Can a First-Person Game Have Soulslike Combat? Common Design Questions Answered

Yes. A first-person game can deliver Soulslike combat when it preserves deliberate timing, readable enemy intent, costly mistakes and meaningful defensive choices. The camera changes how those ideas must be communicated: because players cannot see their character’s complete animation, enemy wind-ups, weapon position, sound, impact effects and timing windows have to do more of the teaching.

Valor Mortis is the clearest contemporary example described by its director as a first-person game with Soulslike elements, combining melee, parrying, blocking, firearms and transmutations. Its team deliberately aimed to make a first-person game shaped by Soulslike principles rather than simply place a third-person Soulslike behind a different camera.

What makes combat “Soulslike” in the first place?

Soulslike is a design description, not a camera angle or a checklist of interface features. The defining experience is a cycle of observation, commitment, failure and improved understanding. The player studies an opponent, identifies a safe opening, chooses whether to attack or defend, and accepts a real cost if that decision is mistimed.

That pressure usually comes from several systems working together:

  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
  • Readable enemy patterns: attacks have recognizable preparation, active and recovery phases.
  • Committed actions: swings, dodges, parries and special attacks take time or positioning, so button presses are decisions rather than instant escapes.
  • Limited resources: stamina, heat, energy, resolve or another constraint prevents every option from being used continuously.
  • Distinct defensive tools: a parry, block, dodge or hardening ability solves a different problem and carries a different risk.
  • Learning-oriented failure: checkpoints and encounter layouts make repeated attempts productive without removing all route or resource tension.
  • Build and level choices: weapons, upgrades and paths change how a player approaches threats instead of merely increasing damage.

PlayStation’s combat breakdown for Steelrising describes the practical side of this formula: manage timing, study every enemy move, avoid attracting groups and identify weaknesses. Bosses are intended to become understandable over repeated attempts. None of those requirements depends on seeing the player character from behind, so they can be translated into first person.

Why first person changes the design problem

In third person, a player can read an opponent and their own avatar at the same time. The avatar’s shoulders, weapon arc, recovery animation and contact with the ground all communicate whether a move is starting, connecting or leaving the character vulnerable. A first-person camera removes most of that self-animation from view and places the weapon close to the screen, where it can obscure an enemy or make an attack look larger than it is.

That does not make parrying impossible. It changes the source of certainty. A first-person implementation must make the opponent’s intent legible through the enemy’s posture, weapon path, acceleration, audio cue, hit effect and controller response. Radosław Ratusznik, director of Valor Mortis, says its parrying and blocking “work way differently” from systems in which the player sees the whole character and animation. That is an admission of a design opportunity, not a weakness: the camera becomes a foundation for the combat language.

The player needs a trustworthy information chain

For every attack, a player should be able to answer three questions without guessing: “Is the enemy committing now?”, “When is the contact moment?” and “What happened when I responded?” The answers can come from different channels, but they must agree. If an enemy raises a weapon slowly while a sharp audio cue marks the final beat, the impact effect and controller vibration should arrive at the same moment as the damage window.

Visual effects should clarify timing rather than conceal it. A bright flash on every hit can make weak and heavy attacks indistinguishable, while excessive screen shake can hide the next attack. First-person combat benefits from restrained reticles, readable silhouettes and enough camera distance that a large enemy’s hands do not fill the entire view during its wind-up.

How do you make parrying and blocking work in first person?

Show the enemy’s commitment, not the player’s animation

Use a consistent preparation language. A shoulder rotation, planted foot, weapon lift or brief pause can signal that an attack has moved from threat to commitment. The cue should be visible from normal combat distance and remain identifiable when another enemy is nearby. Distinct attack families—horizontal sweep, thrust, overhead strike and grab—should have different silhouettes or sounds.

Separate the timing window from the contact effect

A parry window should open before the weapon visibly reaches the camera, otherwise the player is reacting to damage rather than intent. The successful response needs an immediate, unmistakable result: a sharp sound, a controlled spark, a brief enemy stagger or a reticle change. A failed parry should also communicate why it failed, such as a late block, an out-of-range attempt or an attack that cannot be parried.

Give blocking a stable fallback role

Blocking can absorb a predictable hit, preserve positioning or protect against a group attack, while parrying can create a larger reward at a narrower timing window. If both actions are equally safe and equally rewarding, players have little reason to learn the difference. If only parrying is viable, the combat becomes a reflex examination and discourages players who prefer measured defense.

Account for attacks outside the crosshair

Third-person players can see an enemy entering from the side of the screen while watching their own character. First-person players are more vulnerable to off-screen attacks, especially in tight rooms. Use directional audio, shadows, peripheral animation and controlled enemy approach angles. Avoid spawning a second attacker directly behind the camera unless the game provides a deliberate warning and a practical response.

Does a first-person Soulslike need stamina?

No. It needs a system that limits continuous safety and forces choices. Stamina is one solution, but the same decision pressure can come from heat, energy, resolve, ammunition, cooldowns or recovery commitments.

Implementation Resource pattern Design lesson
Steelrising Heat rises during aggressive action. Cooling can be triggered immediately, but mistiming the cooling action can briefly incapacitate the player. A resource can make aggression powerful while attaching a timing risk to recovery.
Atomic Heart Charged melee attacks consume energy; save-room structure supports a recognizable Soulslike rhythm in a first-person shooter. Energy can govern high-impact attacks even when ordinary swings remain available.
Mortal Shell Resolve and stamina support defensive tools and limited invulnerability frames. Powerful defense feels meaningful when it is constrained rather than free.
Valor Mortis The reported design combines firearms, melee, parrying, blocking and transmutations. Several resource and attack channels can coexist if each has a clear tactical cost.

The important question is not whether the interface displays a green bar. Ask what the player must give up to attack, defend, reposition or use a special ability. A resource that regenerates instantly, has no meaningful failure state or never competes with another action is decoration rather than decision pressure.

Can guns coexist with Soulslike melee?

Yes, provided ranged attacks do not erase the need to read enemies, control space and commit to a choice. A firearm can interrupt a charging foe, punish a distant weakness or create room to heal, while melee remains the safer way to exploit a stagger or conserve ammunition. If every encounter can be solved by backing away and firing, the deliberate close-range loop disappears.

Valor Mortis is described as balancing players who come from first-person shooters with players who expect Soulslike combat. Its reported combination of firearms, melee, parrying, dual-wielding and spell-like transmutations works only if those tools have non-overlapping jobs. Ranged attacks might demand ammunition, a charge-up, exposure while aiming or a loss of parry readiness. Melee might offer better damage or resource recovery but require proximity and timing.

Atomic Heart offers another first-person example in which the developers said they put melee at the forefront to recreate the feel of the Soulslike genre. The lesson is priority: adding a sword to a shooter is not enough; melee must influence encounter pacing, upgrade choices and the player’s safest response.

How should levels and encounters be built for first-person melee?

Control sightlines and occlusion

First-person fights are unusually sensitive to corners, door frames and enemy bodies blocking one another. Test whether the player can see the attacking limb, not merely the enemy’s head. Keep critical wind-ups out of extreme camera proximity, and provide enough space for the player to circle without losing the opponent behind a wall or pillar.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Manage approach angles and group attention

Groups should create a positioning problem rather than an invisible-damage problem. Give the player a way to separate enemies, retreat through a doorway or identify which foe has noticed them. Steelrising uses narrow streets, verticality and alternate routes so players can surprise enemies, bypass fights or choose a different angle of attack. Those options make level geometry part of the combat system.

Use verticality as a mechanical choice

Jumping, climbing or dropping can change who sees the player first, but verticality should remain readable from the camera. A high ledge is useful when the player can judge the landing, enemy reach and escape route. It is frustrating when a small height difference silently changes hit detection or prevents a defensive move.

Let exploration and bosses have different shapes

The designers of Mortal Shell describe a non-linear world intended to make players feel lost, uneasy and curious, with multiple routes and discoveries. They made boss areas more linear and handcrafted so attention could stay on combat. That contrast is valuable: exploration can test navigation and resource conservation, while a boss arena can provide clean sightlines and a focused pattern-learning exercise.

Jeff Magers, lead level designer on Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order, summarizes the relationship by saying that level design is based on the player’s mechanics and acts as a foil to them. In practice, every new ability should eventually meet a space that asks the player to use it in a different way.

How should checkpoints, healing and progression support learning?

A checkpoint is a pacing instrument. Place it close enough to a difficult encounter that players can test a new idea repeatedly, but not so close that route planning, healing and resource conservation become irrelevant. A long runback can turn a failed experiment into a chore; a checkpoint after every door can remove all tension from the approach.

Atomic Heart’s developers identify save rooms as part of their attempt to recreate Soulslike rhythm in a modern first-person shooter. The principle is broader than a particular save-room interface: players should know when progress is secure and what resources will be restored, retained or reset.

  • Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft

Mortal Shell’s team intentionally made parrying the primary way to heal and removed shields to keep combat aggressive. That choice ties recovery to skill and proximity rather than allowing unlimited safety behind a defensive object. Other games can choose a different healing rule, but the connection between risk and recovery should be explicit.

Progression should expand decisions

Upgrades are most useful when they open a new answer to a problem: a faster recovery after a missed parry, a ranged tool that marks a weak point, a weapon that rewards charged attacks or a transmutation that changes crowd control. Flat damage increases have a place, but a progression tree made only of larger numbers does not deepen the combat language.

A practical design process for first-person Soulslike combat

  1. Define the non-negotiable loop. Write down the intended sequence—observe, position, commit, defend, recover—and identify the mistake the player is supposed to learn from.
  2. Prototype one enemy and one weapon. Before building a large arsenal, test whether a single attack can be recognized, parried, blocked and dodged from the normal first-person camera.
  3. Author layered tells. Give every attack a visual preparation, a sound cue and a contact response. Remove any cue that arrives after the decision window.
  4. Assign defensive jobs. Decide what parry, block, dodge, hardening and ranged interruption each solve. Add a cost, cooldown or positional requirement where necessary.
  5. Choose the limiting resource. Model how attacks, defense and special abilities compete. Test empty, half-full and full-resource states so the system does not collapse into one dominant option.
  6. Build a small encounter ladder. Start with one enemy, then add a second approach angle, a ranged threat, a confined space and a group that can be separated. Each step should test a known mechanic.
  7. Place an iteration-friendly checkpoint. Measure the time from failure to the next meaningful attempt. Preserve enough route and resource decisions to keep success earned.
  8. Stress-test visibility. Run fights near corners, doorways, slopes and large enemies. Check for off-screen hits, weapon occlusion and situations in which the crosshair points at one threat while another attacks unseen.
  9. Balance progression around choices. Ensure upgrades create different approaches rather than making one defense or weapon universally correct.

How to compare two first-person Soulslike implementations

Use the following review axes instead of asking whether a game has a stamina bar or a dodge roll. They reveal whether the system preserves deliberate decision-making.

Axis Questions to ask Warning sign
Readability Can players identify attack intent and timing using first-person cues? Damage arrives before the player can distinguish a wind-up.
Commitment Do attacks and defenses have recovery, range or positioning risks? The player can cancel every mistake instantly.
Resource economy Does heat, stamina, energy or resolve constrain choices without feeling arbitrary? The resource is either irrelevant or empties before meaningful decisions occur.
Defensive roles Do parry, block, dodge, harden and ranged tools solve different problems? One option is always safer and more rewarding.
Encounter geometry Are sightlines, enemy approach angles, verticality and occlusion controlled? Unseen attackers decide outcomes more often than player choices.
Progression Do upgrades expand playstyles? Only damage numbers change.
Checkpoint rhythm Does failure lead quickly to another informed attempt while retaining route tension? Runbacks discourage experimentation, or checkpoints erase all cost.
Fantasy fit Does first person add a distinct identity? The camera merely imitates a third-person game and hides necessary information.

What existing examples demonstrate

Valor Mortis: adapting principles instead of copying a template

In a ComicBook.com interview dated June 12, 2026, director Radosław Ratusznik described the goal as “a first-person game with Souls-like elements, not a Souls-like game in first-person.” The reported feature set—melee, parrying, blocking, firearms, dual-wielding and transmutations—shows how a team can preserve deliberate combat while keeping a separate first-person identity. The project is still subject to change as development, launch and updates continue.

Steelrising: timing, heat and route choice

PlayStation.Blog’s combat breakdown, published approximately in 2022, emphasizes studying enemy moves, managing timing, finding weaknesses and using vertical or alternate routes. Its heat-and-cooling loop demonstrates how a resource can reward aggression while making recovery itself a risk.

Mortal Shell: aggressive defense and world contrast

An Unreal Engine interview from approximately 2020 explains the decision to make parrying the primary healing route, limit invulnerability through resolve and stamina, remove shields and keep combat aggressive. The same discussion describes a non-linear world for discovery and more controlled boss spaces for concentrated combat learning.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Atomic Heart: melee priority inside a shooter

A 2023 Game World Observer interview says the developers put melee at the forefront to recreate Soulslike feel, while charged melee attacks consume energy and save rooms reinforce the rhythm. This illustrates that a first-person shooter can borrow the genre’s pacing without abandoning firearms.

Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order: mechanics should shape spaces

In a 2019 Shacknews interview, lead level designer Jeff Magers explained that level design is based on the player’s mechanics and acts as their foil. The save structure is intended to encourage learning and mastery rather than allowing players to muddle through every encounter without understanding their abilities.

Common failure modes and fixes

“I was hit before I could react.”

Check whether the tell is visible at the actual combat distance, whether sound is masked by other effects and whether the active damage frame starts before the cue finishes. Move the decision cue earlier or reduce attack speed before widening the parry window indiscriminately.

“Parrying is the only sensible defense.”

Increase the value of blocking, dodging or repositioning in situations where a parry is unsafe. Give each defense a matchup: block against predictable chip damage, dodge against grabs or wide sweeps, parry against a committed single strike and ranged tools against a distant weakness.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

“The stamina or energy bar feels arbitrary.”

Show the consequence of spending it and the opportunity created by conserving it. If a charged attack consumes energy, make the resulting damage, stagger or space control clearly different from an ordinary swing. Tune regeneration around the length of a normal exchange, not an abstract target percentage.

“Groups feel unfair in first person.”

Reduce simultaneous attack angles, add audio and peripheral warnings, and provide terrain that lets players split the group. Avoid stacking enemies in a space where bodies and weapons hide one another’s tells.

“Checkpoints make the game either tedious or trivial.”

Measure the full loop from death to the next serious decision. Shorten empty travel, retain meaningful resource choices and place the checkpoint before the learning target rather than after it.

The bottom line for players and designers

A first-person camera does not disqualify a game from being Soulslike. It raises the standard for communication. The successful version is not defined by copying a third-person interface; it is defined by readable intent, committed actions, constrained resources, differentiated defenses, deliberate encounter geometry and checkpoints that turn failure into knowledge. When those systems are designed around the camera, first person can add its own strengths—immediacy, vulnerability and a direct sense of distance—while retaining the genre’s essential decision pressure.
