic material to be incorporated preferentially into one enantiomer’s crystals. The magnetic field was therefore a way to collect a prepared fraction—not a detector of chirality. Nature Communications, 2019

In the reported racemic asparagine monohydrate experiment, colorless R crystals formed first and dark-brown S crystals followed. The dark-brown crystals were magnetic and were screened from the mixture with a permanent magnet. Under the study’s optimized slow-evaporation condition, the authors reported averages across three experiments of 99.2% enantiomeric excess (ee) for the R crystals, 95.0% ee for the S crystals, and 95.1% total yield. These are results for that specific system and procedure, not expected outcomes for an unknown crystal sample.

What the reported magnet details do—and do not—tell you
The paper does not name a consumer magnet model or specify the field strength, grade, or distance needed to screen the finished crystals. Its reported 0.2 T field was used in a different operation: separating nano-splitter assemblies from solution. It should not be treated as a recommendation for a refrigerator magnet or any particular neodymium magnet.
The authors also describe the strategy as demonstrated for conglomerates at that stage, including examples involving threonine, allo-threonine, and p-hydroxyphenylglycine p-toluenesulfonate. This does not establish that the technique will work for every chiral compound. They note that crystals with weaker magnetic loading may be harder to collect, and that entangled, thin needle-like crystals can be difficult to screen.

Other research using magnetic substrates
Separate studies have explored crystallization on magnetic substrates rather than incorporating tailored magnetic additives into crystals. A 2019 Chemical Science paper reports enantioselective crystallization on magnetized substrates and describes compound-dependent outcomes: Enantioseparation by crystallization using magnetic substrates. A 2021 Crystal Growth & Design paper reports a magnetic-substrate approach that, in its tested system, did not require seeding or chemical modification: Simultaneous High-Purity Enantiomeric Resolution of Conglomerates Using Magnetic Substrates. These are crystallization methods, not evidence that placing a loose magnet near arbitrary crystals will separate them.
