Best Time to Post on Instagram: Buffer’s 9.6 Million-Post Analysis (September 2026)

Buffer’s 2026 report, based on Instagram posts published from 2024 through 2025, ranks Thursday at 9 a.m. and Wednesday at noon and 6 p.m. as the leading posting slots. Here’s what the findings measure and how to use them for your account.

Buffer’s analysis puts Thursday at 9 a.m., Wednesday at noon, and Wednesday at 6 p.m. at the top of its Instagram posting-time rankings. Wednesday was the strongest day overall, followed by Thursday and Tuesday; Friday and Saturday were weakest. Treat these local-time benchmarks as starting points, then use your own audience activity and account results to refine your schedule.

What are the best times to post on Instagram?

Buffer’s September 23, 2026 report lists these three leading slots across its analysis:

  1. Thursday at 9 a.m.
  2. Wednesday at noon
  3. Wednesday at 6 p.m.

The analysis covers 9.6 million Instagram posts from more than 200,000 Buffer accounts. Although published in 2026, its underlying Instagram data was collected from January 2024 through December 2025. Buffer says the reported hours are normalized to local time zones, so they are not times to convert from one universal reference zone. Buffer’s Instagram timing analysis is part of a broader report covering 52 million posts across 10 platforms.

How do the leading times vary by day?

Buffer’s listed leading slots and day-level interpretation are:

Day Leading slots reported by Buffer Day-level finding
Wednesday 12 p.m., 6 p.m., 8 a.m. Strongest day overall
Thursday 9 a.m., 8 a.m., 7 a.m. Second strongest day overall; its morning slots stand out against the broader evening pattern
Tuesday 7 p.m., 3 p.m., 5 p.m. Third strongest day overall
Monday 7 p.m., 6 p.m., 8 p.m. Evening slots lead
Sunday 9 p.m., 10 p.m., 8 p.m. Strongest weekend window
Friday 10 p.m., 9 p.m., 6 a.m. Weakest overall, despite these being its leading slots
Saturday 9 p.m., 10 p.m., 8 p.m. Weakest overall, despite these being its leading slots

Across the week, Buffer reports that weekday evenings, generally 6 p.m. to 11 p.m., perform strongly, with Thursday morning as an exception. A day’s leading slots are its strongest relative windows in the analysis; they do not mean that every account should expect strong results then.

What does Buffer’s analysis measure?

Buffer ranks timing by median engagement rate: likes, comments, shares, and saves divided by follower count, multiplied by 100. The median reduces the influence of unusually high or low results and large accounts. This is an engagement measure—not a direct measure of reach, views, follower growth, sales, or conversions—and it does not promise a particular result for an individual account.

The analysis reviewed post formats together. It therefore does not establish separate best times for Reels, carousels, Stories, or static posts. Nor does it independently verify Instagram’s ranking signals or prove that posting at a particular hour changes algorithmic distribution.

How to adapt the benchmark to your account

Use the study’s slots to choose test windows, not as a universal posting rule. Compare them with the activity patterns shown for your own followers in Instagram’s professional dashboard or Insights. The aggregate report cannot tell you when your specific audience is online.

  1. Check your audience activity. Open your professional dashboard or Insights and review follower activity. Use those account-specific patterns alongside Buffer’s local-time windows.
  2. Choose a small number of test windows. Start with plausible options, such as the top three slots or a relevant day’s listed times. Keep each time tied to the local timezone you are using for your audience.
  3. Compare like with like. When assessing your own results, use similar formats and post goals where possible. Buffer’s combined-format analysis cannot tell you whether one format has a different peak.
  4. Track the outcome that matters. Engagement rate, reach, views, follows, and conversions answer different questions. Do not treat a lift in one as proof of a lift in another.
  5. Adjust based on your account’s results. Keep the windows that support your actual goal and audience; revisit them as your audience or publishing mix changes.

Scheduling can help maintain a consistent cadence, but it is optional: the useful point is to publish when your audience and goals make sense, not to use a particular scheduling service. Buffer also relays an attribution to Adam Mosseri suggesting posting 30 to 60 minutes before an audience is likely to come online; because that wording is reported second-hand, it should be treated as an attributed suggestion rather than a directly verified Instagram statement.
