A genuine hardware wallet can be intercepted after it leaves the manufacturer, opened, modified, and then resealed or repackaged before delivery. Packaging and a successful authenticity check reduce risk, but neither proves that nobody handled or altered the complete device. Treat the seller, seals, firmware, secure-element checks, and wallet-creation process as one chain of evidence—and never fund a device that arrives with a recovery phrase, PIN, or filled-in backup card.
What a pre-opening compromise looks like
A supply-chain attack happens between factory dispatch and your first setup. An attacker obtains a genuine unit, opens the enclosure or packaging, adds or changes components, manipulates the onboarding process, and returns the device to distribution. The box may look normal when it reaches you.

In an October 2026 incident response, Ledger described genuine devices that attackers bought through distribution, opened, fitted with hidden components intended to capture the recovery phrase during setup, and returned to circulation. Ledger characterized that event as a localized distribution-channel attack rather than a compromise of its secure element, operating system, or servers. The distinction matters: a manufacturer’s core systems can remain intact while individual units are tampered with outside the factory.
The consequence is severe because the recovery phrase is the root of the wallet. In a March 20, 2018 disclosure, security researcher Saleem Rashid wrote: “As you can tell from the video above, it is trivial to perform a supply chain attack that modifies the generated recovery seed. Since all private keys are derived from the recovery seed, the attacker could steal any funds loaded onto the device.”

That is why “I had not opened the box” is not the same as “the device was never accessed.” The relevant question is whether you can establish a trustworthy chain from seller to packaging to hardware checks to a seed that you generated yourself.
Why an intact-looking seal is not proof
Security seals are useful tamper evidence, but they are not a cryptographic guarantee. Ledger Donjon has documented that classic holographic seals can be cloned and that packages can be opened and closed without visibly damaging the seal. A clean-looking box therefore supports authenticity; it does not establish an untouched supply chain.
Inspect the whole delivery rather than one sticker. Look for inconsistent wrapping, lifted or cloudy adhesive, cuts in cardboard, replacement tape, unusual residue, mismatched printing, missing inserts, or accessories that appear repacked. Photograph the shipping carton, retail box, seals, device, and every included card before setup. Those images preserve a record if official support later needs to investigate.

A damaged or missing seal is a stop condition, not an invitation to “test it anyway.” Put the device aside and contact the manufacturer through a support channel that you initiate yourself. Do not connect it to a wallet, enter sensitive information, or send funds while the package is under review.

How authenticity checks work—and where they stop
Ledger Genuine Check
Ledger’s Genuine Check challenges the device’s secure element. The secure element returns a factory-backed cryptographic signature that the official software can verify. Ledger Donjon describes this attestation chain as a way to reject cloned devices or rogue firmware; a failed check blocks normal interaction.
That check answers a narrower question than many buyers assume. Ledger states that Genuine Check cannot detect every unauthorized physical modification when the original secure element remains intact. A spy component attached elsewhere in the assembly could leave the authentic chip able to produce a valid signature. Ledger also says the check cannot prove the device’s physical supply-chain history.
Use a successful result as necessary evidence that the secure element and software identity are plausible—not as proof that no one opened the unit or that the complete assembly is free of hardware implants.

Trezor’s Safe 5 guidance combines several controls. The package should have intact wrapping and a clean, firmly attached holographic seal. During setup, Trezor Suite installs the latest signed firmware; on every connection, the bootloader checks the firmware signature and warns if it is invalid. Trezor also says the device’s secure element participates in a hardware-level authenticity check.

Trezor says Safe 5 units leave the factory without firmware. That means setup is expected to install signed firmware rather than merely starting a preloaded operating system. This design gives the bootloader an opportunity to reject software that is not signed by the vendor, although signed-firmware verification does not by itself reveal every possible physical modification.
Ledger and Trezor: what each control tells you
| Control | Ledger | Trezor Safe 5 | What it proves—and what it does not |
|---|---|---|---|
| Seller and chain of custody | Ledger recommends its official store or an authorized reseller and warns that marketplace listings, including Amazon, may be unauthorized. | Buy through an official channel or a seller verified against the manufacturer’s authorized-reseller information. | Reduces the number of untrusted hands, but cannot prove that a particular parcel was never intercepted. |
| Packaging | Inspect wrapping and seals; a seal is tamper evidence, not proof of an untouched device. | Wrapping should be intact and the holographic seal clean and firmly attached. | Visible damage is a reason to stop. An apparently perfect seal can still be copied or carefully reapplied. |
| Hardware authenticity | Genuine Check uses a challenge and a factory-backed secure-element signature. | The secure element participates in a hardware-level authenticity check. | Helps identify counterfeit hardware. It does not establish physical supply-chain history or exclude every implant. |
| Firmware verification | Official software performs the vendor’s authenticity workflow; use only the official wallet application. | Trezor Suite installs signed firmware, and the bootloader checks its signature on every connection. | Rejects unsigned or altered software, but firmware checks cannot inspect all hardware changes. |
| Backup creation | A legitimate device does not arrive pre-seeded; create the recovery phrase during your own setup. | Safe 5 backup cards should be blank; setup creates the wallet backup. | A phrase or PIN supplied in the box is a stop-use signal because someone else could already know it. |
How to buy without creating an avoidable supply-chain risk
1. Start with the manufacturer’s sales channel
Use the manufacturer’s official store whenever practical. If you use a retailer or marketplace, verify that the exact seller—not merely the platform—is listed as authorized by the manufacturer. Marketplace fulfillment, a familiar logo, or a low price does not establish authorization. Ledger specifically warns that marketplace listings, including Amazon listings, may be unauthorized.
2. Keep the order and delivery record
Save the order confirmation, seller name, tracking record, and photographs of the parcel. This documentation helps support teams distinguish a distribution problem from a setup error and gives you evidence if the delivered unit differs from the listing.
3. Examine contents before connecting anything
Check wrapping, seals, the device body, cable, instruction material, and backup cards in good light. Do not accept a prewritten recovery phrase, preassigned PIN, or backup card with words already printed or written. Legitimate devices are initialized by you, not by a seller or support agent.

Safe setup sequence before you deposit funds
- Document the package. Photograph the shipping carton, retail packaging, seals, device, and contents.
- Stop for physical anomalies. If wrapping is damaged, a seal is missing or suspicious, or the device appears repackaged, do not proceed. Contact official support through a self-initiated ticket.
- Install only official wallet software. Use the manufacturer’s official download path. Do not follow wallet links supplied by a seller, unsolicited message, search advertisement, or supposed support contact.
- Run the authenticity workflow. Complete Ledger Genuine Check or the applicable Trezor hardware-authenticity process before creating an account or transferring assets.
- Allow firmware verification to finish. For Safe 5, Trezor Suite should install the latest signed firmware and the bootloader should accept its signature. Treat an invalid-signature warning as a stop condition.
- Initialize a new wallet. Generate the wallet on the device. Never use a phrase supplied in the box, on a scratch card, in an email, or in a chat.
- Write the backup yourself. Record the recovery words exactly as displayed by the device. Keep the cards offline and private. Never type the phrase into a computer, phone, website, cloud note, password manager, or support form.
- Verify before funding. Confirm that the device shows the receiving address and that your wallet software displays the same address. Send only a small test amount first if your normal risk controls call for one.
A successful authenticity check is not a reason to skip the other steps. The controls address different failure modes: seller authorization reduces interception opportunities; packaging inspection identifies obvious tampering; attestation helps reject counterfeits and rogue firmware; and self-generated backups prevent an attacker from knowing the wallet’s seed in advance.
What must be blank in a new box
- Recovery phrase: no words should be supplied or preprinted as your wallet backup.
- PIN: no seller-assigned or factory-provided PIN should control initial access.
- Trezor Safe 5 backup cards: Trezor says both cards should be completely blank before setup.
- Wallet state: the first initialization should create a new wallet under your control, not reveal an existing account.
If any of these materials are populated, assume the person who prepared them may know the secret. Do not “change the phrase” on that device and keep using it; create a wallet on a unit whose condition and initialization you can trust, and ask official support how to return or replace the suspect device.
What to do when a check fails or the device behaves strangely
- Disconnect it and do not fund it. Stop entering recovery words, PINs, passwords, or transaction approvals.
- Preserve evidence. Keep the packaging, labels, cards, device, order details, and photographs together. Do not open the hardware yourself.
- Use official support only. Start from the manufacturer’s known website or application, not from a phone number, QR code, or email found inside a suspicious package.
- Assume a known phrase is exposed. If you entered a supplied or previously used recovery phrase, move assets to a newly generated wallet from a trusted device as soon as you can do so safely.
- Report the seller and listing. Provide the seller identity, order number, serial information if requested, photographs, and the exact warning or error message.
Never let someone claiming to be support ask for your recovery phrase. A legitimate support process can investigate a device without receiving that secret.

Does buying from Amazon make a Ledger or Trezor unsafe?
The platform name alone does not answer the question. Risk depends on the specific seller, fulfillment chain, return handling, and whether that seller is authorized by the manufacturer. Ledger explicitly warns that marketplace listings, including Amazon, may be unauthorized. If you cannot verify the seller against the manufacturer’s current authorized-reseller information, the official store is the safer choice.

Even an authorized listing still requires inspection and setup checks. A trusted sales channel lowers interception risk; it does not replace secure-element attestation, signed-firmware checks, blank backup materials, and a seed generated by you.
Can Genuine Check detect a spy chip?
Not reliably. Genuine Check can authenticate the secure element through a factory-backed cryptographic signature and is designed to reject cloned devices or rogue firmware. Ledger states, however, that it cannot detect every unauthorized physical modification when the original secure element remains intact, including the type of spying implant that could observe setup data elsewhere in the assembly. It also cannot prove the physical history of the device. That limitation is why seller selection, packaging inspection, and your own initialization remain essential.
The practical risk model
There are three different questions that buyers often collapse into one:
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches- Is this a genuine product? Secure-element attestation and firmware-signature checks provide evidence.
- Was this exact unit protected through distribution? An official seller, documented delivery, and intact packaging reduce risk, but no software check can reconstruct every physical handoff.
- Does anyone else know my recovery phrase? Only a backup that you generated and recorded privately answers that question. A pre-seeded phrase fails it immediately.
Think of the process as layered control rather than a single “genuine” button. If any layer produces a warning—unauthorized seller, altered packaging, invalid firmware, failed attestation, unexpected wallet state, or prefilled backup material—stop before funds are exposed.
Bottom line for a new hardware-wallet buyer
A hardware wallet can be compromised before you open the box, and a resealed package can look convincing. The strongest practical defense is a trusted chain of custody followed by independent checks: inspect and photograph the delivery, reject any pre-seeded materials, use official software, complete hardware and firmware authentication, and generate the recovery phrase yourself. Ledger and Trezor document meaningful protections, but neither vendor’s checks prove that an attacker never physically handled or modified a genuine device. Do not deposit funds until every layer is consistent and no stop-use signal remains.
